I'm also one of those people eagerly willing to wade through the 90% to find the 10% I want to talk to, which hopefully keeps me from really being ageist, sexist OR racist. Although, honestly, having been in orchestra for most of my life (I play the violin), I AM convinced that Asian women, at least, are mildly worse drivers than average. The government's fairly blatant cover-up of 9/11 is pretty horrific. Compared to their complicity and subsequent cover-up of JFK's assassination, they've done what can only be described as a piss-poor job.

Besides the fact that the demolitions were completely obvious, and the presence of molten steel for weeks afterward completely indicates incendiaries, the put-options and stock market chicanery are well well documented, and the owner of the buildings was even quoted directly, "I was talking to the fire Marshall, and I said, 'We've had such a terrible loss of life, maybe the best idea is just to pull it.' So that's what we did, we made the decision to pull." Pull being a well known demolition term meaning "Bring the building down", and then watching video of the WTC7 coming down... combined with the fact that news sources including the BBC somehow knew it was going to collapse ahead of time..

At the very least there is clearly complicity and fore-knowledge and a cover up regarding WTC7. It doesn't really stand to reason that the other rather incredible demolitions weren't also therefore connected, especially given that Marvin Bush, a well known and well connected criminal was in charge of security for the weeks up to September 11th.

Did you really want to stick your foot in your mouth and talk about 9/11 in some kind of discrediting tone and look like a jack-ass? Or were you just being a shill for some corporate entity?

With the inherently poor design decisions that seem to consistently go into FOSS projects, such as Ubuntu and OpenMoko, I have to wonder if they don't have some voracious and vocal corporate plants somewhere in the project actively sabotaging the overall movement. But I'll admit that for experienced computer people, less informed questions from n00bies can be frustrating. I've been on both side of this coin more times than I'd like to count, and I sympathize with some of the Linux nerds. They just need to take a deep breath, slow down, and link to a good FAQ that solves the problem that is usually VERY common, and has been had by about 20 windows converts probably that very day.

Not an easy thing to try to remember to do, what with the pressures of real life, and the annoying tendencies of Windows converts to blindly run into the same walls over and over again.

  16. Why I still have to boot into Windows. on Linux Needs More Haters · · Score: 4, Interesting

    I'll give fair crits.

Let me say first and foremost, that I prefer booting into Ubuntu and using that as my daily driver. Sometimes I just can't though.

Here is a list of short reasons why:

Skype seems to be faster, and work better in w32. My video gets sent at higher resolution, and I can hear the other party better. Dunno why, this is just the case.

7zip is screwed up in Linux. I installed a wine version, AND a native version, only the wine version will start and it flickers and won't let me select a package to extract. Making it unusable.

Random crashes. I mean, probably as many or more as I get regularly in Windows, with the added inconvenience of ctrl+alt+bckspce not being near as good as ctrl+alt+delete, which brings up a handy task menu for me to clean up (usually).

No two sound things going at once. Sometimes I like to put on mp3s, and THEN go kill people in Urban Terror. This is easy and works perfect in W32, but not in Ubuntu, I just get the mp3s, and NO sound in a game whilst they are playing.

TVtime not recognizing my TV card. Dscaler turns on perfectly in Windows. So does TVtime in Ubuntu, but then the screen is blue and there is no menu for me to figure out what is wrong, either.

Joost. Works in windows, not in Ubuntu. I'm sure partially Joost's fault, but still sad.

Civilization 2. Best/funnest version of the game, will not play in wine even though it's like 10 years old.

I like how Windows arranges it's GUI, start button, quicklaunch, then task list, then systray and clock. Less real estate, all the same functionality, but without a top AND bottom bar.

Zsnes. Does not work in any way shape or form, or under wine.

What Linux gets RIGHT however is it's ability to find and install 99% of my hardware without me hunting for hours for drivers, inclusion of most of the software I prefer (firefox, gimp, pidgin, open office, cd burner), Compiz Fusion (blows every Windows attempt away!), and it's open source nature. There is something good knowing the code to my machine is inspected by lots of eyes, not just one corporation, and it's also good to know that if I was knowledgeable enough, some of those eyes could be mine.

Honestly Linux feels "closer" than it ever did. It just needs to solve a few naggling issues before it can fully dominate the world by desktop. Another way it could do so is by being AHEAD of the curve. It would be nice if there was a superior FOSS Skype killer, since skype is actually deficient in numerous ways, including not being FOSS. Speex is a better speech compression algorithm, so it would seem like we have the tools in hand to beat the current corporate paradigm too, and yet it sadly isn't happening.

  20. An important distinction. on The Pirate Bay's Plans To Encrypt the 'Net · · Score: 1

It's important with these kind of topics to discuss the difference between illegal and immoral. Part of the whole PROBLEM is that so much that is NOT immoral is illegal. I think that ALL information should be free (and I'm a musician!), and that includes all media, software, and the like. There are historically many great minds that also feel this way and frankly diminish me both in their eloquence and lucidity on the subject. My personal favorite is probably Benjamin Franklin:

"As we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours; and this we should do freely and generously."

I would argue that all media, software, or anything else that can be transferred as 1s and 0s would qualify as an "invention" in modern terms.

And for that reason, I use TOR, and just about any other tool possible to protect myself legally, as I feel very confident on moral grounds. Furthermore, I strongly advocate civil disobedience in a society where our "free" market has been completely overrun by corporate monopolies and the government is now owned outright by those same monopolies.

What needs to happen now is that TOR and other technologies like the discussed Pirate Bay one night to be improved, used more widely, and made more robust. Frankly, I'd prefer a global ad hoc wifi network running fully encrypted and fully p2p for all data.

Putting the genie back in the bottle of content control and pay for play is never going to happen anyway, no matter where you stand morally or legally on the issue. So really this whole discussion is moot. However, we should clearly outline the moral issues (and listen to greater minds like Franklin) for other reasons moving forward in the future.
