If Indrema decided to sell the specifications for their console at a reasonable price, I'm sure there would be a few companies interested in attempting to release their own system. The idea is to flood the market w/ Linux based consoles.

So let's say Indrema won't make as much money from doing this, but at least they might stay alive. Look at the way GNU/Linux is distributed. Several vendors each giving you slight variations of the same thing. The idea that the distribution of the consoles would be greater, and make it a more attractive platform to develop games for.

Indrema could take the initiative as being the company which offers certification of the games to insure compatibility. If that was the terms of licensing out the specifications to other companies, a standard for the games could be made.

    That actually MIGHT work.

  4. Re:Microsoft, the GPL, and the stock market. on I Suspect M$ That Has Broken The GPL · · Score: 1

Well, I think the reason this topic was brought up is due to several key issues:

Competing against a product which is free that does improve in increasingly less time.
Think about it, right now Linux is lagging in hardware support, total user friendliness, and market share when compared to Microsoft. To most companies, it appears the only advantage is price. But if enough companies move over to a GPL'd software scheme, and there is an increasing amount of developers for GPL software, it will eventually over take M$ in hardware support, user friendliness and every other reason why gnu/linux is not the leading platform.
As you say, Microsoft is maintaining its own "standards" of ".doc", ".xls", ".ppt", but if a company moves over to gnu/linux and they can convert these files to a compatible system with a low overhead they will. The number of programs being able to open these files is increasing at a steady rate as well. If this does keep up, M$ will be forced eventually. Its just a matter of time, and proper timing.

I expect M$ changing the way their standards operate VERY soon. Specifically so they can keep control of these standards. This is why .NET seems to be a top priority. Imagine if you save your files on a server run by Microsoft, if they can somehow "force" you to keep them on those servers so you can't change to a different software package which can open these files, they'll KEEP these companies in a position which makes it more expensive for them to change to something else.

But to sum up my point, if GPL'd software keeps a steady growth rate, one which is greater than Microsoft's, I can see M$ losing their current core market. I don't know right now how GPLing their software will help them, or keep them from going under, but I can see how GPL'd software will eventually be a very large threat to them.

  7. Intel has more in retail?!? haha on AMD Challenges P4 With 1.33Ghz · · Score: 2

I worked at a LARGE electronics retailer in Canada a year ago and we ALREADY were seeing a large number of Athlon based machines coming in. Athlon based computer are easier to sell also.
    Here's why:
Profit margins on PC's are really sad (retailers tend to aim for 7% on the computer itself).
Now if Athlon based machines sell for, $200 less than Intel machines, that leaves me with $200 of the customers money to spend on other things. This permits me to convince them that the $200 they saved by going with an Athlon can be used for extended warranty, and other accessories.
Extended Warranties and Accessories is where ALL the real profit is in computer retail. And when I say, Accessories, I don't mean external CD-writers, I mean CABLES. Cables rule for sheer profit. Also the Belkin UPS makes good coin.

Go to Future Shop if you live in Canada, and look at the price tag for a computer. Look at the bottom of the price tag, there's a letter/number combination, next to the UPC number. Usually they're something like A122Z0032
It translates to the commission that the sales person will receive for that particular item if sold at full price. The Z(or whatever letter is in the middle) represents the decimal point. In this situation that combo would be $122.00, it's been a while since I stopped by at a Future Shop, but thats how it still was last time I was there.
But ya - you'll see how sad the commission made from a machine can be if there is no extended warranty with it.
