Military research and spending is often times the catalyst that drives innovation. If it takes the DoD to FINALLY create a means of providing hydrogen power to vehicles, I see it as a good thing. New tech, if it works, ALWAYS trickles down to the civilian world.
This is one of those damned interventions I've read about. GET AWAY FROM ME...I can handle it...it's not a problem, I don't want to stop...NOOOOO GIVE IT BACK...GIVE US BACK OUR PRECIOUS SODA...it's ours and......WE....wants it!!!!!!!
Gut reaction here says that someone, somewhere, would setup some means of remotely reading an RFID tag, hacking whatever PW/encryption is on it, and draining bank accounts. I could see it for small transactions, tolls, fast food, gas, etc. but would be leary about this sort of thing for all financial transactions.
What matters is an accurate count. Why oh why is this so difficult? Press a button, tally a vote. Next voter please. Why is this even still being discussed??? Maybe I'm dense, but I just don't get it.
1. Lightsabers
2. My flying car dammit!
3. Holodeck (tho, once perfected and available to all, human advancement would GRIND to a halt!)
4. Teleporter, beam me anywhere!
Why is electronic voting so tough??? Go in, cast a vote, verify a vote, print the result on a strip of paper, hell, two strips of paper and move on. What's the holdup here??? I don't get it.
Well, space can easily be made by dumping the steaming turd that The Family Circus is. Geesh, shouldn't those kids have grown up by now, got addicted, rehabed, and on with their lives????
Since Apollo, we've done little visionary work in exploring our solar system. Sure, probes and landers and telescopes have been launched, some quite successful, some dismal failures. But, in most cases, the human element has been missing. There has been no bold adventurer out there, blazing a trail across the cosmos for others to follow. Humankind today has come to realize that Buck Rogers in not just a generation away, and that it will be centuries, if ever, that man is able to travel to and explore other worlds at will as is the case with so much sci fi.
Like Cringley posited the other day, there is no invention, rather, just innovation. New technologies and frontiers are not being pushed today like they were in the 30's-60's, and we've allowed space exploration to stagnate under the weight of governmental bureacracy.
People are realizing that sci fi IS fantasy, and are using the pure escapism of fantasy to, well, escape into a world where right and wrong and reality and fantasy can be so much more easily defined.
Here's the thing that will kill Linux on the desktop, manual configuration of CFG/TXT/Other files. Windows has, for years, mostly been able to run FAIRLY well with all graphical configuration tools. Yes, some esoteric settings do require reg hacks or cfg/ini file edits, but most things are handled through a very user friendly GUI. When I've installed Linux, inevitably, I have to go to a command prompt and edit/gzip/untar/move/etc. something from there. Installation of Java, mouse, GeForce drivers, all require manual intervention, Windows just drops me a WISE package and off I go.
Make Linux updates/installs as easy as Windows, and theirs a chance. Until such time, Desktop Linux will exist solely as a curiosity.
Listen to me carefully. You are living a dream. The people stumbling through that tourist trap (and a poor one at that) have no interest in computing, or learning for that matter. Your users will consist of a bunch of bratty teenagers and their drunken parents. Better commit your resources to a local community college where users might actually come to learn, otherwise, Arnold's Park is NOT the place for this. MAYBE Spencer, but not AP.
Bush declared early on that he would not be "doing" email as President, mostly to avoid ANY messages that would or could be construed as incriminating to himself or others.
Chances are, he won't be reading what you send anyway. Frankly, I suspect the concept of "mail your representative/elected official" is largely a thing of the past. Lobbyist's and big politcal money have largely ended any sort of grassroots effect.
Digital photos of every step of the packing process, up too and including the drop off at the AUTHORIZED shipping center. Store these pics on a PC DIFFERENT than the one you are shipping.
This way, if damage occurs, you are able to make a reasonable case for yourself that yes, you did pack the PC in a decent manner, and can prove it. Also, pictures of the box/PC as it was when you received it (preferably BEFORE the delivery driver leaves, able to make a claim IMMEDIATELY upon receipt). Documentation will be your friend. And spring for the insurance.
Actually, I have heard that the majority of Hoover Dam's output is sent to LA, and not Vegas. Vegas gets its power the old fashioned way, fossil fuels.
In cold weather, diesel engines need to be kept warm, or they won't start again until spring. So, part of the reason they are never shut off is so that the truck can continue running that winter.
I suspect that most modern semi/long haul rigs are fairly efficient beasts anyway. A better effort would be directed at cleaning up the emissions from short haul/local trucks. Get behind a dump truck at a stop light sometime, watch the black cloud that it belches out as it gets under way. Multiply that time 1000+ stoplights and you'll see how much pollutuon those trucks pump out.
1. I record shows for the kids and History/Discovery channel stuff for myself. A few network shows here and there, and once in awhile, a little T&A off the cable channels. Naughty, but not really embarassing. If this gets "reported" I can live with it. However, it's broken down by zip code, so I don't have many concerns. Plus, if it shows that I really like well thought out, witty commercials (there are some out there), basically advertainment and not mindless ads, and this creates better advertainment for me, is this not a good thing?
2. TiVo could become more relevant that Neilsen data. Imagine, they can break down for networks what was recorded vs. what was actually watched, when it was watched, and what commercials were watched while viewing. Combine this with the fact (here's where TiVo shareholder's laugh with glee) that I will PAY THEM to LET THEM track this data, and be happy to do so, it's a win win for the company and the consumer.
TiVo truly does put one in control of their viewing. If they want to gather a little data, virtually anonymously, fine by me.
That one day, he does plan to give away most of his billions. If a portion of that is in software, so be it. I tend to view this as a good thing, if it brings computing, be it Windows based or not, to someone who can benefit from it in some way, then it's probably good.
I know my life, and the lives of most Slashdotters, have been significantly impacted by the existance of Windows/MS. And, ignoring the late night BSOD's, honestly, how "miserable" is your life because of MS? Can you honestly say that MS products and their impact has had no positive effect on your life and career?
Love MS or hate MS, you cannot deny the profound changes they have brought to PC's and computing everywhere.
I have got to second this!! The Tivo box (hardware) is great, no complaints. But, where the whole idea really shines is in the software/UI/program guide marraige. The way TiVo allows me to search for shows, select alt. viewing times, specify recording quality, the whole package, really and truly makes it worth the $13 a month for the service. Home rolled is nice and all, but for the time and money you will expend, you will not grow a TiVo clone..not even close. Do yourself the favor, buy a TiVo, check it out...if I am wrong, take it back and get your money back, One of the best devices I ever bought!!
Iraq has bigger problems then internet access right now. Supplying food, water, and safe waste disposal to all citizens is of greater importance than internet access.
Starting a working, democratic government is more important than internet access.
Punishing the thugs who helped keep the country under Hussein's thumb is more important than internet access.
Ensuring the life and liberty of all Iraqi's is more imporatant than internet access.
Once all these have been put into place AND guaranteed against the oppressive forces that are at work in the world, especialy the Arab world, come talk to me about internet in Iraq. Until then, the internet is a luxury that the average Iraqi doesn't NEED right now.

The answer is yes, or maybe no.
Call me a complainer, but I really don't like the Slashdot postings that end with such vague questions.
