  2. Re:The electric car you want is ready now: on Mercedes To Phase Out Gasoline By 2015 · · Score: 5, Interesting

And those cars are frequently a better solution to the MPG problem, when compared to new hybrid and electric cars. Buying a new car has a huge impact on the environment, as does discarding old cars.

    In order:
    1. Change your driving habits to achieve better mileage out of the car you already own. ($0)
    2. Fix and maintain your existing car to get the best mileage out of it. ($0-500)
    2. Buy a reasonable used car that is more efficient than your current car if your actual fuel savings will pay for the car in a reasonable amount of time. ($500+)
    3. Buy a new car, following the same rules as the above. Unless your current vehicle is a semi that gets 7 MPG on diesel, this probably isn't a realistic cost-effective solution. ($10,000+)

Now, if you want to buy a car anyway, that's fine, but the fallacy of buying a different car to save tons of money on gas is ridiculous. Unless you're buying a $500 beater, chances are low that you'll really save any money.

I think most people are pretty short-sighted when it comes to finances and they think that paying less at each fill-up means they're saving money, even though they may have spent $4,000 on another car and are paying more in auto insurance.

Now, I'll admit that I don't really care about the environmental impact of buying new cars. If you want one, buy one. That just means more cheap used cars for me to play with.

What amuses me is that people who claim to care about the environment would trade in their old reliable Volvos (blatant stereotype ftw) for a new Prius. The environmental effect of that used car happened a good 5-25+ years ago most likely, and the ongoing effects of driving it (if maintained properly) are negligible compared to the production of a single Prius.

Buying used cars is environmentally-friendly and an excellent and effective form of recycling that requires no additional energy. YMPGMV.

While we're banning things that cause the majority of crime (because what the hell is freedom? idk my bff jill), how about black people? Clearly [warning: shitty biased site] they go to jail far more often so therefore they must commit most of the crime so F BLACK PEOPLE. THEY DESERVE TO DIE SO I CAN BE A TINY BIT SAFER.

Who is the GP to say? And aside from that, why accept the violent rantings of somebody filled with hate? People who hate something to the degree demonstrated by the GP aren't capable of thinking logically or rationally about the object of their hate, therefore their opinions are worthless. Are we going to start listening to the KKK for intelligent insight about blacks, jews, asians and hispanics?

    Shooter
    Black Snake Moan
    Pan's Labyrinth
    The Number 23

And Shoot 'em Up if your don't need a plot.

Granted, they don't have any classics, but if it's a classic movie then why would you want a $5 limited rental when you could easily find it at wal-mart or a used DVD store for $5-12 and keep it forever?

I think the point is to make newish, relatively successful movies available to people to watch at home when they wouldn't really want to buy it. A new copy of any of those movies is probably at least $7.50 or as much as $20 at [store].

The cheapest movie theater in my area is $5 a ticket for a matinee. The regular theater chains are $7.50 or so for a matinee and $9-10 for a regular showing. So if two people watch a flexplay DVD at home with some microwaved popcorn at 7 PM they've potentially saved as much as $15 (maybe more) to see a movie that otherwise might not have been worth it.

Then again, as some people noted, redbox is $1/night, so there are even cheaper ways. YMMV.

I would think there's been some research done, but I wouldn't know where to look.

I could reform my original statement and say that I think most native speakers of "romance" languages would handle the Win95 interface easily; they've most likely already been exposed to it (in developed nations at least), and the languages share the same general conventions as english, are written left to right, etc.

Then again, has language hindered windows from becoming hugely pirated in China? Or is there a more widely used alternative in the middle east?

That's a valid point, but unfortunately I think it applies just as much to any modern operating system. If I screw up my install of Mac OS X, I don't think it would be an easy thing to fix it without reinstalling. In fact, I've had to reinstall once or twice. Now, other operating systems *may* be more resilient, but in the end I would say that basically every modern desktop OS has grown far too complicated to restore easily.

The whole effing thing was really dark, and you couldn't even see the stupid alien, except when you did you didn't want to because it was ugly, and it scared the shit out of my girlfriend. Then, on top of the $60 I spent on tickets and concessions to see the retarded movie, I had to buy $400 in roses and chocolate to get my girlfriend to go see another movie with me.

I guarantee that because of my negative experience, nobody else will ever care about or like the movie Alien. I just don't see the point of using all those special effects for the alien when it's so ugly and grotesque. Why they made FOUR sequels and a cross-over series is just beyond me, because nobody could have possibly cared about those either.

(Protip: Alien came out before I was born, and I enjoyed the series. I like Doom too. YMMV, YHBT.)

It wasn't Bush Jr. It wasn't Clinton. It wasn't Bush Sr. [etc]

It's the steady decline of the United States of America over a very long period of time. Both political parties are to blame. "Conservatives" tend to fear-monger and use their power to extend the power of the law in the moral sector, giving increased power to "law enforcement" agencies, and yes, sometimes (often, even) under false or stupid pretenses. "Liberals" tend to increase government programs to further a socialist agenda, which also leads to further increasing the power held by the government, although they tend to loosen "moral" law to give people a heightened sense of "freedom", while regulating things that true freedom requires, like business, property ownership, etc.

My intention is not to come across as an attack on either side. I admit I have a more "conservative" bias personally, but over the last few years my eyes have opened and I now disagree with most moral-law regulation, at least on the federal side. Personally, I believe that the lower you get on the scale (state - county - city), the more room there can and should be for moral-enforcement laws. (I'm just making it clear what my personal POV is in the hopes of making clear any bias with which I wrote the previous paragraph.)
