I guess I had hoped for more from Jackson after his near total success with LOTR. Maybe I was hoping for him to embark on something new and original, instead of a rehash of what's been done. Still, it appears that the story would be told in the 1930's, rather than modern times like was done w. the 1970's version of KK. That will make for a more interesting picture, and allow the characters to display more wide eyed amazement than modern characters could. I hope Jackson succeeds and blows away the critics yet again, but I was hoping for something fresher.
HA!! That's THE FUNNY!!!
College for me was early 90's, so $20 bought beer/pizza, or beer/laundry, or pizza/laundry, for one week. The economics back then were so simple, didn't know how good I had it!:)
$20 a month was serious money. That's one week of clean laundry and GOOD pizza on Sunday night (and not the cheap stuff). Back then, $20 a month would have bought a lot of personal ethics. Can't say as I blame them.
1. LEARN EVERYTHING about PC's. EVERYTHING!!! Learn to program! There's this thing called the internet, get on it.
2. Save your money!!! Don't waste it on crap (followed by a definition of what crap is/was).
3. Buy these..Netacape, AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo, Ebay. Sell them on these dates.
4. Dude....lay off the soda and the chocolate, hit the gym.
5. Football is not important, but it might actually get you laid.
6. Tell your dad how he will die and when, and what his life choices will be and the consequences of them. MAYBE he'll decide to turn his life around. Bring photos if need be.
1. Selection. I live 20 minutes from Barnes and Noble, but, more often then not, they don't have the book I want. It's worth it to me to order from Amazon and save myself the trip.
2. People. I hate crowds. Especially at Xmas time. Spending a few extra dollars for shipping, and if needed, taxes, is worth it to me. Otherwise, I'm pissed off all day long.
3. Selection. The stuff I want is usually not stocked locally here in Iowa (wish we had a Fry's or equivalent). My only option is online. That kind of convenience is worth a little extra coin.
Someone should write a song about this. Man, too bad the Beatles broke up, they'd be perfect!
Do you still have skills?

Despite your legendary status as a cult hero within the geek community, we all know that to remain viable, we must all remain up to date on latest/greatest trends, tools, skills, terminology, etc. Let's be honest, we gain skill and knowledge re: computers by using/interfacing/reading about them. After your long absence from the computer world, how viable do you imagine yourself being? Admittedly, your name alone will open a lot of doors, but if your skills don't keep the door open, you may find yourself back outside. How have you kept current, and how do you plan to get yourself back up to speed with changes that have occured since you were forced offline?
Quote from article: "Also, the networks would be unable to give the type of detailed explanations as to why voters voted the way they did this time around. For example, according to TV network analysts working the election, the networks wouldn't be able to tell viewers why particular demographic groups voted for specific candidates nor the issues that they considered most or least important when voting. "
So, what this means is that people were able to go late to the polls, and cast a vote free from the influence of network prognostication. They were able to cast a vote that they thought was right, free from the spectre of "throwing a vote" as the election had already been "called" by *INSERT NETWORK NAME HERE*. Boo Hoo to the networks. Wow...why the hell is this a bad thing???
Up until the 1960's, most US citizens were able to vote just fine, all by themselves, without the need for knowing why *INSERT DEMOGRAPHIC HERE* people voted for *INSERT CANDIDATE NAME HERE*. Why does it need to be different today? There's already enough blather on TV, if we could eliminate it from just one night every 4 years....oh man, that'd be sweet!:)
Of course, I won't know because I'll be watching something that is entertaining, rather than a farce, on my TiVo!!!:)

Common sense stuff here, but.....
1. Molten lead is hot, very hot. ADULT use only.
2. Molten lead puts off poisonous fumes (from the lead, and from impurities in the lead). Melt lead only in a well ventilated area (outside), and keep the kids away from it.
3. Above all, let the kids dictate the overall design of their cars. Suggest all you want, but if they want to build the coolest looking, slowest car around, let them. It's their race, not yours, and they need to be the ones who enjoy it for their own reasons.
Sorry chief...white, 31, wife, 2 kids, middle America. Wrote that sitting at my desk in corporate land, and needed to ghetto it up a bit (personal sanity thing). Sorry that I can't be 3l33t like yo bad 'sef. Peace out smack dog and all that...I gots to go drive my minivan to day care to pick up mah shorties now.
My Tivo is very quiet, and I only notice it when the living room is shut down for the night. Even then, hardly a whisper. I sleep in a room w. a humidifier which is much louder.
Also, as long as I am here..PVR's RULE!!! They totally, 100% change the way you watch TV. Yes, the hardware is important, but the monthly fee that allows the unit to download programming data AND (this is the important part) search it at will is where the PVR's really shine. If Modern Marvels conflicts with Buffy, no sweat, click a button and record the show when it is shown again at 3AM. I totally love it and recommend a PVR to anyone who watches TV. End of evangalism!
It puts into words my own feelings about MS that I have not been able to articulate so eloquently. I like Windows 2000, it works and works well (for me). I totally agree that the marketing dweebs will ruin MS's dominance, and drive users to Linux. Linux is still not ready for everyone's PC.....but the day is coming, maybe in Red Hat 10 or Mandrake 11....MS needs to wake up and realize that we don't like being spied on.
"Many natural births done to date have resulted in abnormalities that manifested themselves later in the person's life."
Agreed. But, natural births are usually births that occur without massive intervention of medical or other science (2 cells merge, "nature" takes over, 9 months later, the results are usually favorable).
"Well, an animal can be put down pretty quickly, and the ethics behind so are hotly contested by PETA." From my perspective, PETA is a group of flakes (that's my opinion only, let's not debate that here.) If I have too choose between ending the life on a cloned animal that is "abnormal" and the life of a cloned human that is "abnormal", I can choose to end the animal's life with little or no moral regrets, not so with a cloned human. It's a personal ethical dilemma that each person has to decide for themselves. PETA members obviously possess a different set of ethics than I.
"Bottom line, there is too much we don't know about natural reproduction to rush to create a new human for the purposes of going forth and multiplying only. This is not responsible or ethical human behaviour."
Again, agreed. The amount of information that we don't know about the human bodies workings, the brain, reproduction, DNA, the Genome...it's staggering how ignorant we are. The natural way of creating life is working too well for most of us, and is a damned sight more fun then the petri dish method. Yes, the science behind human cloning is not sound...and I think this discussion has forced me to develop a view against human cloning, which I did not previously possess.
Most cloning experiments done to date have resulted in abnormalities that manifested themselves later in the cloned animals life. Well, an animal can be put down pretty quickly, and the ethics behind doing so are mostly cut and dried. Not so with a human life, cloned or otherwise. If there is a life threatening condition down the road, the cloned person may have to endure a lot of pain and suffering that would have been avoided had they been a normal conception and birth.
Bottom line, there is too much we don't know about cloning to rush to create a cloned human for the purposes of prestige only. This is not responsible or ethical science.
Nationwide user base, supporting network, desktop, mainframe apps. 1 Help Desk tech per approx. 500 users (20 techs, 10000 total users). I take 40-50 calls per 8 hour shift (lots of dinkass password issues), utilize a personal first call resolution of around 70%. I now despise talking on the phone, but it beats roofing!
Years ago, when you hosted SNL, you participated in the now classis Trekkie sketch (actually, one of my all time favorite SNL sketches).
Was that sketch a catharsis for you, a means of finally casting off some chains and letting the world know what you think and feel, or was it just a sketch? I am not dissing you, your work, or Trek fans, but, let's be honest here, some people do need to, in your words, "Get a life!". Do you/did you feel that way, or was it just an act? Come on, be honest.....:)
Burning some karma this AM.
1. HARUMPH!!! Why, who the hell do you think you are, coming in here asking questions. You need to do your own research, this is not the place for these kind of questions! These kids today, coming in here, thinking that I'll do their job for them, why when I was a boy...
2. Like, oh my god, you are using Windows/Exchange/MS something, like, oh my god, don't you KNOW that Linux is just better, because it's like, free or something like it, but it's just like better. So you should use Linux, like, OK?
3. Wow, imagine TCO on a beowulf cluster of these things!
4. You're stupid cuz I know more then you, yeah, so your stupid, stupid.
Did I miss any?:)
Does anyone know if running DC to examine NEAR objects is feasible/practical/needed? This would be to assist researchers with tracking of "doomsday" asteroids that have a chance of hitting Earth. I know that there are not enough people actively watching the sky right now, and we are not currently prepared to engage an asteroid. Still, if we knew one was coming, steps maybe could be taken. Or we could argue about it.
Bottom line, would DC to track and predict paths of NEAR's be of any practical use, or not?

Then let them tear Jeff Goldblum to pieces. Yeah, that'd be cool.

Basically, throws out the 2nd amendment and updates it, allowing reasonable people to own reasonable weaponry. Worth a read.
