    I'm not going to argue that smoking isn't dangerous. But if you prohibition of tobacco would have result other than more deaths, then you haven't paid attention to alcohol and drug prohibitions.

    Smoking is bad, but outlawing it would be worse.

    Correlation doesn't equal causation, but it does correlate with it. If the people who studied Algebra II in high school tend to have more successful careers than those who didn't, that would seem to be pretty strong evidence that it's an important subject and should be taught.

    Mostly I come to slashdot to read the commentary, the actual summary isn't bothering me that much. In fact this just makes it harder to read.

    Still easier to read than when it's written in bright pink and peppered with text speak.

    Won't happen, not after Tienanmen. But the thing is, it doesn't have to. China has a growing middle class with burgeoning economic clout. And regardless of what Mao thought, power comes from the strings of a purse not the end of a gun. Eventually, the ruling elite are going to have to give up some control or the wealthier Chinese will just start leaving and taking their wealth with them (and in this age of digital currency, good luck trying to stop that).

    Nope, you're wrong. There is no "unless" in the hypothesis that raising taxes rarely, if ever, increases income. We're talking about effects in macroeconomics, arguing something in microeconomics isn't going to work.

    The higher the government taxes, the more incentive people have either to hide their income, or just not bothering with earning in the first place. That is a fact that is as plain as the nose on your face. Please follow the rest of this thread and read through the data I linked to.

    The only record of a broadband provider suing a potential competitor was TDS suing a local city to prevent them from launching a competing service using tax dollars. Do I have to spell out for you why that situation is drastically different and not at all comparable?

    No, I "shut up" when I realized you were more interested in partisan finger pointing than in solving any actual problems (you still haven't given any reason why it's so important to focus on who ran up the debt; both major parties ran it up, which anyone who pays attention to the government would know).

    That case has nothing to do with this one. It was a broadband provider suing a municipality to stop them from using taxpayers' money (including theirs, since the company paid taxes as did their employees) to build a competitor. So nice try, but it doesn't pass the smell test.
