I'm using Mandrake Cooker with gcc 3.1.1. GNOME2 compiles and works. In fact, everthing included, minus the software that is under development, like the Mandrake tools, works fine with the new compiler. This included getty, bash, linux (the kernel), Xfree, libraries, galeon, mozilla, gnome and kde.
What would be even better is a miniature nautilus window for the open / save dialog. I mean, you already have nautilus, why reinvent the wheel with a different open/save dialog box? Using Nautilus would add consistency and functionality. Taking this a step further, "panels" could be used as application toolbars, such that the user can add or remove "applets" (which would be funcitons in the program) to his toolbars to customize them however he likes. Again this would be reusing components. I have submitted these suggestions to both gnome and kde but both did not like them:(
Thanks for the info. I still don't see how software is an actual "thing" since what really is going on is just a microprocessor executing instructions; couldn't someone just say they generated every possible set of CPU instructions and nullify any future patents?
Nobody can sue you (and win) for writing computer programs that uses patents, because a patent must be novel. Mathematics and computer science are natural and therefore not novel.
Funny how the music on commercial airwaves sounds either exactly like Limp Bizkit or Creed. Also funny how 98.3% of the music available on p2p filesharing systems is these same bands.
let's get rid of English, even though it's not even American, because that language is way too hard for foreigners to understand.

You're right, it is a pain in the ass. The different sizes make it hard to keep a stack of bills together, because the shorter ones keep falling out. It's also a pain to use different sized bills with wallets.
You can disable the HTTP referer (tells the web server which URL you were at before you clicked the link) in Mozilla also. Just edit your prefs.js or user.js file and add: user_pref("network.http.sendRefererHeader", x);
where x is: 0 means NEVER send the referer, 1 means send only for images, and 2 means always send referer. Note that if you disable this, some sites won't work, specifically sites dealing with lots of images and shopping sites.
You're right, Caps Lock is no longer useful for trolling slashdot, now that it has lameness filters. Remove the key.
Regarding left handed people, you might notice that there's still the whole right side of the board intact, brought to you by the letters I, J, K, and L.
Whoops, forgot to mention reason for all this: computer programs shouldn't rely on having all those unnecessary keys when you have three modifiers (ctrl, alt, shift) and 55 keys within immediate reach. Moving your hands back and forth to the function keys, arrow keys, number pad, home/end block puts unnecessary strain on your wrists and hands. Old macs, Games, Emacs and vi just further show that you can navigate properly without arrow buttons.
Thing Next To Windows with the Arrow and menu thing(same side as above)
PrtScn
ScrLk
Pause
Home
End
Delete
Page Up
Page Down
Insert
UP arrow (But what about games??? you cry. Ever heard of WASD?)
DOWN arrow
LEFT arrow
RIGHT arrow
The whole friggin numeric keypad (this allows space for your mouse so you arm is not bent all over the side of your desk)
Finally, switch escape with caps lock (for all you friendly vi users), and optionally remove the function keys. Surprise! You now have a typewriter with shift, control, and alt. That's all ya need folks! The best part is...you can still use emacs! If you really need a numeric keyboard, you should be able to buy it separately.
I think part of the reason why it takes so much effore to write a (complete) browser is that there are so many W3C standards and they are so complicated. I mean, they are great for the end user to write pages in because it's really easy (if your browser supports them, of course), but even CSS2 is pages upon pages, nobody fully supports it yet, and it's four years old! Perhaps these standards are just too much? Even "simple" HTML is bizarre and overly complex by having things like headers and paragraphs that you can do in DIV's with CSS now. XHTML replaces it, but they leave in all the HTML stuff for compatibility. Of course, my favorite is that XML is an ugly re-invention of LISP s-expressions. I.e., you could write <HTML body="whtie">etc etc</HTML> or in an S-expression it would be: (HTML (@BODY whtie) etc etc), consume less space, and be easier to parse as well.
That's just for static pages...don't get me started on javascript (version incompatibilites), document object models, java, visual basic scripts...
Did you know that you can get free satellite TV too!?!? Those satellites they use for TV actually beam their signals at every house! No lie! All you need is a little dish (steal someone's--people actually leave those things outside at night!) and a computer!!!
Or, being able to profit from their invention instead of going out of business, this company will be able to fund research and devlopment to eventually sell MEMS at $40, and soonafter the patents will expire.
MEMS retinal displays in use today have such high color saturation that they are capable of displaying colors never before seen on a computer of television screen.

How do you choose the filenames?

This joke shows up in just about every article, yet it never gets old. Why???
If I keep seeing this joke, I'm going to break a funny fuse.

That should look excellent on my computer's PCI television tuner.

How the fuck is that offtopic? Fucking moderators today.

There you go--at slashdot.org we don't spell wrong, we spell lossy.
Actually yes, sort of. A newer trend is to rip a CD as just one WAV file, and then encode that to a single MP3 file, "artist - album.mp3".
