What kind of nazi university do you teach at? I have *never* taken paper notes in three years and have *never* been asked to put the laptop away. Granted, it is a quiet keyboard, but the concept of technology discrimination is absurd. Furthermore, to ask a student for a tape recording from class that he/she made is illegal at best and harassment at worst. I wouldn't be surprised if you were sued!
The problem is that although your keyboard may be quiet most aren't. I know that as a student I never would have tolerated someone in the classroom making noise that interferes with my ability to learn. I don't care if its a keyboard or someone talking: if you are making noise in the classroom you are being rude and should expect to be asked to leave.
Additionally it is the student recording the class that may be doing something illegal, not the teacher confiscating their tape. Keep in mind that it is not legal to make unauthorized recordings of someone's work be it music, a movie or a lecture. I appreciate that some geeks can't get that through their heads but don't for a minute think you can sue someone for protecting their own rights.
Its nice and all that they are trying to help highschool kids have a future after school but I don't think this is an appropriate choice for training. I have yet to meet anyone "right out of highschool" who has the intellectual maturity (notice I didn't say capacity) to function in a corporate position. This applies especially to positions such as Systems Administration where experience, wisdom and maturity are an absolute necessity.
I know all the shit-hot teenage geeks out there are going to think I'm out of line for saying this (especially when they feel they are ready to take on the world). I'd recommend they go to University and expand their minds a bit even if they feel it is below them or that they wouldn't learn anything. Don't rush into being a wage-slave, kiddies, its not half as much fun as you think it is.
But I got one anyways. The good news is that despite the fact that the floppy drive had been installed I wasn't charged for it. I would consider this something for nothing and celebrate my good fortune but now every time I look at my brand new computer I see the floppy drive staring back at me taunting as if to say "Look at me! Your system is old! OLD! I am eating FPS! I am chewing bandwidth! I AM YOUR LEGACY NIGHTMARE!"
They may have political or ideological leanings, but given as how it's extremely difficult for them to be harmed by anyone effected by their decisions, actual bias is unusual.
Actual bias is unusual? Oh right, just like the Supreme Court decision regarding the legitimacy of the last presidential election.:)
Want to know the fundamental flaw with the American legal system? Elected judges. As long as a judge has to worry about the personal ramifications of their decisions they will not be able to make a truly unbiased decision. A judge cannot risk upsetting those who backed their election campaign which in most cases is probably industry (as it is in all election campaigns).
Canadian judges, on the other hand, are appointed and do not have to kowtow to industry or constituents. They are judges as long as they want to be judges barring a demonstrated incompetence.
No system is perfect but I cannot see how electing a group of "impartial" individuals serves the pursuit of true justice.
Air Canada may have mistreated this guy but quite honestly I wouldn't be comfortable with some guy boarding the aircraft I'm sitting on if he's got all sorts of unidentified gadgets strapped to him and all of them turned on.
Airlines ask that you turn of cell phones, palm pilots and all other electronics while the plane is taking off and landing so why should Mann be any different? If he can't shut that crap off then he should consider taking the train or bus. The rest of us aren't willing to have our safety compromised because someone has electronics connected to their body which they aren't willing to turn off.
Trust me. About 6 months ago I interviewed with one of the larger (if not largest) 'net based porn companies for a sys-admin position. Given that porn seems to be the only industry that makes money on the web I was expecting a decent salary offer and a good working environment. Wrong! Porn companies make money on the web because their costs are low; They hire cheap labour, rent cheap offices etc..
If you want to work as a sys-admin for $24k US out of a dingy warehouse in the bad part of town then I've got the industry for you.

They're on to us! Hide all the evidence that we've been deliberately writing confusing software and in an effort to become their techie masters!
Remember: You have no idea what they are talking about and we never had this conversation.
"Eating FPS"?!
I was being sarcastic. I'll make sure to specify that next time.
Are you completely out of your mind?
I think you could make a fairly good argument to support the affirmative.

because there is not enough free space on that drive (or some such).
Gee, thanks. What next, "Too much free space on drive to create file?"
