I've also heard that in the next update they are recommending that we remove any cables connecting our computers to the internet.
Their final security update will be a patch which automatically powers the computer down before you can boot into Windows... this would be the ultimate in security except that we won't be able to download it because we've already removed all cables connecting us to the internet.
Did NetPD go through the trouble of ensuring that these files were what they claimed to be? What's to say that the file 'Metallica-Black.mp3' isn't my biology assignment? Or maybe it's just a tape of me singing in the shower?
Is it illegal to have a file that has a title that sounds like a song? Shouldn't they have to make sure that this file is what it appears to be? That would take a long time given the number of Metallica songs that are out there and the thousands of file sizes that are available for these songs (based on combinations of frequency, bitrate and ripping software).
Just some thoughts...off to see if www.NetPDSucks.com is registered yet.
It appears that http://go.com and all the affiliates (espn, abc, etc.) have already changed from the old go.com logo. The new one is pretty uninspired.
It really bugs me, this unrealistic portrayal of computers in movies. It's just colourless, and lacking in vision. The closest I ever found to real programming, for instance, was the girl using Jurassic Park Unix (in the like-named movie).
Actually the correct term for 'Jurassic Park Unix' is Irix which is the standard SGI operating system. The computer in Jurassic Park is definitely an SGI. Flying around your file system is actually possible with the software that came with our SGI Indigo2 workstations. I think it is called 'File Flyer' but I'm not 100% sure.
What is the proper etiquette for registering your family name with a TLD?
I don't believe there is any etiquette involved with this procedure but a company called http://www.mailbank.com has registered almost all last names of British origin as dot net.
They sell email addresses and subdomains. Myself and several friends have tried to register domains only to find them all taken by Mailbank:(
The page looked like that to me also so I decided to fire up IE... well it's more like click and hope that it doesn't crash my machine:) Not surprisingly the page looked just fine. It's nice to know that these people don't have the brains to make their web pages compliant for all browsers.
On a side note I've had IE running for almost five minutes now and my machine hasn't crashed, although memory usage increased alot.
Getting one email from someone like this is enough for me to stop what I am doing, spend the next 30 minutes finding out what ISP he used to send out his garbage, and complain to the ISPs in question. A deja.com search is also not uncommon for me.
I used to spend alot of time tracking down the spammers but know I find that using http://spamcop.net really helps. It gets the true source of the email and even formats a message to be sent to the correct people. You can then choose who you want your message to be sent to.
If you like the service they'll sell you an email address (yourname@spamcop.net) that is filtered and forwarded to you.
Go to http://xbox.ign.com/news/18793.html and you can see some movies also :)
These have been around for a few weeks now actually.

...and I'm talking with my lawyers now to decide how to pursue all those computer users out there that are using sweaty mice.

*sigh* I wish I had a patent on filing patents so that I could stop dumb patents like this from being filed.
I don't know who came up with the patenting idea but I don't think they intended for it to be used to patent even the most basic concepts.

Google is also working toward generating money through advertising, but does not plan to run banner advertisements.
"It's going to be highly targeted text ads that are fast-loading and not a distraction," Brin said. "It will be relevant to searches."
They are not planning banner ads at the moment but they are planning on adding advertising. Advertising is what brings us these sites.

I'd guess it's because /. has been down for most of the day but so far no one seems to have asked the two most common questions:
:)
1) Can they run Linux?
2) Can we turn them into a Beowulf cluster?
Hmmm... would that be animal abuse?
