If they support H.264, which was their previous position, open source people will cry foul.
If they support WebM, fans of H.264 will whine about the loss of quality.
If they support both, HTML 5 video tag will be standardize sometime in 2027, when all of H.264's patents run out, invoking the wrath the open source Flash-hating population.
Unguessable insta-death is also extremely irksome. The original Alone in the Dark suffered from it in a bad way. Hey, I'm in a scary house. I have to go around opening doors... Woops, opening that door immediately drops me to a cutscene of my dying horribly, with no possible clues by which I could have inferred that it was different than any other door. I guess it is time to save-and-check my way around the entire damn place...
IMHO if you give players choices, it's best you make the consequence of said choices clear at the start so the player can make an informed decision.
Sure it isn't realistic, but it's a game, it's escapism.
If I wanted to get screwed over due to no fault of my own, I can get plenty of that in RL.
I get the impression Apple works under the rule of "you control the network, we control the phone".
My local operator loves to add "customizations" to their handsets.
"Customizations" like placing their hideous logo and marketing slogans everywhere they can, replacing the startup and shutdown screen with what can for most practical purposes be considered ads - all of which clashes with and ruin the nice interface the phone makers created.
As well as permanently attaching their "value added service" to the right soft-button on my old dumb phone, which is conveniently above the frequently used "cancel" button.
You have no idea how happy I was when my iPhone 4 came effective customization free. No logo, ads, promotions for their services nor poorly made programs of theirs.
The only thing indicating the network I'm on is the networks indicater in the top left of the screen, and the cellphone data setting deep in the setting applet.
I also see getting my OS up dates directly from Apple, which are made avaliable to us immediately when ready as a good thing.
LOL who knew Apple's control freak tendencies and heavy handedness could work to the benefits of us customers.
I kind of agree. Call it "moving with the times" if you may.
It's kind of like maths and calculators. No one does division by hand any more if they can help it, and for most part, majority of the time you can get by even if you have forgotten how to do "long division" by hand. What is important is that you understand WHAT is division. There are many ways to do division, either by hand or via computing devices, doesn't really matter how you do it as long as you understand what the heck it is you are doing.
In the words of Einstein, "Never memorize what you can look up in books."
And spelling is pure rote memory with no analytical component.
After a couple of crashes+restarts from the upgrade, I redownloaded, uninstalled followed by fresh re-install.
I even upgraded my video drivers - the crashes I have been getting involves my screen just totally freezing (mouse cursor still works though; just can't click anything), similar to the ones I get during WoW when I use to play it.
Maybe I will reinstall in a week or so, see if anything changes.
First I want to say I love the first version of MSE.
Light weight, no nagging, and for most part just stays out of the way.
The new version seems more of the same, except it's been freezing my PC since I upgraded yesterday. I currently have it un-installed to see it's the problem, and so far my PC is rock solid like it has always been.
Any ideas or suggestions? I'm "flying blind" right now.
PS: don't ask me to install Linux (it seems more trouble than it's worth half the time, no offence) or get a mac (I'm broke)
Glad that we have HTML5, it's not as mature as flash but it's getting there.
HTML5 that has no chance of dying all of a sudden because it's parent company got bought out and the it's new owners decides to drop it.
And suddenly Steve Jobs looks like a genius again.
Can you imagined if Flash was popular on the iPhone as an app platform, popular to the extend that the iPhone relies heavy on it for applications - like the way the web depends on Flash for various things? Apple would be fucked. Thankfully for Apple, it isn't, and Apple has nothing to worry about.
Again without reference images, we can't really say which is correct.
Good catch on the resolution differences. But it might be just a mistake, as in the footballer one they are both the same resolution. The same for 1 & 9 too.
I don't notice much loss of detail in the ones on http://code.google.com/speed/webp/gallery.html , it's just that the webP ones are darker for some reason.
There is no reference image, so I have no idea which is more correct.
The iphone isn't much more expensive, sometimes even cheaper than other top of the line phones.
And like any other phone it value goes down over the years - but slower it appears and this is due to market forces more than anything else; there is demand for the phone, even the older ones.
As I said, I'm from a country friendly with the US.
IMO, while the US has been a bully at times, the most they do is apply economic pressure, and if the their target simply refuses to budge and the matter isn't that big a deal, they either compromise or just let it go. Only in the worst case does military force gets used.
In summary, again from my subjective PoV, the US at least has some respect for the sovereign and rights of the nations they interact with.
China? They don't seem to respect anyone. They feel just because they are bigger, they can force their will on anyone - to them might is always right 100% of the time. Strength and military percussions are the only thing they response to.
Now I wish my country didn't have to live under the thumb of superpower states. But I have to say, living under the thumb of the US appears to be better then living under the rule of the PRC.
Given the recent situation with Japan, I don't know how else to see China. Vietnam have been complaining about China's bully tactics for a while now, it's just that no one paid attention.
China has been gaining a lot of power, the US might not even be able to restraint them any more. Frankly it scares me.
I hate to say this but the moron Bush might actually be right, China has to be contained. If I could turn back time and somehow stop China from joining the WTO I would.
As for the US, the things you guys do in the middle east is one hell of a clusterfuck.
But I don't know. I think would rather live under the thumb of the US government than the PRC.
From my point of view, maybe it's because I'm from a country friendly towards the US, US in general have been relatively benevolent "rulers" in comparison to what China could be capable of.
Everyone makes decision at their level and don't question the orders that come from above their level.
The higher ups want your squad to attack a target. How you go about it when in the field is your decision to make, but you don't question the order to attack.
An undisciplined army that won't march in the same direction when commanded to, is a useless army.
I have been thinking about using Chrome for some time, it seems faster and already has a respectable community around it. But I also would like to avoid google stuff and I'm already used to Firefox, not sure if it is worth the trouble.... Any opinions?
Trouble?
Good lord, you make switching browsers sound like you packing up your life and moving to another city or something.
Just install it and import your bookmarks, the UI is pretty much self-explanatory if you have used a browser before.
The deal was ATT controls everything about the network, Apple controls everything about the phone.
This deal is still in effect today, ATT hasn't dare try to muscle Apple around regarding what goes on the iPhone.
It's the same deal everywhere around the world. My iPhone has no carrier crapware, no funny customizations that look more like ads for the carrier's other services. No displaying of my carrier's hideous logo on the startup screen, and no lousy sticks on the phone with the said logo.

Personally I think that unlike to happen.

But the question is, will it work?
Apple seems to have learned from it's mistakes of the past.
For one the price of their products like the iPhone aren't all that far off from their competitors' products of equal capability.
Being crazy over-priced for what they were selling was what killed them against IBM PCs back in the past if I'm right.
The current Apple seems a lot more capable at managing cost and keep an eye on what consumers are willing to pay.
I do wonder at times though, just how many Android phone sold are cheap low end "barely smart" phones.
Apple for most part has been keeping a "unified" front on their phones. All phones they are still selling have roughly the same abilities.
Old phones like the 3G are no longer sold, 3GS is the "current" baseline.
Apple is really selling "one" product. The Apple Phone. Of which there currently are 2 versions.
Was wondering when Amazon was going to enter the fray.
They already have a music store, selling apps isn't that big of a jump.
Already having peoples credit card numbers and the trust of most will also helps.
I kind of agree. Call it "moving with the times" if you may.

Create "something new" is called growth.
Something MS has been trying to do this couple of years with Zunes, xboxes, whatever.
Most of them were utter failures - thwarted by Apple nearly every step of the way.
The 360 only has the market share it has now because Sony screwed up big time, major big time with the PS3's launch.
Ballmer just doesn't have the aptitude nor vision to push MS ahead.
That's one thing I hate about the iPhone 4, it's slippery, and I feel I might drop it at any moment.
The bumper they gave fixed the situation though.
Glad that we have HTML5, it's not as mature as flash but it's getting there.

Apparently yes.
I really didn't see it.
A form of mental blindness I suppose.
We are now see their true colours.
They are like evil villains you see in the movies but for real.
We the world just made them into a very dangerous Superpower.
You know the orders have to come from somewhere.
That's what officers are for.
Everyone makes decision at their level and don't question the orders that come from above their level.
The higher ups want your squad to attack a target.
How you go about it when in the field is your decision to make, but you don't question the order to attack.

One of the problems is Google for some reason hasn't enabled paid apps in some regions.
In south east Asia for example, Apple App store works fine, but Google's limited to free apps.
Wrong product.
