For years, european country implemented smartcards for credit card. You cannot use them to pay without a PIN. but it needs physical presence and special equipement. For years, the US refused to implement them, cause they have no problem with no security in there system. Eh, it's easy to buy, so it's good for business. Now, on person is victim of the classical use of somebody else card number (remember the movie Fletch, with Chavy Chase?). He has his money back, so there is no problem. Now, if law enforcement agency come to see him about that purchase, it is a problem of data quality in government used systems. And now, we have one more illustration of the interest of laws protecting individual citizens about use of data about them. Look at french law "informatique et liberté", which state that people have a right to know what data are stored about them, and to have them corrected in case of error. Of course, there are always provision for exemption in case of national security, and we have a classical problem of all democracies: how can governement protect high values, without respecting them ?
How many.mp2 files do you have laying around? I have some. it is a little less quality than layer 3, but it is in the VCD standard. And, with them, you can have an audio VCD playable on quite every DVD player with a longer playing time that a regular audio cd.
.MP4 is, in my opinion, a vestigal remnant of an old operating system (or sold as such) where filename were in 8+3. Obviously, such a shame of an OS should be forgotten by now.
It is best to try to get the 1024 bit signing key, perhaps by a distributed computing effort. Yes it's a lot of effort. Perhaps, we will have to wait the end of the universe. But knowing MicroSoft security track record, I'll not be to surprised if cryptanalysis reveal weaker than 1024.
On a side note, why don't consummer advocate don't act to render illegit technical interoperability restriction?
Even if I don't disagree with you, I'm surprised that such a "communist" and "anti-american" view has such a high moderation rating. Perhaps US slashdotter are still asleep.
I don't know for sure how it works in UK, but, as a professionnal, if I collect VAT for the government when I sell goods, I'm allowed to deduct VAT when I first bought those goods. As second hand sales are usualy at a lower price that new goods, the net result is the state owns me VAT money, because I sell at a loss. The only matter here is to convince revenu service that the goods are professionnals.
We managed to get through over 20 years of GUI use without the widespread use of toolbars. Anyone know when they first appeared?
don't know, but look at macpaint where you choose tools in a bar (circa 1984). ok, it was on the left, but it really was a bar of tools.
I assert that GUI innovations SHOULD be patentable
ASSERT FAILED!!!
gui innovations could be protected as design, trade marks, and so on. If they become widespread without being protected in court, they'll become public domain, and as such freely usable.
UI design question In eclipse, view have a comportement partly similar to what you describe about adobe palettes (but they are not palettes (perhaps, if there is an unambigous definition of what is a palette)). Is there a risk of patent infrigement from IBM?
Filter comment >= 4 * the browser has very rarely more than 20 to display * there is a lot less noise. Of course, if you are not moderating at the time...
First, 30 days is ways too short for a big company to efficiently evaluate a product.
So, the method: 1.go to yahoo 2.create an email account 3.note it on a post-it 4.go fill the form 5.download the software 6.receive your key on yahoo 7.trash the post-it
after the (short) evaluation period: steps 1. 2. 3. 4. 6 and 7. from previous method -> no download
Some say that the best system is not democracy, but benevolent dictatorship. The risk is then that the dictator is no longer benevolent. In the case of politics, when this happen, dictatorship is all what is left. In the case of the linux kernel, your options are innumerables (Hurd, Bsd, Darwin, Win, OSX,....)

Once the community network become big enough, external connectivity become less and less an issue, because more and more content can be served from inside the network. Do you remember that internet is a mean to communicate inter networks. ? It is not destined to be the one and unique network.

We don't need multihead: users often lack even one.
It's easy : when at a conference, be polite, listen, don't surf.
...you could use a hands free ear piece ...
As there is a cable to the ear piece, I give it a two month lifetime, being careful.
* There still is an external antenna
* the keyboard is still sized for 7 year olds
* I still can not lookup agenda while talking on the phone...
The gadget value is quite high. The usage value is far less than (bluetooth connected) pda + phone.

I was speaking about the book on isbn.nu, not about the dvd on amazon.com
We have a link toward a book without referer encoded in the url.

It's not only informative but interesting too.
and even if they are too much aircraft oriented at time, they are often tragically comic.
1) Read a book review somewhere (presently DDJ)
2) post a critic, including links to web stores
3) earn referer fees
