I guess these sites don't test anyting. Maybe they are talking about small sites. I work for a big car company. We have three stages of testing.
I'm not saying the artical is wrong. The developers are still the biggest problem with our web site. It just doesn't always happen on Monday. Some times it takes tell Wednesday to get through the system.:-)
Will we be forced to use each service the way the service wants us to use it? I slice and dice all my communications. I watch what I want when I want. I forward some email to my phone. I email some voice mail to my office. I call my son via VOIP. I lisson to Amature Radio over the Internet. I think content matters not delivery. If I watch Six feet under on my laptop why should they care? I'm watching after all.
I've working in MIS for 25 years. I have a high school education and a brain.
In this time I have worked for two PHD's in computer science and both thought I also had a PHD because they had to come to me to find out how things realy work.
Licensing is simple a way to raise money for the state and create politics. Some times it makes some sence, medical doctors are licensed, but even there it simply creates a cover up indiscretions of the members. Bad doctors hardly every have their licenses revokes.
I don't know about your state. But in my state (Oklahoma) you have to go to school for two years to cut hair, two years put put plants in some ones yard, six months to train a hourse and eight weeks to be a cop.
Almost all licensing is wrong. Anyone with a screwdriver should be allowed to work on computers.
I meet computer programmers/enginers every day that are working on a dead end project and can't see it. I see Cobol programs that refuse to learn JAVA and hardware techs that refuse to learn DSP.
Watch whats getting hot. Learn XML, JAVA, the Linux kernel, encryption systems.
If you are holding on to something is this business your dieing and schools can't teach you this stuff. You have to go it alown. If there are more then two books about it on the book shelf at Barns & Noble its too old.
I was an electronics enginer. Now I run the web site for a F500 company.
At one time you wanted to learn the tech stuff. Don't stop. Never stop learning. That is what makes you good.
Ok I own one of these things too. They are nice. But as a amature radio guy I can know this was posible a long time ago.
The part the disterbs me is the fact they can write to your keyboard reciver. Just stay logged in, walk way, and I can enter a rm/* for you or maybey a scp -r mark@myserver.com:/stuff/root/*.
Anyone know where most people keep their GNU-CASH data directory?
I'm saddened to hear a gifted child would be so theatened by the very people he should be able to trust.
Kids should be guided. Bad acts should be turned to good. They should be told they have committed a crime and they will be going to jail "for years without a trial".
Ok this may not have been what the kid was told bit if he liked hacking he would have known what they did to Kevin M.
Strong examples (make by the goverment) lead to strong actions make by the public. Even kids get the message.
Having talked to the postmaster, I learned the way the post office counts this type of mail is by weighing it. They don't count each return.
So, I find me a good brick, wrap it in brown paper, tape on the return card with my return address showing in big letters and mail it.
It works.
I have even gotten back nasty letters from the people I mailed it to. Telling me they would never send me another catalog. Like that was a bad thing.:-)
There isn't anything you can do to a system that can't be reversed. Many have tried. All have failed. All you are only acomplishing pissing off buyers.
When you changed you policy, I canceled by order for two units. Now I'll just wait for an unhappy customer who wants to sale their unit to get my hands on one.
Your low price is nice but not the issue. I would spend $200+ to buy a unit. Buying good hardware is great. If it cost even more thats ok to. Good hardware is good hardware and if it's out of my price range that I can live with that. Putting gue on a system board to keep the "hackers" out is just insulting.
You need a good "open source" advisor. You are going at your problem all wrong.
Now MS has posted both side. The Truth about Linux and now the Truth about NT.
If your read between the lines. What you will hear is...
1. Windows users think NT will run on anything. 2. NT Doesn't play well with others. 3. Read number 2 again. 4. This is NT, You really nead an "Emergency Repair Disk". 5. Buy more memory, NT is a pig. 6. It says outloud "...Make user the guest account... is enabled - Relativily little security" need I say anything more. 7. Not true. Re-read number 6. 8. It dosn't work - Go back 5 years. 9. Even NT Fixes don't fix anything. 10. NT is so hard to load everyone is looking for another way to do it.
I beleive AOL does news and web searches on everone looking for a job at AOL. I know other companies are doing this.
How have you been in the News? Did your kids win a socker game? Did you buy a new house? Have you been arrested for durnk driving? Do you post to HATE news groups? What does your web site say about you? Do you like guns?
It's tuff that "The Man" has desided a buch of use aren't worthy to play with.
Maybe Redhat can give back in other ways. I'd like it if Redhat would just supply me with a free CD every time they come out with a new release. What would that cost?.50$ plus postage?
Microsoft hands out CDs to beta testers. Maybe Redhat should use some of their 60+Million dollars they will raise in this IPO and start a Developer update program.
I setup and managed a mail system with over 50k users for the state of Oklahoma.
We used Control Data's MailHub. A system built on a portable x500 database send/pop mail and Perl scripts. It ran on a SUN spark box.
These days you could replace the hold thing with an LDAP server and Linux.
I'd use large Intel box (dual PentumIII) with 128m of memory and 19gig of hard disk, mirrored. This would be a good start. Strip down the Linux system, only run mail on it. Put the LDAP on another box same size and power.
I'd use Open LDAP for the user server. Then write some Perl scripts (Web forms) to update and manage the LDAP data. (The PHP module for Apache would work good too.)
If needed, use a round robin DNS to balance the load between several POP servers. These servers will all need to connect up to one large file server. I'm using IBM's AFS file system. It's better then NFS.

I don't think this was Redhat's falt. They made a best effert to give back to the people who have been developing code in the RedHat distribution.
I have a friend who is a member of GNOME. He is 16 and received a letter. Even with 50k in his pocket, there is no way he could answer the letter. He can't sign a contract.
I was hopping to answer the letter for him. RedHat doesn't know him. The trading company dosn't know him. They just made the offer to an email address.
I am also a developer so he was glad to let me take it over. However, I know better then to put 1.5k into an account only to be told NO.
If I had real money, I'd Buy the email address of some of the people who can't take advantage of the letter and buy lots of shares.
It is what you add to Linux that makes you good. If Redhat continues to add code improvements (Like RPM) or just continues to be a GREAT marketing name (something my bos recignizes) I'll continue to support them.
The day they apear to have just put code in a box i'll stop buying. (Like Slackware)
I heard Young says he is selling a brand name. I hope this dosn't loose site of what this work is. A colabritive effert to make the computer world better.

May be. But at least my parrents are NOT related.
Just ejoy where you live. If you feer about these things move. I live in OKC. I've helped dig people out. But I still wouldn't move.
Will we be forced to use each service the way the service wants us to use it?

And I'm still working.
We had a Oracle/Email server go bad and had to restore from scratch (except the data) on an IBM RISC S-70. (Bad hardware upgrade)
This is a database for a production E-Commerence application. $DOLLARS$ flying out windows.
Thank GOD we switched from an NT system to a UNIX system or I'd Be here all year.
Check out TAPR . Some people are even sending their email to their Palm Pilots this way.
KD5AMB
When TUX (Wheezy) came on screen I know what toy I wanted for Christmas.
But, I can't find one anywhere.
Check out GNUPro from cygnus. I think these to products may work real good together.
GNUPro is more then a debuger. It has it's own version of the compiler optimized for Pentum processors. It really is faster.
But the debuger is not to notch but good.

If you think this is a scam. Post your ID and Passwrod from your letter here.
If a bunch of people post the offer will be withdrawn I'm sure.

What about all the amateur radio operators. Tens of thousands where picking up the astronots on their own equipment.
You got it almost right.
