  1. First Ammendment infringement, or is it? on FTC Shuts Down 'Pop-Up Trapping' Sites · · Score: 1

These sites are set up to take advantage of typos, but they do it in an advanced way, which causes your browser to work in an atypical way. Since there is also porn involved, I can see how this would be a problem. For instance, in a school setting, where bringing up porn can cause embarrassment and possible disciplinary action from instructors.

Plus, using the internet costs money, so commandeering a person's system should be illegal. There is already a law banning telemarketing from cell phones. To me, it seems like the same thing.

If the sites just had irrelevant content and didn't take control of the browser, I don't think the government could touch him, but since his programming works in an almost virus-like manner, his sites should be shut down.

I tried this program, and i hate it. The range is only about 6' unless you have an IR booster. And it eats batteies like crazy.

  3. Constitutionality on Hackers are 'Terrorists' Under Ashcroft's New Act · · Score: 1

Look, passing a reactionary law is one thing, getting it to stand up to the scrutiny of the Supreme Court is another. In the short term, it could/will violate people's rights, and for the few that are unlucky enough to be arrested, a tremendous amount of time. Potentially, this could set the stage for dozens of new Dmitry/Kevin-escque t-shirts to be produced.

The point is, we still have our constitution despite the best efforts of lawmakers.

  4. How long 'till they sell out on Why Google Rocks And An IPO · · Score: 1

Look at everyone's old favorite, MetaCrawler. They were innovative, and extremely efficient, then they sold out and now the tool is about as worthless as any of the other individuals it crawled. Few products or services have withstood the buyout, WinAmp and ICQ come to mind. Some that I recall with less enthusiasm are Lotus 123 (which just sort of died, rather than being imroved to death), and Napster. With any luck, if they do sell out, it will be to Yahoo! I mean, look how much better they made GeoCities.

  5. Real IRA and other terrorist groups on More News And Links On Yesterday's Terrorist Attack · · Score: 1

I wonder if the backlash from these incidents will fall onto the backs of all terrorist groups in the world. Will Britain and Ireland use this an excuse to end diplomacy with the Real IRA? Will the UN back an assault on Iraq to remove Saddam? Bin Laden's days are surely numbered. I wonder if the soldier who actually kills/captures him will get to collect the $2,000,000 dollar bounty. On that same note, will the bounty be increased? This could be the tip of the iceberg for a potentially bloody decade.

  6. Re:Echelon? on More News And Links On Yesterday's Terrorist Attack · · Score: 1

The NSA has systems in place which grab every bit of data in the air that they can. This has been going on for decades. The real trick will be sorting the pertinant info from the millions of other cell phone bandwidth packets.

  7. Las Vegas Security on U.S. Attack -- More Updates · · Score: 2, Informative

So far, Nellis AFB is on Delta Security Level (as are all military bases, by now, I'm sure) and the Hoover Dam is closed to traffic. People are being diverted to Laughlin by US 95. The Meadows Mall, Stratosphere Tower and Convention Center are also closed. School is still in session, as well as UNLV.

US currency is trading at 1.4759 USD to 1 GBP, according to Yahoo! Finance.
