  1. Re:I use them on Solid State Drives - Fast, Rugged, and Expensive · · Score: 1

I have been looking at booting a small embedded CPU with a CF card. Is there any particular type you would recommend? It's going on a R/C aircraft so it has to be able to handle lots of vibration and probably a few crashes. I was looking at these but are they overkill? Should I just go with the cheapest thing I can find? I will need to write to them as well. Probably a couple of times every hour. But when they are not in the air a standard HDD can be used.

I love this little program. It makes cleaning up a PC fast and easy. None of this 2+ hours to clean it up. Just remove the stuff that you don't need (Must have some experience with PC's to know what is good and bad). It even can remove the software that hooks into IE.

    I like HiJack this http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html/

I run Win98SE on two older computers. Here's what I suggest:

    1. Hardware firewall. Forget zone alarm and the rest. Just buy a little Linksys or Dlink high speed router/firewall. There cheap.

    2. Virus software. I use Free-AV http://www.free-av.com/

    3. Setup FireFox http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/ and
    Thunderbird http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

    Don't worry about much.

And when I need to I use HiJackThis to remove the odd piece of spyware that is installed.

I noticed a lot of spyware comes from Kazaa and other P2P networks. If your just web browsing the previous precautions should be enough. P2P is a completely different story!

Sony will have to sell their Blu-Ray really cheap to beat out MS. Prices fall fast when companies can sell lots of their products. If you can buy an HD DVD burner really cheap you can bet you can get a player for your TV for not much more....

Considering Xbox is cheap the Xbox 2 is probably going to be cheap too. The PS3 might have to follow suit. Then the Consoles will be the decieding factor in what format win's on peoples TV's

  7. Has anyone else tried it? on Unofficial Windows98SE Patch · · Score: 5, Informative

I have two Win98SE machines. I haven't needed to upgrade them. They are pretty stable so I don't need W2K or XP. 98Se works just fine for me.

Anyway I just installed the patch on my machine. The machine's preformace increased A LOT! Windows boot faster and preformance in general was very SNAPPY. Why can't every OS be like that? It seems to be a bunch of patches plus a few tweaks! :).

After installing it of course it changed my background and all the colors to W2K theme. Not that I mind but I was rather suprised that it didn't ask me or anything like that. My icon's stayed the old Win98 ones until I went into my properties for display settings. Under Icon's it showed all the new ones. So I click on "use large icons" and then they all changed to the new W2K icons. I hate large icon's so I unchecked it and the icon's still stayed W2K theme.

I kind of like it. I am hoping to try out the USB Mass storage device option. Flash cards are so much fun. Under newer OS's I don't have to do anything. Just plug em in. Under 98SE I have usally had to install the drivers.

Oh. I have an Athlon 750Mhz with 256MB of ram. Win98 just screams with this patch!

Now to try it on a an old K6-2 400 /w 128MB ram that has been running rather sluggish lately.

If anyone wants KISS then they should use 98SE on their new machine. It's fast, simple, not confusing, has industry support and everyone knows how to use it.

If your smart you will put it behind a firewall and then add some simple FREE AV software (www.free-av.com) works great for me. It can do everything I need like email, word processing, some games (newer ones barely work), surfing the internet. The only problem is computer games. But hey using an Xbox is a whole lot cheaper than getting a new Athlon 64 /w a $400+ video card. Plus everyone knows how to use it.

  12. Average age of downloaders??? on Canadian Minister Promises to Fix Copyright Law · · Score: 2, Interesting

Does anyone know the average age of the downloaders? Are there any studies out there?

I might be wrong but I think people who make these laws are going to be in for a ruff ride when it comes to enforcement. They might have to put a lot of minors in jail.

First off I know a lot of youth (14-18 years old) and I visit some web forums for various topics. Now what suprises me is the age of a lot of the people on them. There are a lot of youth. They don't have money, but they have time and access to a computer. They spend a great deal of time on MSN (Hardly any of them have heard of ICQ) chatting, web forums and guess what downloading music.

I also propose that these Music exec's who complain about copyright infrigement should check under their own noses. Are their kids or grandkids engaging in this activity? I can almost certianly say so. Who isn't that is under the age of 25-20 and has a net connection?

What is the average age of a music sharer? I propose that a 80% of the file sharing is done by people under the age of 30 and that 40% or more occurs with people who are under 18 years of age. Especially in Canada where broadband has been around for a long time (6 years where I live).

The other problem with these laws and stuff is that music sharing has been going on for a long time. I was in high school when I was first exposed to it all. I remember what the first version of Internet Explorer looks like. Windows 95 had just come out! Whoo! At the time everyone who was in Visual Communications or who knew about comptuers was into downloading music and making MP3's! This was over 7 years ago! It's been going on a long time. It's embeded into our culture all ready. It's almost too late to change the laws now.

Back when this all started my friends where into Warez as well. I don't know what else to call it. But they downloaded software just for the sake of downloading it. A friend of mine had over 200 applications. Some like lightwave, windows, office, and oddles of games. Probably worth MILLIONS OF DOLLARS if bought retail. He probably had over 20 burned CD's at the time (7 years ago). I don't remember how many MP3 CD's he had but I know it was over 11. When your young you have the time to download all sorts of stuff and learn how computers ect. work.

The other problem is ignorance. Parents have no idea what their kids are doing on their computers. If they can hardly run Word and fight with their printers and don't understand email how can they understand what P2P is or how it works? Let alone know enough to enforce any rules. Removing young people from a computer with a net connection can be very challenging.

I hope someone does a study on the age of the average downloader/uploader. I am sure some interesting stats would come out.

When I ping his computer my ping packet goes to the other side of the continent and back taking about 10 hops. Another friend of mine has a cable modem too. When I ping him I go through 5 hops to get to his computer and my packet stays in Edmonton. Why can't the different large ISP's have a shared connection in Edmonton? I am sure that it would be a lot faster if my packet's stayed in Edmonton instead of running to Toronto and back(Several 1000KM).
