  1. Stop the celebration on Microsoft Common Language Runtime To Be Cross-Platform · · Score: 4, Informative
    From the blog:

Microsoft is not opening up the source code to the Core CLR. It is opening the code to the DLR by posting it to the Microsoft CodePlex source-code repository under a Shared Source Permissive license.

It has been said that people will not change unless something is preceived to be 10 times better. The problem is nothing has been perceived to be that much better, so people stay with what they know.

  8. Re:Water Vapor? on Emissions of Key Greenhouse Gas Stabilize · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yes, water vapor contributes the most to the Greenhouse Effect. I have always wondered how much we affect the climate through irrigated fields and a host of other means of adding water vapor to the atmosphere. The debate happens when you consider clouds and latent heating (water vapor becoming liquid). Then it becomes less clear on what the net effect of water in all its forms has on the climate. This is an active area of study and there is still a lot to learn.

  9. Good Fit on Yahoo! Goes To Print · · Score: 1

I think of Yahoo primarily as a media company, so having all these newspapers make use of Yahoo's web space and advertising know-how makes a lot of sense. Yahoo is pursuing and focusing on its strength. It is consistent with the "The Peanut Butter Manifesto". It is a good fit for the newspapers and Yahoo.

  10. Trust on OpenSourcing Yourself, Are You Ready? · · Score: 1

Being open is good, if you can trust the person or the group. Being open does not create the needed trust. Unfortunately people don't always act in ways that promote trust. Many times people act in ways that are selfish and without regard and concern for others. We all have been selfish and uncaring at one time or another. That is why people make commitments and covenants with others so that safe places to openly share can be created and maintained.

  11. Audio CD more expensive than DVD on Retailers Pressure Studios on Web Deals · · Score: 1

I am a little late in posting, but I checked Amazon. The Little Mermaid DVD (2 DVDs) costs $14.87 (full price $29.99) and the The Little Mermaid audio CD (1 CD) costs $14.99 (full price $18.98). So I can get the DVDs for less money than the audio CD. That does not seem right, yet from my experience it seems to be not that unusual. (To be fair I listed the full prices too which seems more in line with my expectations.) Is the demand that much higher for the audio CD than for the DVD? It is my guess that the wholesale prices of the audio CDs are inflated.

  12. Whoa, there. on Will the Next Election Be Hacked? · · Score: 1, Informative
One of the major problems with exit polling in the 2004 election was that there was a radically different turnout in terms of demographics compared to the 2000 elections. The big group that was motivated to vote was the Christians who were damn sure not to let gays get the right to vote.
Please stop and consider what you just said. You said 3 things that are wrong.
    1) Exit polling is not affected by demographics, only by those who vote.
    2) Christians are not all anti-gay and Republican.
    3) Gays had the right to vote then and have the right to vote now.

  14. Too Much! on Social Networking Goes Big Business · · Score: 3, Interesting

Is it me, or has the amount of advertising reached an all time high? Everywhere I look I see "Buy! BUY! Buy!" No wonder the national saving rate is currently negative. We are digging ourselves way into debt. I think this is not good in the long term. I wonder how long can this last and if there will be a backlash.

Advertising on social networking sites looks like a good idea, but I wonder when people will say no more and avoid these advertisement websites. I think people will eventually look for web communities where advertising is a minimum. And many people will pay for advertising-free websites.

  15. Judicial Nominations on Tracking the Congressional Attention Span · · Score: 1

I suspect the reason Congress is spending more time on judicial nominations is that in the last 20 years judges have been playing a bigger role in government. They seem to have become the final authority in the government. The balance of power seems to have shifted toward the Judiciary.

  16. Adult Usage on No OLPCs for Indian Schoolchildren · · Score: 1

I wonder how many of these laptops will end up being used by adults for the family business? This may not be a bad thing. The parent gives the child a task of finding out how this laptop can help them in their business, or how the laptop can help them start a new business. The parent and the child will learn something about using computers and the family income will rise.

I think we are just beginning to understand cells and there is a lot more complexity to be discovered.

  18. Outlook not good but there is hope on Stephen Hawking Asks The Internet a Question · · Score: 1

Looking back though history, we can see several attempts at utopian society. All these attempts have failed. With today's technology we can easily destroy ourselves, and the need for something close to an utopian society to bring peace seems to becoming more and more necessary. The problem is not at the government level or at the family level. The problem is at the individual level. Each one of us has gone beyond the need of self preservation to being selfish, self-centered, and self absorbed. This is the root of our problems, and this eventually corrupts every human institution and undertaking, no matter how noble.

I believe there is a solution to this overwhelming problem. The solution can not be found in ourselves. We would mess it up. We need to seek a higher power. I believe that we have been created and that we have a creator, God. I believe that he has the solution. Jesus Christ came into the world to show us God and how much he loves us. That he did and he died for our wrong doing and rose from the dead to show us that he has a good life for us. Believing in him, starts a process of changing us and removing that self centeredness. His spirit dwelling in us enables us to change. That is the only hope we have. (Note churches are human institutions that are subject to the same corruption.)
