I agree 100%. Just look at the curriculum at any Liberal Arts school. Out of 128 Credits for my BS in CS, roughly half are in non-CS sujects like history, philosophy, natural science, public speaking, heck, even a music course.
In terms of the effort you're willing to bring to this "degree" you are looking for, go for a certification. If you are looking for a Bachelors degree from a College or University, you have to realize that I will take time.
You are indeed insulting anybody with a college degree. College is not just passing your CS courses that you know already anyway. It's the academic atmosphere, it a certain commitment in time, money, effort, and discipline.
On the other hand, don't go for a CS degree then. Do business, or don't you think an MBA would help spice up your CV?
How much further do you think you can advance with solely your mad programming skills? After Chief Rocket Scientists, there is only so much you can advance as a purely technical consultant.
If your claim of 5 years of 50% increases is anywhere near truth, then you should not have a problem commiting 3-4 years for Bachelors degree. You are definitely still young enough.
For further advancement in your fast-paced carreer, consider acquiring some management and people skills, or how about some business sense.
You do realize they make you right essays, attent and participate in the class room, do research and homework in college, right?
I'm gonna run into the same situation in a few month. However, we're not building the house ourselves, but rather purchased a new construction to be completed in spring - so while this will be "our house", we don't really own it until settlement, after construction is completed. I've already talked to people that run the alarm package and offer the "onQ" home wiring solution, but they are such morons ("We'll give you a state-of-the-art 10-baseT hub") that I wouldn't trust them to run a phone line. Besides, they are way too expensive.
So my question is, at which point can I legally and pratically get into the house and run my own cables? And who do I have to tell? Is it enough to bribe the electrician with a case of beer? Or do I have to get this whole thing approved by the builder? Does the builder have to let me into the house at all, or can they insist that I use their security contractor for the wiring?
This will all be low-voltage wiring, so I don't think I have to be a certified electrician, right? But I'd like to get CAT5e, coax, audio, and possibly fiber (what kind?) into most of the rooms, concentrated in the basement. Also, I'd like to have this connected neatly in the rooms, via phone jack type of in-the-wall boxes. But then I have to get the people putting the dry walls in to make the appropriate cut-outs, complicating things some more.
OK, just one more: How about any type of outside wiring, e.g. inductive loop under driveway; low-vol line to mailbox; cable, audio & power to the back yard?
Ordered it on Tuesday night, came Friday via UPS ground. Site's painfully slow, but processed the order fine anyway. So no complains here.
linux-hacker.net has info on hacking this "MSN Companion" as well as other I-Appliances like epods and audrey. Lots of people have done some very nice work on these already. Thanks!
From the actual list of stations, this looks very much like the selection of station I receive via Digital Cable, though they offer more stations already. While it's not your HOT 96FM or K-rock or q104 morning show, you will be able to get high quality, digital music, some even without commercials. Think about that for a second. If you drive a lot, you will appreciate this. There's nothing like sitting in traffic and all the stations have either talk (ever realize that every radio station now needs at least 3 people for there morning shows? I actually enjoy listing to music sometime) or commercials. In addition, once this is fully roled out, you will be able to receive the same station for your entire trip.
Efforts to get the Radio Data Service (RDS) going over here in the U.S. have been very pitiful. In Europe, I can drive for hundreds of kilometers and receive the same station the entire way. RDS, besides sending out the station name and other text data, also sends out alternative frequencies for the same station - so as I'm driving from Hamburg to Berlin, the RDS capable radio will switch from Hamburg's frequency for N-Joy Radio to the frequency this station uses in Berlin... or any in between.
I don't quite see myself buying a new car stereo for this satellite radio, but I could see pay $10/mo if my next car had a compatible radio already. Especially since my dealer wanted $500 for the CD changer... I'll think I go for XM radio.
I think what this needs to really catch on is additional services - we're throwing all this digital equipment together, along with the digital pipe for delivery, you'd think there's more than music to get out of this.
I've used my epods as a console for a SUN Enterprise 6500 server with 10 CPU, 10 GB mem. Very nice, but I'd recommend adding a USB keyboard - handwriting recognition and vi editor don't mix...
wait 1.2 wait JSK 2 1.2.2_03 no 1.2.2_04a with EJB 2.2 JSP 1.1&2 JDBC 1.0-2.5 you get my point
But any good java docs out there? how about instead of spending $1000's on book, just give them a $500 internet appliance with google? google know everything.
oh you are the moron that keeps the line busy ...

TiVo Upgrade Isn't
·
· Score: 1
Most of the times when my TiVo dials up I hit (NOT) a busy signal . I told TiVo (NOT) about this, but they said (NOT) that for the number of paying subscribers in my area, they could not increase their capacity.
LISTEN. You obviously did not buy the cheapest TiVo - $400? I got mine for $200. So you either have a larger capacity or Direct TV included and probably - from all your manual recordings - use it quite extensively.
For your needs, why didn't you get a PC, with a big HD, video capture card, software, etc? Because it's way more expensive. Ah, I understand. So why is the TiVo only $200-$600? Because you get an appliance for a 'no pain' initial purchase price, and pay for the service PLUS make up some of the real development & parts+labor that it really took to build this.
TiVo did not 'force' subscription so far. Neither did they interfere with any of the hacking - bigger HDs, etc - so far. Read the TiVo Hacking forums, you'll get the hint that a lot of people are very thankful to the TiVo people for providing such a nice device and actually are against any hacks that would cheat TiVo out of their service.
Do you have a cell phone? I just got a new one, Nokia 8260 for $99... PLUS a service contract. This phone is way more than $99 when you get it without the service. I could still use it as a clock/calendar/phone book/games without the service.
Morons like you will convince nice companies like the folks at TiVo to make sign-up mandatory as soon as you buy this box - and take strong counter measures against any 'nice' hacking they tolerate so freely now.
If you need a court of law to laugh at you and explain to you that you have no grounds for your complaining, why don't you go and sue them?
OK i could see this setup: my DSL modem into my SMC barricade into this cube, then a wireless NIC to my epods. I could leave my PC off - this device only using ~400ma (x120V = 48 watts vs my 200-300W PC) would make it ideal.
Although I agree it's not much more of a device than an IPaq. and it is $500 as well. My 486 was free, runs standard x86 RH7.1, and has a parallel port, way more disk space, etc. Not as pretty, but the price was right.
WE ARE THE BORG. We had the cube first. We will assimlate your linux. Resistance is futile. We eat little pieces of sh*t like Steve Jobs for breakfast. Wait no - we do not eat little piece of sh*t for breakfast. All your cube are belong to us.
Found this car a while ago on the web and was ready to sell my 2.8L V6 on the spot, but no sorry:

Dear [my name deleted]:
Thank you for contacting Audi of America.
We certainly appreciate your interest in the Audi A2.
Despite rave reviews, we have no plans at this time to bring the A2 to North
America. Since Audi vehicles are designed to satisfy the wants and needs of
our public, we will refer to your interest in this model when future product
recommendations are discussed.
If we can help in any other way, please write again.
Oh yeah sorry, I failed to see this. This does indeed look very similar. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? You're statements are totally irrelevant.
Shades of truth? Ambiguous and misleading? As an adult, you will go to jail for illegal hacking. No mature philosopher needed here.
the policy, the procedure is above all. Did I say that? Is telling the offender the above statement in any way related to your corncern about absolut and unquestionable policies?
why a 13-year-old
1. knows how to do
and
2. is successful
at suicide?
With so many attempted suicides that fail because either the about-to-go-bye-bye reconsiders or messes up (rope too long, etc.), what state of mind do you have to be in to so quickly plan, prepare, and execute a "successful" hanging?
Now wait a second here: What is so cruel and unusual about telling this kid the truth? If you are an adult, you will go to jail if caught for illegal hacking. That's not necessarily a gruesome threat, but a very valid wake up call. If the system he hacked had been a military site, he would have gotten into a lot of trouble even as a minor.
So telling him that, as an adult, he could go to jail, is not only correct but - if phrased correctly - a very important reality check that this playful hacking is a serious issue.
So OK I'm not from around here, oh great one ... what does pedantic mean? jk
