Touching the Void is an amazing docu-drama film that will be opening in the States in January. It has been on in the UK for a few weeks and received fantastic reviews in the press and TV. I have never read a single bad comment on this film.
On the subject of Mail.app... I use IMAP mail on my server with about 10 folders. These work OK, but I am also presented with a list of hidden system folders like.ssh,.bash_history.
In thunderbird you can hide folders that start with a '.', or match public_html.
I have exactly the same problem, try to work in the day, but get distracted and end up working an night.
Accept it.. Don't even go near your computer in the day. Sleep in, do your food shopping, go to yoga in the day time. When all is quiet at night I start serious work, knowing I have to be quiet so as not to wake my flatmates.
I have just come back from the first part of a Java course at City University. The teacher emphasised that he was not grooming us for the Sun Exam, rather the concepts of OO modelling etc. The course cost £240 (about $350 USD) for ten weeks of two hours a week lessons.
Because it is better for non-urgent or discreet communication. Also sending a telephone number is A LOT better than by voice. Most phones can read the message and add the number to your address book.
I've used my palm Vx nearly everyday for last 3 years. The ONE thing keeps me using it is the rechargeable battery, and LONG battery life. If I had to run out to buy a set of AA every week I would have stopped using it. The Long battery life of 3 weeks on a full charge is great for extended trip. Palm Vx and mobile with infrared means I can keep checking emails quickly and easily.

I recently received some spam whose subject line contained just the name of my 4 month old nephew. It is not a common name either.
It seems unlikely they could send spam that was addressed only to me, with a name I had mentioned in several previous emails without some sort of email scanning.
Has any one else had this ?

I read some interesting benchmarks recently that said large performance can be got by moving your swap file on to a different dedicated partition, or even better on to a seperate hard disk.
Blueyonder are probably the biggest broadband supplier in the UK to homes. They use this method of MAC authentication.
They have a 'sef-care' page where you can register your own MAC address' yourself. Or you can phone up. Each person can have 10 MAC addresses.

My 2 year old samsung phone has an infra red port which I can use with my x86 Celeron Laptop and Palm Vx. It works great with any ISP, and most phones already have IR and built in modem.
Can you not get a Infra Red adaptor for your iBook and just use that ?? I have seen several PC versions but nothing for the Mac yet.
I have been using my.yahoo for a while now, and am really impressed. It can synch my palm, palm desktop, and yahoo, and some mobile phones. This means if enter an appointment in my Palm, then synch, Yahoo will send me a reminder email. It is great to know that what ever happens to my palm or desktop PC, all address, dates, memo and to-do list are all backed up and accessible on Yahoo. I can even get a CSV file of my address book etc.
A while ago I read an interesting 'business guide book' for westerners going to Japan, covering lunch and meeting etiquette etc.
The book couldn't stress enough about never making your client say 'No, I'm wrong' etc. Even though it may give you a few moments of pleasure watching the MCSE squirm in embrassment, and ignorance, it will be MUCH better if you can both come out winning.
Maybe you could suggest an alternative option, that would be good for her. That way neither of you have to admit to being wrong, and you both come out looking positive, helpful and co-operative, which will impress your bosses too.
I am surprised there is no mention of the landmark game Elite for the BBC. This was HUGELY popular, and even helped increase sales of the BBC. Check out New Kind for a realistic PC version, and Darkness Falls for a new slicker game.
Have you checked out SWiSH.
This is what it says about itself: Do you want to get into Flash(TM) but can't afford the steep price and even steeper learning curve? Then SWiSH is the tool for you!
Just have two OpenBSD boxes. The 'outside' box is an invisible firewall. Inside that you have a box doing NAT.
I ran this solution at previous employers, and had IPSec VPN, NAT, ipf, port forwarding on Windows Terminal services, SMTP, web etc all running very smoothly
I have been using Linux & Free/OpenBSD for many years.
It have never had so much trouble installing an OS as FreeBSD on my laptop. The USB keyboard was recognized, but wouldn't work, no matter what I tried. It would also be nice if they gave the option of installing X 4.1 or 3.3.6 (?)
After 3 days of fighting, with a system that never worked properly I installed Mandrake 8.1. Everything worked first time (X, USB, PS/2, digital camera, sound etc)
Using urpmi to install apps and dependencies makes it a breeze.
I'm sure FreeBSD would make an excellant webserver, probably faster and more stable. However on a laptop, or a home system with more 'exotic' hardware Mandrake Linux was up and running fully in less than hour.
shouldn't that be _decrease_ page load times

It is actually a bug with the driver for the new USB scrolling trackpad. This has been noted in various forums and Apple are aware of this problem.
If you plug in an external mouse and disable the trackpad, or replace the driver with SideTrack, the problem goes away.
This only effects the 2005 Powerbooks, and causes much higher CPU and memory load.

I heard an interesting rumour about OpenBSD's planned SMP support.
Apparently they were going to arrange it so that one CPU would be doing the normal OS stuff and the other CPU would just do crypto work.
This sounds simple and effective. Whilst not true SMP, it would make the machine faster, and use both CPUs.
