I am an IT manager and the best thing you can do is to defend your "guys". They want a bigger screen? More RAM? More Time? Give it to them!!
Shield them from all other PHBs, be their umbrella (ella, ella, ey, ey). When the shit hits the fan, take it like a man and don't let them get hit by it.
When one of the guys isn't helping the rest out, send him away.
Ask them what you should do.
In short: Don't become a manager, become a leader.
Well, i prefer a walk-over-the-the-other-person myself instead of email (with 100+ mails a day it's not useable anymore) and a telephone call never ensures me that the other person is paying attention.
But IM works for me as well, I love the presence feature of it... it's great for the short notices and file swaps...
Wouldn't Pay-per-view cable or through Internet make this whole idea redundant?
I have a digital cable decoder at home and by using the remote control i can order a movie or music (almost there) and WITHOUT leaving the house. No way I am going to the rental shop and get myself a disposable DVD or CD, i have to dispose it in a special bin somewhere??
Uuuuuhm Jabber uses a open protocol, the application can still be proprietary work. So this ain't a answer to his question, and making money by working on software isn't an evil thing to do. Maybe they have build an messenger based on Jabber and did some work on the Open Jabber Deamon thingy....
no chance?
Sure, ask your girlfriend......
Why??
Does it run the android apps?
Does it run the iPhone apps?
You don't need no stinking apps/app store because you have all the apps you need...
Please ellaborate...
$2900 US Dollars.... that ain't much in real (non-us) money!

How handy !(pun intended)
As you write that client windows weren't allowed outside the parent window I come to the conclusion that you haven't used windows beyond Windows 3.1x.
It may not be a right platform for you to use, but please don't be a typical slashdotter and rant about things you don't know anything about.
Calypso is the client for you.
Although development has stopped for it, U still can use it (for free).
It stores all mail in a single DB file, which can be password protected.
The DB file can contain mutiple acounts.

It works like a charm for me using swt on windows.
Have a look at http://www.thisiscool.com/gcc_mingw.htm for the windows version.
Also the java application still works as a java application using Linux and MacOSX (still using swt).
Making it on the headlines of slashdot
reading all the comments....with suggestions of names....
Duuuh, we can win this, if they use a name that is in one of the comments.... their name is ours
*evil grin*

Well naming a product a girlsname gives us the oppertunity to chat with each with not sounding like total geeks...
like
geek1: "Have you used Susan too?"
geek2: "Yeah, i am so sattisfied with the result.."
geek3: "Susan sucked!"
good option!
iDunno
How about a life ?
Well I think what they are trying to say is that we don't have to get building material to space camp, we can use water.
this saves on packaging and weight for space travel...

Coding is just like creating art. :).
Some art is cheap, some artist give their art away for free (i.e. on subways
THAT is why (some) software is expensive.....
It could be several issues:
- The budget for a department is based on last years expenses. So why cut back next years budget?
- Experiences with other low cost projects.
- You needed a programmer AND a manager so they don't have to talk with you (and your tech-hubba-bubba language).
Or they just like buisness-suits.
Good to hear this is really what tech is surposed to do.
