    I hope that we at least get to see the season finale! as for those of you who stopped watching--shame on you, now what am I supposed to do on fridays, while I am stuck at work? oh wait, Dark Angel will be on then!..well what about on tuesday?...oh isn't that when the tick is on?... well, then..what about...wednsday? no..thursday?--no...monday?...what am I supposed to do on monday? watch allymacbeal/boston public? thank you, but just plain NO!

    First, like I said above, I am working on the phone thing, now as to home automation: see mrhouse, on freshmeat.

    As to Crossfading or partitioning windows: I think you(or I) have the wrong idea about what he meant by crossfading--I believe he meant more of in the style of audio--for instanve he used the example of dropping the volume on the mp3's to hear the caller id talk to you via festival--this happens to be exactly my project at the moment, so I know exactly what he means it's the idea that you drop something to the background when something else (like the phone) needs your attention.

    Now as to remote control-their is an application in linux that translates a remotes signal's to keypresses--people want this to control functions of the pc(such as video viewing,etc) via a regular remote--from what I hear, they work pretty flawlessly

    Displays information services in an acceptable format on a TV screen.

    I am looking into the matrox 450 for just this!--seems to be available for 70 bucks, but I can't figure out how the support for it in linux is yet(as in how well is dual head supported, and does xawtv display fullscreen properly on the tv head)

    * Does a decent job of being a voicemail/phone answering/notification system for incoming calls - or for that matter, does any decent voice functionality over voice lines at all
    yippeee!--I am working on it! so far I have got it talking to me on calls, now working on adding rules, and having it talk to the caller!--both are actually not to hard (I hope, looks good at the moment!)--started out modifying cid, and will be using vgetty for the answering machine parts!

    And just as a note, most of the other functions you are asking for are in(Tivo, radio, etc) are in similar 'almost finished'/working states--just give it a few months! especially the alarm clock -just cross mpg123 with cron!--duh!

    VCR
    does it in divx!--works great for me, so far--record a show, download it to work, watch at leisure!
    beats the black&white TV that I usually use!
    soon as I figure out how to stream divx, I will be set!

    how many times do you need to type rpm -Uvhf (or however you forc rpm's to install after dependency checking failed, which it will for soo many packages) to see that what you really want is to soemthing that installs or removes a packages files, and nothing more!

    oh, I already have slack 7.1 going(X 3.?, KDE1.something, kernel 2.1?)--I mostly use it to ssh back to my home box and check my mail(kmail) I have just been trying to figure out whether I would be better off with X 4.0.3, etc--also still gotta figure out if the damn mwave modem/soundcard/everything else works or not with 2.4!--I just hate to mess with something that works, even if it is just barely works!

    I consider the lack of dependency checking the major benefit of Slackware--no more forcing everything to install!

    I laugh as I use kde2.1, X4.0.2, etc---Slack current is as up to date as possible, plus if you want to bring it to the bleeding edge, Slack let's you do it without worrying about stupid package management!
    I suppose that my problem is that all I want from packages is an install and uninstall button, which is just what you get with slack paks! I'll keep up with the dependencies by reading the instructions, just like I should!

    Think of it this way--it is easier to see at a glance all the brackets the way the previous poster uses them, as they line up--you can tell which one go together just by their position. Not that I am saying yours or his is better, just that their are justifications for both--don't be so harsh!

    if you washed it every day, it would take 3 years to wash it 1000 times!--are your 1000 batteries going to last that long, and are you going to have thm when you need them?--I am not trying to say it's usefull, just that 1000 washings is quite a few!

    Someone, please, moderate these *major guys down, they are in every story, with the same crap every time...and my fingers have gotten tired of scrolling past them and the follow up comments--please let's all acknowledge that they are just trolls, and not meant for serious comments, and ignore them!
    Please? I am fairly sure I have seen at least three of them so far today, and reading there same boring junk is really annoying. Mod them down, don't respond, and the at the least it will be harder to see!

    nope-for a while, we had one digital cable box, and several other TV's plugged in to the regular cable--all from one split line,and the regular cable and the digital cable all workd fine!

    just because the long/lat is displayed on a map, does not mean that it does not exist--and just cause you don't know how it works, don't call it bull just because I referenced my GF, as it happens I know several other pople who work for other companies(lubbock being a good place to put call center's) and have heard mention of similar systems at their place's of business. And for the record, I did mention that it was hiddin, didn't I--only the tech's knew about it, apparently, and one just happened to show it to her
