And when I'm saving some friend $400 on a simple front brake rotor/pad replacement, I implore them to help. To kneel down on the stones with me, and at least see what I'm doing...and turn wrenches if they're game for that. It's easy and very straight-forward work, and anyone should be able to do it themselves.
Household HVAC is also simple. I learned enough in a couple of months as a grunt under a brilliant mechanical engineer working on HVAC that there is no mystery to the why's and how's of it.

Limiting the power output of an amplifier for the purpose of preventing loudspeaker damage is not a trivial thing to do.
In terms of damage, loudspeakers don't care (within reason and obvious mechanical limits) about instantaneous power. They care about long-term heating.
If you just clip the signal, you generate an approximation of a squarewave (which loudspeakers hate): This reduces peak power (which isn't normally a problem), and increases average power (which is always a problem), and reduces cooling, AND it sounds terrible (though some listeners seem to not care). Clipping, therefore, at any stage -- including within software (ala VLC), or even during the recording process -- is a problem.
If you add a simple limiter, you've got the same problems all over again, although with less harmonic distortion: Peak power goes down, but average power stays high. Voice coils cook.
If you add a complicated multiband limiter that understands heating, you might have a shot at solving it, but you're into real money in engineering dollars and DSP parts....over some $.50 laptop speakers.
That all said, companies have been selling and folks have been buying integrated audio systems for well over half a decade. If this is 1949 and I crank up my RCA tube set so I can listen to music in the garden and cook the loudspeaker, that's my fault -- not RCA's fault. The best I can hope is that RCA is willing to sell me a replacement speaker at a reasonable price.
Same with a 1980s Fisher "rack system," or a wall full of modern Krell and Martin Logan gear. Or any random boombox. And, I dare say, a laptop.
It is traditionally the job of the listener to ensure that an audio system is performing within its limitations, and not the job of the audio system to protect itself from the listener.
If I crank VLC up to 120 or 200% or whatever the maximum is, and it starts clipping samples and generating square waves, and I turn the other volume controls up so I can hear that distorted drone over the drone of my hot tub, and something breaks...gosh, I guess I'm going to say that it was my own fault for not hearing the plain and obvious distortion that was occurring, and you know, just turn things down. Just as with any other audio system, big or small.
Back to legal stuff: The Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act does not protect consumers from their own stupidity. If I drop my Jeep down a 4-foot embankment and break a front control arm, that's my own dumb fault -- it's certainly not the manufacturer's fault for failing to ensure that I would be unable to perform such maneuvers in MY Jeep (yes, emphasis: If I owned a Jeep, it would be MINE).
HOWEVER, what MMWA does do is ensure that if the manufacturer suspects that a failure is due to end-user modification, that the the onus is on the manufacturer to prove that this is the case. I can be rock-crawling in my Jeep with its trick aftermarket suspension, and if the engine dies from a broken pushrod, it's the manufacturer's responsibility to prove that it's either not a warranted fault OR that my modifications caused the pushrod to break.
Likewise, the onus is on Dell to prove that some software (such as VLC) caused the failure...or that the speakers aren't warranted to begin with due to signs of abuse. Dismissing a warranty claim out-of-hand because of the software installed on a computer, or the shocks on a Jeep (even IF it might be the case that the software did in fact cause the problem, as VLC might be capable of doing) is illegal in all 50 states.

Time and time again, from Katrina to the Mississippi floods to Sandy to Fukashima, we see the dire effects of building in places that can (and will) flood.
Given our data and our advanced understanding of topography, we already know that they will flood. That we continue to build things and house people in these places is a fault of builders/realtors/bankers/investors/governance/ignorance, not of inadequate band-aids that are mere inches or feet from certain and sudden disaster..
And since we know this, it's cheaper to move the city before the flood, than to attempt to recover/remediate/relocate/mitigate after the flood.
(*: It hadn't flooded there in any meaningful way for 20 years. And it hadn't catastrophically flooded for 80 years before that. Safe bet? Sure seemed like it, but it wasn't. And it is it not a safe bet for anyone else depending on man-made geological improvements to keep them safe from water.)

That said, I clicked the links, I briefly compared these maps OSM/Google of places that I am not familiar with, and I still don't get the point.
Every map has problems. Every modern electronic map has a mechanism in-place for those problems to be fixed. In terms of navigating roadways, the degree of accuracy depends more on the area and the familiarity of the folks working on it than anything else.
Each of Waze, OSM, Google allow users to edit maps with varying degrees of limitation and peer moderation. For the sake of completeness, I've fixed all three of these maps for my hometown...and submitted changes to Garmin for their own map, which got folded into the next release.
If even a small percentage of geeks here spent a bit of time scoping out their usual stomping grounds for even just the most egregious of map errors and fixed them, these maps would all be in fine navigable shape in no time for even the least-traveled of crossroads.
And then, the end-user can pick the best system for their particular application....which is how it's supposed to be, right?
For my own purposes, I use Waze like a religion when driving because it sends data home. And by virtue of sharing this data, it helps me get from A to B faster and with fewer headaches. I sometimes instead use an old standalone Garmin because it is a totally self-contained, offline solution (at least aside from GPS availability) -- something that is likely to work, when other things are failing. (And I keep a paper road map in the car, just in case.)
I don't use Google Maps much at all, because there is no public transportation here and everything else it does overlaps with Waze. And I don't use OSM at all because their dataset is huge, hard to manage and perhaps too-complete, and trying to navigate with it and keep it updated and massage it is frustrating when all I really want to be doing is driving the car and be reminded of my next turn.

Manufacturers wanted folks to be able to use their hardware. And developers, on all manner of operating systems, supported it. And end-users used (and bought!) it.
We've gone backwards over the past decade or two. Things have taken a turn for the worse. It's not a recent turn, but it is a turn nonetheless. Manuals are sparse, if they exist at all. Programming information is nonexistent.
We wouldn't even be having this discussion if Intel hadn't published documentation for the 80386. And I couldn't even hear your cries if it were not for Creative Labs publishing a (oft-emulated) sound card spec. Nor would I have ever played a 3D game in *nix if 3dfx weren't reasonably open with their GLIDE interface (which worked quite well).
Just sayin'. I remember 15 years ago, when things almost-sorta-usually worked, and I was happy about that. And today things still just almost-sorta-usually work, and I'm still happy about it...but that doesn't make it a success.

Each of Waze, OSM, Google allow users to edit maps with varying degrees of limitation and peer moderation. For the sake of completeness, I've fixed all three of these maps for my hometown...and submitted changes to Garmin for their own map, which got folded into the next release.
If even a small percentage of geeks here spent a bit of time scoping out their usual stomping grounds for even just the most egregious of map errors and fixed them, these maps would all be in fine navigable shape in no time for even the least-traveled of crossroads.
And then, the end-user can pick the best system for their particular application....which is how it's supposed to be, right?
For my own purposes, I use Waze like a religion when driving because it sends data home. And by virtue of sharing this data, it helps me get from A to B faster and with fewer headaches. I sometimes instead use an old standalone Garmin because it is a totally self-contained, offline solution (at least aside from GPS availability) -- something that is likely to work, when other things are failing. (And I keep a paper road map in the car, just in case.)
I don't use Google Maps much at all, because there is no public transportation here and everything else it does overlaps with Waze. And I don't use OSM at all because their dataset is huge, hard to manage and perhaps too-complete, and trying to navigate with it and keep it updated and massage it is frustrating when all I really want to be doing is driving the car and be reminded of my next turn.

I got modded -1 on my original posting, apparently because the yungin's here are too proud to remember their heritage.
Maybe you remember things differently than I do, but back in MY day hardware either came with (printed!) documentation, or had such documentation a letter away.
Now, granted: We didn't have massively-parallel graphics subsystems back then. But we did have complicated printers, and those printers came with manuals. Along with other hardware.
Creative Labs and Gravis didn't expect you to just "figure it out" from a binary blob, they published programming manuals.
And this doesn't happen these days. Go ahead and try to find an AT command reference for the modem in a not-so-old, still perfectly-useful laptop: Good luck!.
For a minute or two, even a video card (where "video card" means something other than a dumb framebuffer) had proper manuals available.
Manufacturers wanted folks to be able to use their hardware. And developers, on all manner of operating systems, supported it. And end-users used (and bought!) it.
We've gone backwards over the past decade or two. Things have taken a turn for the worse. It's not a recent turn, but it is a turn nonetheless. Manuals are sparse, if they exist at all. Programming information is nonexistent.
We wouldn't even be having this discussion if Intel hadn't published documentation for the 80386. And I couldn't even hear your cries if it were not for Creative Labs publishing a (oft-emulated) sound card spec. Nor would I have ever played a 3D game in *nix if 3dfx weren't reasonably open with their GLIDE interface (which worked quite well).
Just sayin'. I remember 15 years ago, when things almost-sorta-usually worked, and I was happy about that. And today things still just almost-sorta-usually work, and I'm still happy about it...but that doesn't make it a success.
And this is a problem...how, exactly?
I'm amused that this is still even an issue.
AFAICT, the state of the art of open Linux video drivers hasn't actually advanced, in the relative scheme of things in at least fifteen years: Things still just barely work, doing somewhat new things, at best.
(Oh, sure: The desktop can be stable...sometimes. But I had a stable...sometimes desktop in 1999, too.)
"Early 2014" is rather more vague than "January 1, 2014."
Being pedantic (or the opposite of pedantic, depending on how you view this), a year might have three parts: A beginning, a middle, and an end. (Early, middle, late.)
Since a year's 12 are evenly divisible by three, then we're left with a simple integer: 4.
So that means, to me, that they'd better ship sometime in April at latest.
So if we eat zero nutrients, we'll have perfect vision forever?
