  1. slashdotters: buy more legos! on Lego Goes Back to the Basics: Building Blocks · · Score: 1

i've often thought in recent years that LEGO had really gone downhill with all the specialized sets. sure, some of them were kinda cool (the Millenium Falcon comes to mind), but overall it just seemed like there wasn't any way to get away from what the designers intended, and run wild with my imagination.

the older sets were great, because as soon as you got bored with the configuration the instructions provided (ok, i'm a boring guy.. i always did the instructions first), you could tear it apart and build whatever you wanted, and if you brought in your piles and piles of other pieces from other sets, the possibilities were limitless.

it's sad that Mindstorms is having to go, though. very cool idea. hopefully they'll bring it back after they get back on their feet.

i've been a lego fan for a long time, but i haven't really bought any sets in too long... i think i'm going to start buying more. maybe if all us slashdotters buy a few sets, we'll give LEGO the financial boost it needs. :)

  2. netscape, shmetscape on Apple's Response to Microsoft: Unix Ads? · · Score: 1

personally, (and i realize i may get my pants flamed off for this) i actually prefer IE to Netscape. i use IE as my main browser, and i've tried everything from Opera to Omniweb and all inbetween. and i actually have all of them currently installed, and switch back and forth a bit... i've even got straight up Mozilla installed, as well as Netscape 6.2.2. anyway, my feelings are that as soon as Netscape gets its act together and is more conscientious about its program, i might start using it. but right now, IE is a lot more stable, and easier to use (for me).

one thing i particularly like about IE is the way they handle bookmarks (favorites, whatever)... maybe it's just me. eh... it's all a matter of preference anyway. but i sure hope Apple isn't gonna ditch IE now... and actually, i really hope MS doesn't ditch us either... Office X is actually a program i like... esp. Entrourage.

oh heck... i've sold out... AAHHHHH!!!!!

  3. um... no on Could a Pen Replace the Keyboard? · · Score: 1

i dunno, but personally i'd much rather type than write any day. certainly, keyboards could be more efficient... (Dvorak standard?) but a pen? nah... i think pen input is great when i want to draw or paint in photoshop, but as far as daily use... eh eh.

of course... while i'm dreaming... i still think it'd be so much easier if we had thought-reading input devices....

  5. Re:Left hand on Apple Wants Your Input · · Score: 1

ok, i'm not left handed, but i have a close friend who is, and if anyone were to get righteously indignant about something, it would be him. and he never has... also, i've had to use my right hand for key-combos before (usually due to food residue on my left hand), and i've never had a problem. i think you're just lazy, and want a good excuse to bash the Mac OS. it's not bad, it's just different. and besides, if you're really that desperate, just do what i did and buy a multi-button mouse. third-party devices work pretty well, i'd say... and they won't break the bank, neither. hope you'll reconsider your caveat with the Mac.

  6. that's just weird on Japan to Allow Human-Nonhuman Mixed Cloning · · Score: 1

ever hear that old cliche "life is stranger than fiction"?

and is anyone else getting flashbacks to the "flamethrower" scene in Aliens 4?

personally, i think they should research cross-species bio-enhancements, like having a multi-million dollar surgery to be able to run as fast as a cheetah, or to climb as well as a spider monkey. how cool would that be?
