What third-party web hostings apps were you using? And why did you leave your customers' data in them when you closed up shop? This whole thing reeks of incompetence on your part and possible stupidity on your former customers' part (if someone I used to do business with sent me an invoice for services after not sending any for months/years, I'd at least contact them to see if it was valid, possibly just delete it and see if they send another one).

At this point, you have a responsibility to contact your former customers and let them know it's not you sending out new invoices. Whether they end up paying them or not is their problem, but you created this mess by not acting responsibly. Don't be surprised if some of them expect you to reimburse them for paying the Russians.

The best available studies show that, once a suspect is arrested and charged, the probability of conviction is the same regardless of their actual guilt or innocence of the the particular crime with which they are charged.

How you can read that as anything other than a scathing indictment on the failures of our "Justice" system is beyond me. You actually support sending innocent people to prison because, well, they probably got away with something else, so this gross miscarriage of justice is okey-dokey.

As for Sheriff Joe, if people break the law (enter the country illegally) shouldn't the law enforcement officials arrest them and detain them?

    Short answer: nope.

Long answer: should the county sheriff also enforce Federal laws on copyright? What about Federal banking regulations? Want the county sheriff to review your income tax return and make sure you're not claiming too many deductions? Maybe he can have his deputies kick in the doors at a research hospital that isn't compliant with FDA requirements on drug testing?

The local authorities should focus on enforcing the laws of their locality, not every single law that's on the books somewhere. Doing so is just a waste of scarce resources.

A rational response to not wanting to pay for other people's mistakes is to set up a system where you don't pay for other people's mistakes, not try to legislate those mistakes out of existence. If smokers were prevented from taking part in public health plans like Medicare I think you'd see a lot less smokers out there...in about a generation or so after the first batch died off.

No, but you implied it by saying the previous incarnation of these companies had their infrastructure paid for with taxpayer funds, then the new private companies got to "keep" that infrastructure. They didn't keep it, they bought it.

Basically they're the old monopoly telecoms who got to lay the telephone lines in the past using taxpayer's money and later got privatised, keeping ownership of all that infrastructure.

You say that like no one had to pay for the companies and their infrastructure. When a state-owned business is privatized, it is sold off to investors, either through shares or lock, stock, and barrel (shares can also be given away to citizens, but this type is far less common). So the state, and by extensions the tax payers, are compensated for the costs involved in building out the infrastructure.

So when you say these new private enterprises "kept" the ownership of the infrastructure, you're betraying your profound lack of knowledge in how these things work. Which means everyone can safely ignore the rest of your post, however coincidentally insightful it might be.
