Check out Microway.
You can pick up a 533 Mhz Alpha system for $1995.
It comes with everything except a monitor.
Hrm... 64-bit cpu w/ 2mb cache system for under 2 grand. Not to shabby.
I don't think it's a "ploy". And if it is, it's rather poor. Say you did download Red Hat 7 and did not register. There are tons of places like slashot where you can get news like this. Also, theres irc, usenet, etc. You can still sign up for mailing lists. If all that fails, you can always point your browser to http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/
every so often. Updates like these are on that page, including this one. And its pretty easy to get to from their front page. In fact, I didnt even know about it untill I started typing this!
Be sure that when you read the second article, you check out the link that the Eastside Journal has to "Ooh La La, Intimate Apparel".
Mmm... nanotechnology and tacky lingerie.
Shall we?
I summitted this article yesterday, before
the original.
Then I see it was rejected. OK, fine.
Then about 2 hours later I see the same article that I got rejected on got posted.
Then, I mention this in the articles discussion, and get flamed on.
Then I come to/. the next day to find that the aritcle had been posted again.
*Slap*
On top of all that the duplicate article has a title that is not even accurate!
I don't think the Slashdot community needs to be told the benefits of reverse engineering. But, what I do think people need to know is how to put their ideas into action and get results. Does the public have what it takes to make a turn-around and put the courts on our side? Voting is just a start. These companies that we all are so mad at for limiting our rights had the motivation to get things done. The pitched, they lobbied, they did what it took. They saw possibility of a short-term financial gain and seized it. I believe that you don't need a fancy suit and a wad of cash to have your way. It's time for all the people on irc, Usenet,/., and all the techs, geeks, engineers etc. to be heard.
It's obvious that we do not have the voice like other groups do when it comes to getting our ideas across to our legislature. Does anyone know why? Are we that small a group? Of the people I've meet some have been disenchanted with the system and believe it can't help them no matter what. Others think that a more open environment somehow contradicts our capitalist society. Still, others simply don't care; as long as they get their paycheck, everything is fine. How can we try to change these attitudes?
They are a business. And they do have to make money.
But you can make alot of moeny from free software.
Its not like they're NOT going to sell macos just because its Free. I mean, if software is really good I'll give money. I've given money to the FSF but Ive never given money Ive made to Microsoft. (For software, I did buy the Itellimouse. ) And its no secret that you could always build a pc comperable in performance to a mac for cheeper. Thats not always an issue for some consumers, but it is for me. You didnt even mention the periphials. As for hackers, I think hacking the UI would be great. One thing that a Free Mac OS wont give apple the power to do is make you buy a new OS after a major hardware upgrade. Boo-hoo.
Point is, saying a company is morally wrong for trying to make a buck off software is... well... wrong.
Well, i am not saying anyone is moral or not, so I'll stay away from that. But what does Free software have to do with making or not making a buck?
I didnt say anyone was moral or immoral. I am saying Apple can still make money off GPLing software. However, I dont understand the analogies of giving away food or starving. Apple sells MacOS with evey machine, right? Of course if it were GPL it probably would be a better Mac OS.
Of course I am not an immoral person because I haven't given all my food away to the homeless and starved in their place!
Im simply saying the analogy dosent apply here. In your situation some must starve. What is so absurd about demanding the best quality software.
Apple wouldnt just roll over and die.
Ive seen these type of posts on slashdot before.
"If you like Free Software so much, why dont you quit your job?" This type of commant always seems to get moded up also.
I find this disturbing since Free Software is not about giving away money, quiting jobs, "living in a dream world", or never making a living from writing software. This very forum runs on GPL'ed code! Well that's not how the world works
And it will never work that way with that attitude.
I may not be a "techie", but i dont dl porn all day on my shiny new mac from the newest "wicked cool" hotline server. but then, I guess that makes me not l33t like your self. *sign*, back to my console.
(macs dont really suck, didnt think anyone would actually reply to my bait, sorry)
You're absolutely right. But, what is the chance of QDR SDRAM?
--
I guess this means that Intel will now use DDR SRAM for upcomming chipsets. And then possibly QDR SRAM
*drool*
--
Or is that only for journaling filesystems?
or do I not know what I'm talking about?

I knew Slashdot was popular but, wow. About how many hits does slashdot get a day? or an hour? hehe.
I may not be a "techie", but i dont dl porn all day on my shiny new mac from the newest "wicked cool" hotline server. but then, I guess that makes me not l33t like your self. *sign*, back to my console.

the big deal is that macs suck
How much does this cost? Because Sony has something like this but its expensive.
Cool...
I hope my linux box is "infected".
I also hope the bank of new york gets attacked. I really cant stand those bastards.
How do you pronounce that word? "eigenstates"
Thanks!
So we should let them do what they want?
Sorry, they still have rules to obey, promises or not.
