    It "sucks"? How so? Personally, I don't see the results to be substantially different from those from Google, the interface is similar so is the speed, and the feature set.

    It's more complicated that that. The letter of the law and the intent of the law are different and patent lawyers are paid a lot of money to explain in the patent application why a piece of equipment, that is entirely generic except for the software running on it, is not a software invention.

    The GPS data is no better than your word; it could be easily faked.

    It is better. If its your word you could easily be mistaken. To fake the GPS data you have to be willing to commit perjury. That's a pretty serious risk to take to get out of a ticket.

    Would this create a precedent? I don't now abut US law but in a lot of places, the lowest courts don't set precedent.

    The judge didn't give a very good answer, but unless the woman had a specific reference to the constitution, and why this was unconstitutional, rather than relying on the judge to essentially guess what she was on about, the constitution doesn't apply.

    There is innocent until proven guilty. In practice, courts seems to be pretty lackadaisical over this matter in the case of minor offences such as traffic offences.

    There are variants. CC is a set of licences. I think all require attribution. You may allow or disallow derivitives, you may allow or disallow commercial use, and may allow or disallow "share-alike" (i.e.only allowed in products if you allow others to modify those)

    The Lord of The Rings is 6 books, often published as 3 volumes. The Fellowship of the Ring is the name of both Book 2 and Volume 1.

    But really, how many people will want to to do this? Most users will want to buy commercial games, and aren't going to be interested in modifying their console. And this will only allow people to bypass the security, not force Sony to make it easy to do so. It took years for this crack to appear.

    Indeed they do. And your rationale makes sense. It does strike me as odd that it is just this version that is explicitly mentioned. I'm sure GPL v2 is still substantially more common and I see absolutely no reason why MS didn't explicitly include v2 since they did include other GPL variants.

    Yes. The dominant format had really poor quality.

    You buy one, and it belongs to you. You don't need anybody's permission to record*

    Tivo without a sub has pretty much the same functionality as a VCR. You can program a time and channel.

    Punitive damages are really a bit of a nasty patch. Sure, it makes sense that fundamentally anti-social behaviour should be punished, but if we're going to punish rather than balance, then shouldn't the standard be beyond reasonable doubt? And why should the victim get more than restoration (assuming that includes covering the cost and inconvenience of having to file a lawsuit)?

    Both. The box was available with or without the subscription and a lifetime subscription available afterwards.

    With a set top box, you simply record from the analogue output of the STB, and the device had a remote control emitter that you connect to the STB. You could do this with series 1 US Tivo as well.

    Not really convoluted. Throw out the STB remote and control everything via Tivo. The on screen guide is better than most STBs mini-guide anyway. Everything in Europe uses SCART and Tivo had a SCART connection for the VCR, one for the STB and one for the TV, so handles widescreen switching, spooling to VCR, and switches automatically on the VCR switch signal.

    Well, these were customers a decade ago. Not any more. Most of them paid for the lifetime subscription. Tivo isn't making any money from them.

    Children typically get lesser sentences, focussed more on reformation that retribution or deterrence.

    So, would you agree that this boy should be given a lesser sentence since as a child, he can't be held completely responsible for his actions?

    The thing is, we've all considered the possibility that this happened exactly as the girl said. The GP was playing devils advocate to suggest a plausible alternative. He's not saying either is right. Simply that we need more information to establish which is the correct sequence of events.

    What about Symbian or WP7? Have you actually tried them or are you relying on the opinions of others who may be swayed by who has the coolest ads?

    Marketing is a lot more subtle tan you seem to think.

    True. But it doesn't need to be the best. Simply better than a random sample. Knowing that the Apple brand will meet a certain quality is more important than whether it's actually the best.

    Well, many people in the industry consider it to be the best OS and hardware because of Apple's marketing.
