    But remember that 300W is 300W rms - about 350W peak.

    My desktop doesnt draw anything near 500W though, it's only get a 250W PSU. Any way I can measure the current (and hence power) without jamming an ammeter in the socket?

    The crux of the matter is will a lower-rated UPS run a higher-rated system for a shorter time, without melting?

    I was comparing the idioticity of the name and the value of the respective units. Google's wrong, if 1 slug = xNm, then it is x kgm^2s^-2. A newton is a measure of force, a slug is a unit of force multiplied by distance. I might want a unit of force, but unless you give me a distance, a slug ont be any good whatsoever.

    Mixing and matching force and mass is just the tip of the iceberg of what is wrong with the imperial system for scientific calculations.

    a slug isnt a unit of mass. Mind you, thats the problem with imperial - you confuse mass and force, and use pounds for both.

    I want to get a UPS to power 3 computers and a modem for something on the order of 10 seconds when power drops. Do I really need a full blown 1000VA UPS for megabucks? Can I use a lower VA rating for less time? How much power does a typical base unit use. Howabout a CRT?

    Slugs are worse then stones. Converting from stones is a simple x * stones, where x is about 6.4. Slugs are used somewhere in physics to make rocket science as hard as it is.

    TRouble is it opens in a new window - not a new tab. Only way to change it, that I know of, invloved hackign the source and recompiling.

    Also, I'd like real full screen for web -> tv applications (no toolbars), and (inline) spell checking in text boxes in the browser, and new windows that pop up on clicking a link to default to a new tab.

    You wont do anything to your desktop, however (with the right switches and routers) you can have 100,000 100mbit desktops running at full speed.

    Speed limiters? Really? My old car does 110mph easy, and perfectly leagally too, on German motorways. It's a UK registered car. I've driven newer cars at 115-120 on the (empty) motorway too (M5 on christmas eve). Limit my speed to 70 and suddenly I cant drive safely in Italy (average speed arround 90-100), Germany (no speed limits, outside lane routinely hits 130mph), or pretty much any other country in the EU (with limits over 70mph/112kph)

    Unless this tattler box can show up to testify against you, your case will be thrown out.

    Erm, thousands are convicted each week because of a grey pole with a box on the top - either speed cameras or congestion charges. I dont remember being able to cross-examine them in court.

    Not to mention most people cant afford to
    1) take the day off work to dispute the fine
    2) if found guilty pay costs

    Laziness? Unproductivity? Thats not commumism. Commumism (generally believed to be capitalism's opposite) is basically slavery, where you are forced (upon an unspecified threat, exile at best) to work for the benefit of society. Work harder, smarter, longer or faster, and you dont get any benefit.

    No, somewhere where you dont do any productive work, and spend you days lounging arround, is called college.
