  1. Wait... you'd rather NOT go to Italy? on ICFP Programming Contest 2002 · · Score: 3, Interesting

The prize this year is $1000 and a trip to the conference, which is acutally in the US this year, as compared to Italy last year."

I like the U.S. and all... but come on! I live here! How many programmers do you think have never even left the country? Or continent? Italy and other foreign countries are adventures of culture and experience just waiting to happen!

Is this like the geek-urge to stay indoors... except on a country-sized scale!?

  2. Re:what linux gaming needs... on Michael Simms of LGP and TuxGames · · Score: 1

is a killer app, a game which isn't available on another platform, which takes advantage of the special properties which open source and linux operating systems can offer... like really long uptimes... like keeping the game on in the background all the time in a minimal mode, so that it acts likes a server using p2p for playing (like doom3) when you're not playing it.

    a massively multiplayer elite-a-like?

The open source game Vega Strike is a gorgeous-looking cross-platform game (that runs under Windows AND Linux... even OSX), that is currently a Privateer/Elite style game. There is a group working on turning the excellent single player experience into a massively multiplayer one... Vega Strike is exactly what you're looking for!

Please be sure to threaten those who challenge your license fees with lawsuits and draconian collections efforts. We officially support any action you take to drive home the 'mp3 costs money' message. Thanks again, and best of luck!

Certainly, there is part of me that wants Ogg to get a lift from this bad business... so I can certainly seeing him wanting them to press with litigation... On the other tentacle, is it wrong to wish such evil behaviour (on the part of the Thompson Multimedia) upon innocent and unsuspecting people?

Or maybe his overall message was: 'You guys just made a real dumbass business move, and now we're gonna getcha!!'

Have you people no mercy, linking directly to the movie? As morning rolls 'round, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory servers are going to get a royal beating.

  6. Re:tabbed browsing. on KDE 3.1 Beta Released · · Score: 1

how could you not like it? Instead of having to open 5 different windows of Mozilla I have just one and easy access to each (I use E and don't have the option of a taskbar or icons).

If you're using Enlightenment, then you can use the Icon Box as a taskbar analogue... it can store your 'iconified' (minimized) windows, even allowing you to have a 'snapshot' picture to represent it! I stretch my iconbox along the bottom of my screen, so It's just like a taskbar.

I also, however, find tabbed browsing to be a gift from the gods. Even in E. No more giant jumbles of open browser windows! The jumble is now quite moderate, and it's all in one easy-to-access window.

  7. Star Trek Generations cut footage on Crusher Crushed from Nemesis · · Score: 1

DVD extras make me feel a lot safer about this, meaning that I'll be able to see the extra scenes one day. Unless Paramount releases a bare-bones DVD release like they have most of the other Trek movies. Hopefully by the time Nemesis is released on DVD, they wil have finished the other 9 Trek movies in special edition format, and be able to release a quality version of Nemesis right away!

In the meantime, why not enjoy some cut footage from Trek movies-past? Ceti Alpha has some loq-quality-video scenes from Star Trek Generations that didn't make the final cut. Definately worth a look (even though there was no Wesley Crusher/Wil Wheaton in Generations). Happy Trekking!

  8. Neural Nanonics on Cortical Cybernetic Implants · · Score: 1

This story suddenly reminded me of Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy. In that, many people (especially starship crews) have 'neural nanonics' implanted. They act as kind of an onboard computer system for an individual, allowing them control over their nervous system, letting them run programs to enhance their vision and affect their state of mind (like drug-programs), and even leave 'to do' notes to themselves (how many times have you made a mental note about something, but forgot about it?). At first, I thought 'wow... that's really cyberpunk. Yawn'. But after reading through the whole trilogy, I was amazed at how well Hamilton integrated this potentially overused technology into the story, making it quite seamless and natural.

Plus, I think it would be totally awesome to be able to choose what kind of window manager I'd want overlayed on my eye's input.

Here is some more information on technology in the Night's Dawn trilogy, and a good description of nanonics are near the top.

  9. Re:This sounds good, but... on India Plans Its Own Moon Shot · · Score: 1

You are wrong, the U.S.A. does not actually have any claim of sovereignty on the Moon. The U.S. has signed the Outer Space Treaty (1967) agreeing that no country can specifically own land on extra-terrestrial bodies (and banning nuclear weapons in orbit or on the Moon).

The U.S.S.R and the U.S. both agreed to that in order to prevent the Cold War and other national conflicts from spilling over into the virgin lands of outer space. A shining pinacle of Cold War diplomacy.

"Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means."

It's still a big issue, and some people have a problem with it [Slashdot.org], specifically the sovereignty clause. Anyways, I'm sorry but I must disagree with you.
