This is a wonderful idea where a "dashboard" essentially acts as a memory augmentation tool. It watches what you are doing and presents information it thinks might be relevant. For example, if you are chatting with someone on IRC, it will look for information about that person and present it to you (such as their name, homepage, recent blog entries etc).
That's like Professor Farnsworth's AOL terminal of the future:
"Shut up, friends! My internet browser heard us saying the word Fry and it found a movie about Philip J. Fry for us. It also opened my calendar to Friday and ordered me some french fries."
Like others, I can not see myself using Dashboard or the likes either. It sounds like Clippy on steroids.
Moderators On Crack, listen up... this is nothing but an elaborate Gentoo zealot troll, but a troll nontheless. Be a little critical. He got ALL his non-geek friends and ALL his family using Mandrake? He believes the debian servers are still compromised? Get real.
"I dispute your theory that many people have inate desires for children. If that was the case then I doubt it would be the social misdemeanour it is today."
That was unfortunate wording, I meant that as in "many more than you think", not as in "a large part of the population".:)
"Regardless of whether you think paedophilia is right or wrong,..."
I don't suppose you distinguish between pedophilia and sex that involves children. One is a sexual orientation, the other is a serious crime. I can't see I said a word about sex.
"you know that feeling you get when you look at a nice looking woman?"
No, but I'll be gracious enough to take your point;)
I guess my point is that if the person is so unsafe "in the wild" that they have to allow people to check who he is and where he lives and works, that person shouldn't have been let out in the first place. I'm pretty sure that the attraction cannot be cured anymore than they'd be able to "cure" your attraction to women, but behaviorcan be changed, people can improve. Sure there are some notorious drooling violent schizophrenic maniacs to whom that does not apply, but I have to believe it applies to people in general, lest I lose my faith in mankind at large.
If I were a parent in that situation, I'd be hysterical, bitter and resentful, and most of all, completely irrational. I can't see why my opinion should matter with me in that state. It's not like we ask the opinions of socker moms for what a law should say just because that law concerns children.
This is just the electronic version of "Don't like someone? Just accuse them of child molestation and get the word out."
Or the earlier "Don't like someone? Just accuse them of communism and get the word out."
Or the even earlier "Don't like someone? Just accuse her of witchcraft and get the word out." (of course this was flawed since it provided no means for terminating males, but sex accusations took care of that once and for all).
"It is impossible to exist harmoniously with people like that because no matter how hard they may try, they will always have an inate desire for children. And that is a risk too high to take."
You may not realize it, but many people will always have inate desires for children, but not act upon it. This group constitutes the majority of pedophiles (you can choose not to believe that, look at me care). So the truth is that they DO coexist harmoniously (although with varying degrees of happiness), and even if the risk is too high, there is nothing anybody can do because there's no way of identifying these people.
Of course your sexual orientation does not time out, but whatever that orientation is, the person is an individual, and individuals have choices, and principles to help them make those choices. It is the role of legal punishment and rehabilitation to help people make choices so as to better function in a civilized society. By permanently putting a mark on their foreheads, you exclude that person from society forever, you basically tell them "you will always molest children, you can not improve", which is not a good incentive to start actually improving.
I think every criminal should be able to do their time and then get on with life, under the fair assumption that the due has been paid. This is pretty much the whole point of a legal system with prisons, right?
By publishing all this personal info, the authorities express concern that the crime might be repeated. So why do they let him or her out on the street again in the first place?
This "we have this legal system, but it doesn't apply for groups X and Y" attitude is dangerous and incoherent.
I recently watched a "preview" of ROTK, where the actors and staff were "interviewed" and said things like "if you want to know how it ends, you'll have to wait for the movie". Peter Jackson even managed to say "we saved the best movie for last". Does anyone at all remember that enigmatic old man named Tolkien who actually came UP with this whole epic? Will it be Jackson that in the future will be remembered as the lord of the lord of the rings?
You're right that "people" (as in people) don't read the books. It's too bad, because it's the book that tells the actual story. Jackson films a loose adaptation of the story, but it isn't actually Lord of The Rings. The stories are just too different, and while the movie stories are good, I think it's too bad that most people won't hear the "real" story. You know, like meet the "real" Faramir, not some selfish evil slime like the guy with the same name in the movies. And not the simplified explanations of everything that the movies necessitate.
I'm well aware of Trolltech's abuse of the world "commercial". It's clear that when using the GPL'd Qt, your resulting products will have to be GPL as well. But they can still be commercial, so Trolltech should change their wording.
I can't see anyone has mentioned the hilarious and honest name of this new act: CAN-SPAM ("Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act").
Is that a sound analogy? I think it would be better to say "... but you wouldn't let them hit the library without at least asking what they'll be reading, would you?" -- and yes, I would.
Gentoo may be great (I actually think saying otherwise is a federal offence), but you can't evade the fact that it pretty much doesn't care about software freedom. It's so easy to install unfree nvidia or ATI drivers (the ebuilds are all integrated), and I think even the install docs hint at how to install them. This complete lack of division between free and unfree is one of the things that seriously drove me to Fedora. I sleep better at nights now. (So what, laugh at me, go on)

I can't believe I laughed at that -- WHO gets jokes like that? Excellent joke, wonderfully decadent.
Ok, we'll restrict our slaughtering of whales to the guilty ones from now on.
Actually, I think he's 19.
That's right, so without the benefits of being EU members, we still have to carry the burden, and implement idiotic things like EUCD. Sucks to be us.

... for the US jam industry. They can jam anything with that stuff.

And also, it would violate the GPL and GNUs criteria for software freedom.
There is plenty of Tolkein left in its pristine unfilmed state, the Silymarilyn
Silly Marillyn? I thought those guys got caught "cheating" on concerts and stuff... oh wait...

You can write commercial software with the free Qt, but it has to be GPL licensed. What you can't write is closed-source or unfree software.
I can't see anyone has mentioned the hilarious and honest name of this new act: CAN-SPAM ("Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act").
Waste countless hours and whole days instead of studying for the finals, why?
Is that a sound analogy? I think it would be better to say "... but you wouldn't let them hit the library without at least asking what they'll be reading, would you?" -- and yes, I would.

All modern code today derives from SCO's venerable Unix code (more or less an actual Darl quote), so it's all SCO code.
