Well if you go and look at the freenetworks.net you'll see the projects that ARE ACTUAL NETWORKS are not trying to provide "free" internet. Seattlewireless.net is a network SEPARATE FROM THE INTERNET. Those cases are the real societal gems.
In a time where many businesses are going under and showing little signs of life, Apple is opening up retail stores and inproving their desktops very rapidly. Leavie it to the slashdot crowd to still find something to say Apple is doing wrong. Apple is a niche and they will stay that way for quite a while. Projects like Darwin and DSS will help Apple pull it out of it's hole.
I remember 15 years ago as a kid I went to buy my first set of skis with my parents. At the shop there was a big carpeted slope that, with the flip of a switch, started to move like a giant belt sander. I can't remember wher it was but I just asked my parents and they thought it was at a some ski expo. Anyone else remember something like this?
Microsoft does not own a nice chunk of Apple. They bought $150k worth of non-voting stock a few years back. $150k, contrary to what many people think, is just a drop in the bucket to Apple. Apple is actually a multi-billion dollar company.
MS will continue to make a Office suite for MacOS because if they don't it will be another prime example of how, as a monopoly, they can control the fate of other companies.
They are not going to make a Office suite for Linux because they don't right now and they don't feel they have too. If Linux only has 0.24% of the market its easy to economicaly justify that. Plus there are all the other reasons they will not....

Well, they set up a captive portal (NoCat.net) and tell every one that this is not a secure network and they shouldn't do anything stupid. Done.
