  1. Open vs. Closed source on Apache Vulnerability Announced · · Score: 2

I think everyone needs to think about this before spouting more nonsense.

Putting aside the issue of ISS releasing it too early or the amount of bugs MS products have...

Since Apache is open source, ANYONE can look at the code and do some debugging. We don't have to wait for a coding team to code it, a debugging team to debug it, a compiling team to compile it, a testing team to test it....

Doesn't open source speed up the entire process since any amount of coders can do the patching? I would assume that the Apache team already has a boatload of patch candidates sitting in their inbox right now.

The true nature of open source is the fact that MANY coders can review the source. I'm sure a million bugs were PREVENTED already because some guy out in Kansas said "hey dude...you don't want to do it like this. try this..."

  2. "Smart Carts" at Giant Foods on The Next Tech Revolution · · Score: 2

I remember several years ago, the shopping carts at Giant Foods (huge grocery chain around here) were fitted with LCD screen and sensors. It would help you locate products, find your way around the store, etc. It would also bring up ads and talk about the stuff that you're passing at the moment.

Miserably failed and they removed them...but it was a neat idea. Probably way before its time.

One thing to add is that since Cheap Channel bought SFX Entertainment, they've been choking out "competitor" stations for concerts (I work for a Cumulus Media station).

Isn't it in the best interest of the artist to get as much exposure as possible? Too much corporate scandal and politics...we exist FOR the artist..not BECAUSE of the artist.

Just wanted to mention that Zophar's Domain has a *HUGE* collection of original soundtracks and music files from the games...in the original format (SPC, NSF, GYM, etc). Probably the largest and most complete console music collection around.

If you don't know what it is...use the SPC as the example. SPC is the file format for an SNES sound file...extracted directly from the game. The player emulates the hardware, so it sounds EXACTLY like it does on the SNES.

    A few links:
Links to the players are provided on the individual pages, but the best multi-console music player is Meridian Advance.

When you get sick of remixes, check out the originals and remember your childhood :)

I'm an honest person...I have nothing to fear from a system such as this.

Maybe their lawyers got smarter or more paranoid? I had to write a terms of service and privacy policy for a site...and it had all the "nice" stuff in it that the former SF one had. The lawyer said it was junk and it'll never save our collective behinds.

This lawyer also pointed out that you don't HAVE to stick to the policy....by that, I mean SF admins can be nice about it and give you your project stuff if you get booted. They can still do everything in the old one...they just now have the option to be mean to mean people.

  9. ..and how about the processor? on Responsible Handling of Billing Information? · · Score: 1

I run an online store that has credit card processing via Cardservice with Linkpoint. I'm currently rewriting the real time authorization software for it because the system they use writes all the info to a plain text file, and shells out from within PHP to execute a binary which reads the temp file with the CC info. (FYI: I was thinking of doing an SSL PHP module hack)

I think a more important question is "Does the credit card processor have enough security?" Here is the reply from Linkpoint's coding team when I said that writing plain text to a temp file is unacceptable for me and my customers:

"Writing to a temp file is how the PHP wrapper works. It is only insecure if your server is an environment where a hacker can get in and grab that temp file. Don't you have a firewall up?? If you are running a secure server then writing the info to a temp file to pass to the LBIN object should not be a problem. We have thousands of people using this product currently. This is not a security risk."

The suggestions about using public/private key encryption is excellent...it's the system I use. But how is Surepay handling the cards? Are the other major gateways giving their clients the same kind of software? Do processors such as Paypal, Surepay, et al use this kind of software? All the security of your CC database won't mean a thing if that's not the method a cracker uses to grab the info...

Should send them a link to this Ask Slashdot...

  14. Uhh...no? on BoyCott Advance · · Score: 2

I don't see how this news is astonishing and breakthrough...our emulation archive has Boycott Advance builds as far back as February...not to mention none of the released GBA emulators can do anything other than play demos.

Furthermore, the authors didn't just guess how it works...the schematics and such were leaked long, long ago. Since the Japanese release, emulators have improved, but since the US release hasn't happened yet, they're still not capable of any decent commercial emulation.

Now, since GBA emulation received such huge mainstream attention via /., I wouldn't be surprised if the IDSA and/or Nintendo go after it and try to pull some nonsense with the DMCA (probably won't work because it wasn't reverse engineered...the details were released) or contract out some evil h4x0r to send an EMP into the authors' houses. Whether they succeed or not, they still will have achieved their goal by implanting the thought in everyones' mind...."GBA emulation is bad mmm'kay, and we can get sued".

The more important people in "the scene" tend to ask that you use emulation to relive old experiences on systems that are no longer being developed or have long been broken...so...if you're insistant upon GBA emulation, use the "try before you buy" method. If you like it, Nintendo deserves your money.
