If what you're abbreviating isn't obvious from the abbreviation, and it isn't a standard abbreviation that has already existed for many years, you shouldn't use it.

It is, it is, and it has.

  2. Release date: 2020 on Perl's Extreme Makeover · · Score: 4, Insightful

I was very excited about Perl 6 when Larry started releasing apocalypses. I really hate to say it, because I'm as big a fan of Perl as anyone... but at the current rate, we're not going to see a full specification (much less implementation) of Perl 6 anytime in the next 15 years. There have been 6 apocalypses in the past 3 years, and there are supposed to be about 30 in all.

Perl has a long history of being practical and useful rather than theoretically perfect, and it makes me sad to see the trend reversing with Perl 6. It seems like Larry is trying to make Perl 6 everything to everyone. That's one sure way to fail (although TMTOWTDI, of course :-) It's just not useful to anyone if it doesn't exist.

They're mostly EverAnime discs I got off eBay over the last few years. But they're not too bad quality, I don't think. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good place to get them... the guy I bought most of the discs from apparently died in a car accident last year.

  5. I would love to go on First U.S. Final Fantasy Concert Announced · · Score: 4, Insightful

I would love to go to this. Of course, I'm probably the exact person they're targeting... I have about 20 Final Fantasy soundtrack CDs, including all the piano collections, remixes and all that. It makes nice background music while coding, so I listen to them all the time. And almost makes me feel like I'm playing video games, which is nice :-)

Jeez, my brain has been soaking in Perl too long.

This morning a local Utah radio station was playing McBride sound bites trashing the Linux community, too. And it was made painfully obvious that nobody had a clue what this whole thing is about, since immediately after the clips, a newscaster reported that "SCO is suing Microsoft because they say Microsoft copied a program called Unix and renamed it Linux". (pronounced LYE-nucks)

I've written to the station to point out the fact that almost every syllable in that report was incorrect. But I have to think that Darl loves this virus, since it gives him more opportunity to take unchallenged potshots at the Linux and Open Source community on TV and radio.

You know, I've had the same thing happen at certain places of business, like banks or pizza parlors. I'll be standing there nicely at the counter, having taken the courtesy of moving my physical person to their place of business, and I'll be preempted by someone calling in on the telephone. "Hang on just a second, I have to help this person on the phone." Umm, okay. If I want priority, should I not stand in line, but rather jump the line by staying home and giving you a call?

I've thought that I've solved calculus (and other) problems in my sleep before. Once I even forced myself awake so I could write down on paper whatever brilliant thing had come to me in my dream. When I woke up in the morning, the writing was mostly unreadable, but the readable words said something utterly stupid, like "half of pigs rolling will unite the values". Maybe dreaming is sort of like being drunk, in that you perceive yourself as much smarter than you really are.

It's 6 years of potential new discoveries and technology, but such things don't make it into the mainstream instantly. Banks still rely on mainframes running 30-year old COBOL code. Average users today are still using Windows 98 (which is itself almost 6 years old), or even Windows 95. I wouldn't be surprised if a great many people were still using today's software and security techniques in 2010, regardless of what happens on the security front between now and then.
