Quiznos (like Starbucks) only thrives because of the corporate-type jobs that exist here. As the jobs decrease, chains like this will also begin to decrease.
the average unemployed computer geek is significanlty better off than the Indian worker who "stole" his job.
No, the average Indian in Banglador making between 11k and 17k can afford a maid and other in-house help and lives quite well. The programmers in the US that can afford McMega Mansions (etc) are the minority (aren't they?), most of us make 40-60k. Better than most white collar workers our age, but don't exaggerate it either.
I think the cost of living increase since the 50's is what is preventing blue collar workers from supporting their families.
compare prices back then to prices now, take into account inflation, and it's still incredible how much more things cost now. eg. a typical house 3bd 2ba house in 50's burbs cost 17k, now around 400k.
and yes, american labour has priced itself out of the market.
when you consider a taxi ride from Puxi is approximately 180 RMB
the airport to the peace hotel (near the bund & where I always stay when in shanghai) I've never paid more than 15 RMB. Reason? Take a bus. Much cheaper than the taxi and far cheaper than a train.
We are willingly shipping them high skilled jobs so Mr. CEO
We? More like a small minority of corporate owners are shipping out a large majority of American jobs. Don't know where the 'we' comes in, unless you are part of the corporate clique.
so... if I drive my SUV 10 miles to work and back, I'm worse than the person who drives their more fuel-efficient car 30 miles to work and back? We use up the same amount of gas.
And, do SUV's pollute more than other cars?
pollution that is killing us with heat, monsoon, drought, famine
less people use libraries (for books). So libraries get less funding. Okay, so I can't back that statement up with any articles, but just based on what I see the few times I've visited a library recently, the media centres are much more prominent and widely used than anything else. I'm sure that libraries divide their budgets between books and computers, and most right now spend a large portion of the budgets on computers to keep the public coming in. In other words, no point in the public tax funds funding books if no one is using those.
It must have been a rather good pair of VR goggles if Kasparov could have kept then on for the duration of a match. I mean, if you think about how hard you would be concentrating on the images during a chess match, you would expect significant eye strain to develop.
Right; given the fact that the Scouring of the Shire was already cut from the get-go, the only possible scene Saruman can have is having his staff broken by Gandalf and being killed by Grima Wormtongue. That being said, I will miss watching the interaction between Christoper Lee and Ian McKellan on the big screen - they had the best chemistry together in the first movie. That was truly find acting.
google can never lost all of it's attraction as it has an invaluable amount of usenet information archived and allows easy posting/searching of newsgroups.
and now: for something completely different. I have seen coconuts here in Albany, which means that, as they don't grow here, they must migrate. Ah, but how did the coconuts get there? Were they carried by african or european swallows?
black and white are not shades of gray. a shade is light diminished in intensity. White has no diminishment, else it would be gray. Shade is also a gradation of darkness. Black has no such gradation, else it would be gray.
well, that's maine. here in CA, there's practically one on every street corner in the white-collar/downtown environs of most cities.

More profits for US corporations = more US tax dollars = a more sustainable "new deal."
What? So one of the benefits of the "global economy" is a bigger and more socialist government? Why is this a good reason?

well actually, it's more of a tourist thing.
chaos includes SUV's, but there's nothing we can do about them.
yes, but if I drive x miles/day and another car with 2X mpg drives 2X miles/day, what's the diff?
"Worse MPG" * "Not the same distance" = more (or maybe less) gas.
so sod off...

Merry Christmas!
What negligible effect does my SUV have on the environment?
not listening, not listening

Banff is pretty much ruined these days. Too much development. Time to head up north into the Yukon or beyond.

IIRC, half of the 10,000 employees IBM was talking about would be in India.
I wish I could find the link, but I'm pretty sure that is what I read.
At that point, it ceases to become rhetoric ...

I make exactly that and flew almost exactly twice that last year. I'm an underpaid, overworked consultant. got any others?
or, here's an attachment of an AlT+PrtSc I took of the email... have fun.
