  1. Wargames on 2004 Board Games Gift Guide · · Score: 1

Memoir '44 is great, but if the putdown of real wargames made you wonder whatever happened to them, check out: http://www.consimworld.com/

They live! (and die of course)

  2. It won't work long on Stopping SpamBots With Apache · · Score: 3, Insightful

Checking the user agent won't work for long - how hard will it be for the spammers to change the user agent to "Mozilla..."

Using some client side Javascript would be harder for them to deal with (although if your browser can view it they will be able to also).

I guess graphics would be next...

  3. Guess they weren't ready for Slashdot on ReplayTV 4000 Series Shares TV Over Net · · Score: 1

Great product, too bad their (pre)order page is down. Shopping on the web is getting worse and worse.

  4. Re:Deregulation hasn't helped so far... on Letting The Market Choose Decent Broadband · · Score: 2, Insightful
It just shows that anything that perturbs the free market is going to cause problems. Having a telco Monopoly thats sucking even just a fixed 20 bucks from every phone pretty much gives them as much money as they need to have free reign elsewhere. Who does this remind you of?

  5. This sucks! on Rhythms Flatlines · · Score: 1

All these providers shutting down, and I can't get any high speed connection outside of StarBand. Why is this happening? Too much regulation or just stupid business decisions?

  6. Re:Journalistic integrity pays on LinuxToday Astroturfing Explained · · Score: 2, Insightful

Seems like there could hardly be a better example of journalistic integrity then news and editorial columns on the opposite side of an issue - unless of course it's an article or editorial that trashes an advertiser. And then of course you have Consumer Reports, no advertising at all. Seems like it would be hard to beat that level of integrity. With the paucity of advertising revenue you would think there might be a market on the web for a "high standards" user supported ($$$) news site - maybe even for Linux.

    Slashdot subscriptions anyone?

Just kidding about high standards though...

  7. Goto will take over on Search Engine Payola · · Score: 1
I actually think goto.com is the purest expression of what all the search engines will have to become eventually. And the interesting thing is, they are making money now! When Google IPO's and starts to have to hit quarterly profit numbers we're going to see it change (more ads, more find more books on 'stupid search term'). And goto does work well for some things - I was looking for a hosting service and I found a pretty good list to check out searching at goto - I think it works well for focused commerce type searches. They've got therd first and they'll be hard to displace, mark my words, 5 years from now goto will be the most popular search engine.

  8. Gnutella works well enough for me on P2P vs. RIAA: RIAA Wins · · Score: 2

I don't know about anybody else, but Gnutella seems to be working better all the time. I've had no problem finding even obscure stuff I've been looking for. And no matter what the RIAA sez, shutting down Gnutella would require some pretty draconian action.
