no need to waste a machine with 300-500mhz, I run a 486/50mhz NAT router here and get no slowdown, but for 100mbit you might want to get something in the low pentium range, like P100 - 200 and a couple of inexpensive 10/100 NICs.
I've been planning on making a machine similar to this for a while, but one issue that concerns me is the noise of a computer as a console. After some research I have pretty much decided on using the obscure Cyrix III from Via, because its cheap (pricewatch $35 / 700mhz), runs on standard hardware (Socket 370), and most importantly it runs cool (Via claims that it doesnt even need a heatsink, I'll slap one on just to be safe, but the point of using the processor is to avoid using a fan). I'd also be looking for the most quiet HD available (theres been some recent stories on/. on quiet HDs) and a quiet PSU (I guess I may need 1 fan for the PSU, thats all I hope to have in the entire case for cooling). This machine should run cool/quiet/powerful enough for use as a console system without annoying me with its noise.

This is a pretty arrogant statement. Just because they work in winamp doesn't mean they aren't corrupted. Winamp is good at playing mp3s that are horribly encoded.
Its all about the funding. I believe the CD sales are OpenBSD's main source of income and if you could download an ISO, CD sales would diminish greatly.
ThinkGeek.com has a cool system where the music when you're on hold is played from an mp3 machine and a webpage is dynamically generated telling what songs are playing and what's up next, etc. I believe that the perl script they wrote to do this is released under the GPL.
Boot passwords are easily circumvented by removing the cmos battery. If they are stealing a laptop to get the information, they can get around a boot password. You're average thug who is going to sell it to the pawn shop on the corner isn't going to be able to get around it though. But he doesn't want your data anyway.

Afraid to associate themselves with this "radical" viewpoint of Linux development perhaps. This is a good comment, although I don't agree with everything in it, it really should be moderated up.
I mean SecurityFocus/BugTraq has been doing full disclosure forever. Why didn't CERT start sooner? And if the k1dd13s want exploits they can get them from SecurityFocus or Packetstorm or something.

Someone registered a slashdot typo (I forget exactly what it is, somehting like salshdot) but they registered it with NameZero, a company that will provide you with a free domain name and I think hosting but they have their little banner frame at the bottom of the screen. So someone actually intended to help you guys out I guess but a side effect of using the namzero name as a redirect is the banner at the bottom. Just thought you should know.
I've actually always wanted a resolution between 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 for my 19inch monitor. 1400x1050 seems to fit the job well, but it would appear my current video board (v3 3000) doesn't support it. Do any current video boards support this mode?
Simplicity is what makes classic games great. Even with color Gameboys, etc. the best game for any portable is Tetris. Games with a simple yet addictive concept are the most enjoyable. Those of you with TI calcs might remember FallDown -- I could play this forever.
I've noticed a trend in processors. Many people are doing fine with the 300-450mhz processors purchased 2 years ago. Do we need all this speed? I know no one who owns more than 800mhz, and most people I know have around 500mhz. Is there even a market for 1GHz+ right now?

The problem as I see it is: 1) Netscape is slow on a P90 no matter what you do 2) Any cipher is going to be processor intensive on a 486 and a P90
