  1. But, the iPhone.... on CERN Announces Collider Startup Delay · · Score: 3, Funny

Judging by the fourteen glowing reviews posted since the beginning of this month I'm sure that the launch of the innovative iPhone technology will surely solve all of CERN's problems.

Or at least let them watch YouTube while waiting for repairs.

  2. FUD-O-Rama on FBI Seeks To Restrict University Student Freedoms · · Score: 5, Informative
The referring article does open with:

US university students will not be able to work late at the campus, travel abroad, show interest in their colleagues' work, have friends outside the United States, engage in independent research, or make extra money without the prior consent of the authorities, according to a set of guidelines given to administrators by the FBI.
It appears that that paragraph is a gross exaggeration of what the FBI is proposing, and indeed further in the article University spokespeople talk about a possible "chilling effect", not about the kind of wholesale assault on freedoms suggested.

I don't like the FBI sticking their nose into other people's business, but let's at least try to represent the problems accurately.

I have no reason to doubt that these lawyers keep their clients within the law, however much they might "game the system." That, after all, is why you hire a lawyer.

The job of the lawyer is to know the law inside out so that they can assist their client. The job of the legislator is to draft laws and regulations that have as few loopholes and weaknesses as possible.

If blame is to be assigned, it goes to the lawmakers.

Honestly though I suspect that most companies paying for this kind of advice are probably fooling themselves. Between the falling U.S. dollar, legal costs, and the inefficiencies associated with training and replacing short term or contract employees they likely aren't saving enough money to make it worthwhile.

Just because it looks cheap doesn't mean it really saves you money.

I've set up a couple Brother all in ones in the last year or so.

Certainly not the fastest machines on the planet, and not the best print quality, but for general use they're cheap to buy, the ink is relatively inexpensive and they seem happy with refill cartidges.

For $100-150 CDN (watch for deals) they offer OK printing, scanning, faxing, as well as being network capable, which makes them perfect for typical home wireless networks.

Personally I've always defaulted for mid range HP printers, but these Brothers sure do offer value.

  15. Re:it's just a hidden tax on New System Detects Calls While Driving · · Score: 1

Actually there has been very little real research on this question*, but one of the very few such studies found that in a highway setting the speed limit which led to the lowest accident rate was usually not the one that was posted.

When measuring real drivers on a real highway over an extended period of time it was found that the optimum speed limit is the speed at which the bulk of cars travel if left to their own devices. Making the limit higher or lower increases accident rates.

Yes, what little actual research exists says that the population of drivers on a highway will find their own speed limit which maximizes the balance of speed and safety.

Picking an arbitrary number like 55 mph actually makes the highway less safe.

    * Cops saying "speed was a factor" and "I've pulled too many dead kids bodies out of wrecked cars" is not "research."

  20. Instant Mashed Repuation! on Online Reputation Is Hard To Do · · Score: 5, Interesting

The problem is that everyone wants to know right now who is trustworthy and who is not.

Building a reputation takes time, often a lot of time. Amazon's reputation is built on several years of good service, good web design, and overwhelmingly positive customer experiences.

Facebook and Digg don't have that track record, and until they do will not enjoy the same level of trust.

Any system designed to give a stamp of approval needs only one mistake to become untrustworthy. Unless it can be nearly 100% foolproof it won't be effective. And given the number of supposedly trustworthy businesses who are anything but, I'd say that rating reputation is not likely to happen soon.
