Allowing spam bots onto chat channels guarantees that nice players will no longer join chat channels.
Spam bots joined public games too. It's not so much about hosting a private server, if I wanted to do that I'd just connect directly. More along the lines of control: I want to control who I play with. Sometimes I want to play with new/random people, AND I want abusive people permbanned more quickly than Blizzard was doing.

As Hoknor said, Open Battle.net is a hackfest. That's not what I want. I want to be able to choose a server with more reasonable rules, for example: Maphack is OK, hacked chars & duping are not. Future BnetD mods could be created that would implement full MMO.

Most of the same arguments used for Open Source vs Closed Source can be applied to BnetD too.

The whole point behind BnetD is control and freedom. That they happened to be pirates was very unfortunate.

    >

Here's my top 4 reasons for wanting BnetD (and notice that they DO NOT include piracy):
5 - Store characters on a server that will last longer than 90 days AND are non hackable.
4 - Allow/disallow Maphack at MY choosing. (Maphack is not a hacking tool, it is a UI improvement)
3 - Choose who can join my server. (No Spambots, just my friends + their friends)
1 - Mod support. All of the really great games were that way because of the Modding community.

Another reason Blizzard shut down BnetD besides piracy is that they would lose their ad revenue.

Play Anarchy Online instead for free.

"Although it lacks true locomotion that our slimepads provide, the device does appear to be capable of some limited locomotion" Perov stated. "We may have some fun, err Run some scientific experiments on it before we topple it upside down into a crater."
Appearance of the object was backtracked to the brightly lit object first observed through the Hibble intragalactic telescope. Hibble stated that its track was reminiscent of the flares described by his great-great grandfather Hindle near the time of Pretty Bright Flashes on our ugly neighbor. These flares were also the ones that brought the Huge-Ugly-Meat-And-Nylon-Suits down in the Hosgevarten district in 10034.5. For those that don't remember the incidents, the HUMANS were responsible for severe environmental disturbances in the 10030 era. Our world preservationist organization KOWS (Keep Our World Safe) released a press release stating in part "We must not disturb any marks from the new landing, just like we did for the earlier HUMANS encroachment. Otherwise they might know we're here and disturb us too in their clumsy methods of scientific discovery. Remember that they did kidnapp many members of our quiet and peaceful Rock neighbors during their last visit." The local Rock spokesman has been asked for comment and it is believed we will have the answer some time around 10099.
Meanwhile KOWS is urging that citizens stay indoors, and not to earth the visitor before it has been neutralized by the FWM.

Game: Bad. Detrimental too because this limits the gaming choices.
World: Assassins exist, so ganking should exist, however so does other forms of PvP.

    2: Economy is simplistic.
Community: Bad. Simple economies means that anyone can supply a good or service, which means less interaction.
Game: Bad. duh... complex economies have more depth.
World: Bad. Doesn't match our expectation of a world.

    3. Character transfers between realms.
Community: Depends on the size of the realms. Probably bad, because it limits your interaction.
Game: Good. Improves responsiveness for the game.
World: What... do they have parallel universes? You've just split one world and community into fragments... Bad.
