Oh, yes, gawd forbid anyone speak badly about the united states, especially when it's the truth. After all, the united states is the sole superpower in the world - they can do no wrong!
The answer is DIY, Do It Yourself, or find someone who Does It Themselves. Independant labels can be successful, and are usually working harder to give the artists their fair share in the deal.
I've heard many people argue that independant labels can't be successful because they're not corporate giants. This is bad and dangerous thinking, in my opinion. If labels like Dischord (owned by Fugazi's Ian McKaye), or Alternative Tentacles Records (Jello Biafra's label) can be as successful as they have been, then it's only a matter of how one advocates what they are doing and how one advertises oneself. If artists are truly interested in their share of what is made from their music, they should work together to form other niche labels instead of making a pact with the devil.
4.Why can't I play this disc on my Macintosh-based computer?
This CD will play in PCs running Microsoft Windows95,Windows98, Windows2000, Windows ME, Windows XP or Windows NT 4 with Service Pack 4.
We hope to include Macintosh-based playability on copy-protected discs in the future.
Great. If you're not a PC user supporting Microsoft's evil regime, you can forget listening to that overpriced CD on your computer.. at least, for the time being. Thanks for warning me, Universal. I'll remember to watch out for CDs with your label on them, so I don't buy them.
If people shouldn't have the freedom to choose whatever license they want, does that mean RMS will have to choose for us? How do I know what license to use if I can't just choose any one? Why does it matter which license you choose - if someone doesn't like what license you've chosen, they can always choose not to use your software. I believe that is one of the basic principals of freedom, is it not?
"I feel sorry for the guy, but to me, this looks like a case of an overloaded, poorly packed box going through a shipping network that doesn't really care if the contents get from point A to point B in one piece, just that it gets there. Next time, if you're not sure, have a professional pack it and make sure it's insured."
A phenomenon called "EVP", short for "Electronic Voice Phenomenon". It involves using basically any recording device (a portable one, preferrably), in a place that you think might be haunted in some way. Also, taking pictures works.. you'll see orbs and what looks like puffs of smoke when you get them developed.
A good place to look for more info on this subject is http://www.ghostwave.com
I've done a little bit of EVP recording myself. If you want to hear my more successful recordings, check out http://codeblack.mg2.org/paranormal/evp
So.. how is this different from, say, me taping a show for my friends, pausing out all of the commercials, and then sending out copies of the tape in the mail? It's slower, sure.. but, same deal.
IMHO, this is what the Linux "movement" has been about from the beginning. It's not Linux's fault that RedHat decided an entire office should be switched over to Linux. That's RedHat's fault. As we all know, RedHat is a corporation, like Microsoft. Therefore, RedHat has to compete. What's their biggest competition? MICROSOFT.
Linux is not "at war" with anyone, never has been. That's not what it's about. If there's anyone "at war" it's the zealots that think everyone should have Linux on their desktop. If that is to EVER happen, major improvements need to be made to not only the office apps, but the interface used as the "desktop environment" as well. Sure, it looks pretty. But it's a memory hog, and so are the office apps. I wouldn't use them to save my life.
I agree 100% with the "teach by example" bit. If you like Linux, use it and use it well. Forcing people to use Linux, or telling them Microsoft sucks will never change a thing.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet, but it reminds me slightly of the semiconductor fabric that Luis Wu had at his disposal to fix up the the electronics on the Ringworld.
Not the same technology, but sort of the same idea.
Here's a better question: why must "liquor" and "social life" be codependant terms? Surely drinking isn't all people do to have a social life.. what a sad world we live in if that's true.
Why are they using 747's? Do they really need that much space to shove a computer into, that just locks onto a target and fires a laser? You could probably do it with a Cessna, for a hell of a lot less, and have the advantage of not being such a gigantic blip on someone's radar screen.
The company mentioned in the title also has a practice similiar to this. If you come to work one day and find that you login to your station, it means you're fired. Taima does tech support for over a dozen different ISPs, such as NetZero, Rogers@Home, and RoadRunner.
Yes, sue every library, and anybody that uses Yahoo, go2net, Excite, Lycos, or just about any search engine in existence, as well as anybody that every has to query any sort of database.
I'd like to see them try.

Don't give Microsoft more ideas!

The ALOHA network revisited. Oh gawd.
You can't buy freedom.

"Computer? Hello, computer?"
"Uh.. you have to use the keyboard."
"Ah.. they keyboard. How quaint."
"TRANSPARENT ALUMINUM?!?!?"
When the architecture you're keeping backwards compatibility for no longer exists. (ie EMS/XMS in
WinDOS)

Yeah, cause it sure wasn't the NRA that started it. Let's blame Napster! Guns don't kill people, people kill people!

Weird.. I knew Rob Woolley when we were in high school. Didn't expect him to show up on Slashdot ;)
Last time I talked to him, he wanted to play around with X-10 home automation stuff.
Talented guy, he is.

You mean using Microsoft software didn't pose a gigantic security threat before they were hacked?

I knew about this about three weeks ago.. but I won't ruin the surprise :)
Duck and cover.
Jello Biafra for President!
Free Mumia Abu Jamal!
Hasn't anyone ever seen The Explorers?
Seems like a very Star Trek-ian technology.
