This has already been done with quite a success as far as I know. Several record companies flooded the p2p networks with fake songs, and the result was extremely efficient.
However, another idea that I fancy, is that bought mediums should contain extremely high quality products, say that dvds take up something above 100 gB of space. By far, 1 gB of download today is not very much, but few people are interrested in downloading a dvd-rip of 50 gB or more. This will in the end give the paying consumer the quality we deserve, and pirates the disadvantage they deserve.
If RIAA and other cartels of poducers had taken the basic economic laws into consideration, instead of setting a fixed price, they would be able to miximize their revenue, and get rid of the blackmarket over time. That would make everybody happy. I don't see very much reason in the producers acting in this way, they are actually the ones losing money.
Well, in many cases yes. That is why we have a lot of children thinking their best buddy will not die if they kick him in the head at full power. However, this movie raises the very same concept of Descart, and the idea of us basicly being brains (or bodies) in a neutrous tub linked to a fictional world (Descart said created by a demon) is not new.
Even though I can agree that 'books are for thinkers', this movie makes some of the biggest philosophical questions available to more people (those who frown when they hear the word philosophy, because they can't be bothered exploring it). The movie has a number of logical leaps and errors, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't take the main idea as pure entertainment. Seriously, that would be ignorance.
I really hope that they take these questions further in 'reloaded' and 'revolutions', and do not just make this yet-another-action-trillogy. (I am seeing it this Wedensday, so expectations are high.)
I just remember a friend getting an 20 Gb iPod last Christmas. I keeps contantly crashing, or the playback freezes. That made me scratch iPod from my wishlist. They might look good, be small and portable. However, I would take the solid, a bit bigger Archos with Rockbox over the iPod anyday, when I see how bad his is. I might just have seen one unlucky case, but I hope Apple puts more pride in their workstations.
I agree, many people write Mandrake off as a desktop distro, and it is not right. I even conviced one of my friends to try linux (he had found this article comparing different OSs, and found out that window$ was like a lower-class station wagon which breaks down quite often, and linux was a free battletanks in comparrison). He called me under the insallation to tell me about how brilliant and simple the install and setup tools were. Here, however, the happy story as far as Mandrake goes ends. He got extremely bad refreshrates in X, the sort that can give you headaches, and it took me ages to find that the package-management tool had mixed packages from xfree 3.3.6 and 4.2.0.. I am now trying to convice him to try Debian, which I know better, and I consider having a better package management tool.
As far as linux passing no. of Mac users, I am not surprised, it is a brilliant OS! I would rather see linux and mac users pass the number of win users, now that would be a day of celebration!
However, I haven't seen anything beat the MacOSX gui. If I only could get the MacOSX gui in my linux, I would be the happiest of linux-users. *Sigh...*
(but what is up with the one-button mouse on macs?;])
When it comes out, I will buy it; if it comes in 2D, I'll be the first one to run to store! I was disapointed with Monkey Island IV, because they tried to change it more to 3D. For it to become a truely great sequel to 'Sam'n Max:hit the road', it has to continue in good old 2D, otherwise it just would not be the same.
I don't think it will be usable in Scum at the time of release or anytime near that. Lucas Arts are already quite annoyed with the people behind Scum, legal issues of some kind (but you guys are brilliant!).
In any case, I will buy it; I have been waiting for it since 1995! Pitty they don't make many games like this; FPS and RPGs are alright, but in my opinion they will never beat 2D adventure games like Sam 'n Max and Day of the Tentacle..
There is planty of use for 50 gB or 40 gB removable discs. And one thing is for sure, if these mediums become a standard; we buying dvds can get the quality we deserve, and it makes piracy a lot more difficult and time consuming. Isn't that "doubleplusgood" ?
I got a children's cookery-set. I think somebody feels I can't cook very well ;)
Didn't you read the post, it is intelligent enough to avoid obstacles - it will dodge them the way Neo does.
Wow, so this is how the robots took over..

Does this mean we can soon see small bits of laser fly through the air?
