Technical aspects aside, you do realize that MS's is as much about trying tp control markets, share price , investment capital, etc. MS has alwways used 'vaporware' products to gain any advantage doing so adds to the bottom line. Legal ? As long as it is viewed and discussed , as on/., as a technical issue instead of a marketing ploy, the Soapy Smith heritage of MS will not get its day in court.
I think the upcoming Sarge release will have 13-14 cd's:-) Of course you don't need all those cd's, you could burn the same number as your favorite distro, and probably have a similar package selection. The 14 cd's represent as complete a selection of Free software that I know of.
Or,AFAIK, Sarge will have , available, a dual layer dvd image also, one disk to rule them all;-)
So it the prezentation did not work, blame it on/. or Apple or anyone other than MS stuff (technical term for you/.'ers). bottom line, MS presentation did not work, spin it anyway you like.
I think you mis-understand the use of free in regards to *nix & Linux. These OS"S do have cost's, most are born by folks donating their time as opposed to being paid to create something. I think I heard a figure of $176 million for the developement time to re-create the Linux 2.6 kernel. It is not to far fetched to consider Free Unix. http://www.dwheeler.com/essays/linux-kernel -cost.h tml
Booting from a Network means, to me, there is an eprom on the nic card that supports whatever you are trying to do.I haven't ran into many such nic cards in the average users box, even the un-average:)
Booting from a floppy or cd/dvd and doing a network install is something else.
I have bought numerous dvd-rom players and all came with licensed copy of dvd player software. I have a drawer full of licenses. I have to say I believe having numerous licenses to play dvd movies allows me to do just that, platform independant.
Where did this (pdf file) come from. It could be a hoax, or just more FUD to stir up the Slashdot crowd. The first page of refers to the GPL as a 'Public Domain License'. This is so off the wall as to invalidate reading further. SCO whats to invalidate the GPL license by having software using it declared Public Domain. If SCO does not succeed then thay are in violation of the GPL license, which does respect copyright.
The arcticle does mention running Linux on Alphas, My guess running Linux on SGI hardware would be fast also, if possible. I know Linux is free to aquire, hardware is what does the number crunching, and what costs $$. Greg
I think Cowboy Bob was pulling our legs. Doing a Cron upgrade on Debian Unstable is a whole different OS than doing Debian Stable/security. As the dip wad below points out though ( ad naseum) security is a hands on affair. Apt-get upgrade only upgrades packages already on your system, no new ones added without your permisions.
Debian Woody is available in DVD, being able to have one disk to rule them all is about the only advantage of DVD, i.e. not a good storage option unless you only have a few gb worth of data.
Its actually OO.org:) But I agree it works/looks better on my NT4 box than my smokin Debian workstation:( The added features of SO, esp, the WP8 filters, differentiate SO from OO.org
Well just because I haven't seen one does not mean much. I build firewalls (free to good homes) out of 486 desktops for cable modem or dsl users, assisited living facitiies etc. It would be nice to recycle as much of the old stuff as possible, wireless is one more option.
ps. If anyone wants to get rid of any 3com 3c509 cards...go for it:) gomadtroll@nospamoperamail.com
Most(at least the same % as PC windows users,95%?)hardware is manufactured for Windows. The fact that hardware works with GNU/Linux is a testament to the Linux commuity not the hardware manufaturers. I do get tired of having to investigate, or try to, what chipset is on some boxed shrink wrapped piece of hardware that has the Windows and/or Mac logo on it. Just mention 'chipset' to some sales folks and they look at you like your from the X-files.
While this is a good question, (gpl, gnu) I don't believe it should be the first question raised about contributions to the GNU/Linux code base. Just my own HO, but a thanks to HP for coming to the party .
It is always appreciated when someone in the community does the work, i.e. the 'netinstall iso. You can also use Disk 1 from Potato, gets you to the same place:)

For Linux users, XPDF is a good option, you don't need Adobe.

Since the court case, against IBM, won't be heard by the courts until 2005, 2004 will be a year of FUD by SCO, and growth in the GNU/Linux community.

okay..most folks don't have the $$ to hire the lawyers it will take to do this.. just talk.

Or maybe he (Neal)really doesn't know
Not so, with all the Apple Power PC's with OS X loaded it may be the fastest growing OS. Of course this probably only clouds your reality.
What a wierd submission though.

Here is a link to a list of Seattle are Linux Users Groups. Sometimes a little onsite hand-holding helps :)

Last time I checked the venerable 486 didn't have any PCI slots, it does do mighty fine with isa nic's and Smoothwall/IPCOP though.

The server edition of WP for Unix had/has a console mode. :)
Yes & expensive
The missing piece for your fantasy is the re-education camps for those who's reality differs ever so slightly from yours.
