That's what I learned in high school physics back in '83 anyway.
The oversimplified version
Send a beta partical hurdling through a cell and
every once in a while it will smack the DNA and
break it in half. Every once in a while that
DNA will recombine into a single strand that's
different than it was before. A very small number
of those will be viable (a mutation).
"The last thing I want to do is deal
with a bunch of people who want something."
I've always wondered if it was better to spend your money on more evil attorneys, when you find yourself a defendant or spend it on hit men for the plaintiff and his evil attorneys.
"The last thing I want to do is deal with a bunch of people who want something."
/. can't/doesn't do real voiting. I don't know of any one who does. I could see doing it with clientside certificates, but I don't think most lusers could handle that on their end if they shared a Workstation.
I stuff the ballot box every once in a while of the local TV stations, just because they are such idiots.
"The last thing I want to do is deal with a bunch of people who want something."
A friend of my just had this done to both eyes and is very happy with the results.
I mentioned this to my wife and she told me the sad tail of her hairdressers husband (..wifes hairdressers husband... Is there any chance it's either true or accurate?)
It seems the assistant who setup/calibrated the machine got one of the factor wrong and what was suppose to be a -2.5 became 2.5. So instead of making his vision better it made it worse, much worse.
After three month and two more sugeries to try to correct the damage he is still legally blind and out of work.
And now for the morle of the story: Don't do both eyes at once.
"The last thing I want to do is deal with a bunch of people who want something."
I work for a college that is "owned" by the other evil empire, Pepsi. Thanks to a donated electronic message board (I refer to it as the "Big Ugly Sign").
Now just because they have all the vending rights does not mean one can't buy a Coke. You just have to know where to look.
One weekend I installed a refrigerator in my office and now keep it well stocked with whatever is in demand. I even beat Pepsi's price:-)
"The last thing I want to do is deal with a bunch of people who want something."
I must admit I am suprised (and happy) to see the stereo-type of patent attorneys shattered. Who would have thought they would both see and admit the system is badly broken.
The question that remains is "can they change it with the large financial incentives for not doing so?" What a racket they have;
"...the courts have held that no one but a patent attorney can really know what the scope of coverage of a patent claim is."
"...not applicable to individuals who cannot afford to keep a small army of patent attorneys on retainer."
"The enforcement of a patent... costs a small fortune to defend"
"it costs... small fortune to assert it as well."
"apply for patents in self-defense."
And of course we all know who it is getting these small fortunes we must pay in self-defense.
So why have several patent attorneys let the cat out of the bag (the cat being that the patent system is broken and the bag being the cocoon of ignorance in which the public lives)?
Maybe, just maybe, it because they are patent geeks (they read/. don't they). As geeks they see a system that is broken and want to fix it. That's what geeks do.
I think maybe this system was just a bad prototype and it's time to throw it away and use what we have learned (from our mistakes) and build a new system.
If we really need on at all. After all the current system benefits no one but the patent attorneys.
"The last thing I want to do is deal with a bunch of people who want something."
If Red Hat TM wants to start enforcing a trade mark they haven't been for years that's fine. It's their right and probably a wise move. However the way they have chosen to do it (if this story is true) sucks.
Nobody wants to be threatened with legal action (well at least not normal people). If they want to start enforcing their trade mark then please;
Make a public statement (if they have to wait until the end of the "quiet period", fine) that they are going to start doing so.
Tell everyone if/how they can use your trademark.
Unofficial Red Hat TM
Based on Red Hat TM

Just like you get from the companies who's name is one of the words the Knights of Linux TM cannot say.
Give everyone a few days to comply, then fire off the "lawyer letters".
Now:
To you lusers who sell "free" software for unreasonable prices. You know who you are, tring to pass it off as the official version, trying to live near the event horizon of fraudulent behavior, praying on the unknowing, the naive.
You suck eat a bag of shit.
It's people like you who keep the world from being a nice place. Always looking for a sucker to dupe. Go charge too much for something else.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say "abusing THEIR property". Are you saying using their network/systems for other than company business? If so I'm not sure if that's abuse or misuse. If not... what are you talking about?
If they want to fire people for using company resources for other than company business fine. I think they should fire people who do a lousy job first and then deal with what's left, but if they what to start with abusers/misusers then they should be as willing to fire the old lady who uses their equipment to correspond with her grand child at MU.
If not see what you boss thinks of this (assuming he is not an idiot).
Tell them you bussy and don't have time for witch hunts. If they keep bothering you (and they are a bother) stall.
If all else fails find an old line printer and print out the contents of every mailbox and tell them you don't have time to go through it all. So they can.
Computer were beige before the Apple II. I read an article last year about why computers are beige and it all took place before apple came along. I wish I could remember where I read it.
I'm not one to defend Clinton, but he is no more guilty than the overwelming majorities in both houses that voted for this thing. Why because thier idiots... OK there idiots and lots of very rich copyright holders (publishers, record compainies, Movie studios...) and the American bar association told them how much they needed it.
I believe there may be a loop-hole in it though. If it didn't get edited out in the final version it requires the copyright holder to take leagal action within some resonably small amount of time (my memory fails me on the particulars) then the copyright owner (by not taking legal action) gives up their copyright. Now you see why the American bar association was in favor of this. I can nolonger just send you a letter saying quit violating my copyright, now if I do that I also have to sue you or loose my copyright.
I think the time has come completely re-think copyrights, patents and trademarks. The global nature of the Internet as made it so you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone in the intellectual property.
I thought these were called keyboard nipples.

I wonder if they read MIME
I saw some of Dr. Whites early work on the Learning Channel. It was some special about the dangers of banning research.
In 1971 (not a typo) after the first full body transplant, a law was passed (US) that banned research into brain, head, and full body transplants.
One of the names mention who could benefit from a full body transplant was Stephen Hawking. His body is dying, his brain is not.
This show was on right after the UK banned cloning research a couple years ago. I don't remember the name.
If I remember correctly Bill sold off most, if not all, of his M$ stock a while back.
