If only we could secure wireless technologies. Maybe we could have the signals travel in a secure method - maybe down some sort of tube. maybe the tube would have to have some sort of "antennae" - maybe it should be of some conductive material - like copper.
We should also make sure that these "tubes" are shielded in some way - with maybe a suple rubber coating.
Then the wireless signals could travel through this "tube" from the keyboard to the computer - thus rendering them safe from nasty hackers that may be listening.
I definitely dislike the registration process, but I do not think that all things should be free.
I do, however, fell and expect that NEWS should be free - because that is how we have been made to expect NEWS, by the model that has been in place. The thing is that we do pay for news when its in a printed form, like a newspaper. You have probably noticed - or maybe you havent, that newspapers are very very cheap. 35 cents - for the most part. The reason is that in order to ensure that a large number of people buy the newspaper - they sell it very cheap. Then they charge large sums for advertising spece (because they reach a wide audience).... but for the user this news source is subsidized - by the advertisers. So - it is definitely not free. You have to give a small amount yourself, and you get a big fat newspaper in return - with lots of ads and hopefully lots of good news.
Now the main point here is that the paper version of the news costs the user very little - fractions of a dollar, and is completely anonymous. This means thatthe advertising has to be much more broad because of the anonymous factor of the readership.
The online version is still partially subsidized by advertising relationships - but its much less efficient due to the fact that the online readership is smaller. However - here we have the opportunity to eliminate the anonimity of the readers. This gives a much greater potential for return on investment for the advertisers - and makes a whole new possible pricing model for the sale of advertising space based on targets.
I've written a lot about this before on slashdot... but i cant find the comment. There are a lot of reasons why registering and using your personal details as currency is a very bad thing.
I choose not to register for news - period. I just think that my personal details should never be used for currency. and their monetary pull from their non-online operations is plenty. I dont have to register to purchase a newspaper. I dont have to register to purchase any other information in the world - but all of a sudden because its online - its ok for my personal details to be used as a matter of currency? thats rediculous. you should hold yourself at a higher level of worth than that.
Nethack was such a big influence in the lines of RPGs... and a great Thief of Time in so many of our lives.
Its a great game - it was an early online D&D style RPG - its fun. very fun.
But it requires that you get into it because you loved D&D and love the RPG genre. If you cant get over the lack of wild 3D fragging madness - then move on...
I know that it may be hard for "newbies" (i.e. people who didnt play it when there was no such thing as 3d graphics) to get into it... but when it came out it quenched our thirst for a time by filling the RPG wish we had.
You should definitely give it a go. I would recommend starting it at the same time as a friend - that will help engender competition between your characters... and help you get into it a little easier.
Dont be fooled it is not lame. But I would recommend that you try Zangband.....
not a good point. The newspapers and news organizations make money off of advertising. in all likelyhood they got this story from another source (which is why we see it from other sources)
they make tons of money off advertising - and requiring readers to register for their stories is rediculous.
I cant stand all the people who try to argue for the registration on a site that is just going to give you a story that is available from other sources without such restrictions.
Do you pay for a subscription to slashdot? i doubt it - and if it was required from the first day, i doubt you would even be here....
News is information that is meant to be free. If I want opinionated biased *stories* I will pay for it. If I want news about whats happening in the world around me - I will get it from traditional news sources with a very long history of subsidizing the cost of production through advertising. The model has been like that for a very long time - and by the amounts that most major news anchors make, I dont think they are hurting - or even would be hurting from our wanting of free access to the "news" they are offering.
what is the range on these exactly. and how good is the signal - what type of penetration does it get.
If I use this in my 5th floor apartment - how far will the signal be usable. What if i stick it on the roof of my building. What if I zip tie it to a phone pole outside my house?
Can you answer these.... with real praactical answers?

The reason why they never looked into it way back when was because VAs stock was so high! too much money - not enough time to implement great new features!
The reason why they dont look into it now is because VAs stock is so low! no maney at all - not enough time to implement great new features!
This is already happening - and what funny is that when I mentioned this to some people i know - they totally disagreed and couldnt believe that I was saying what I was saying.
It was with regards to the show the "osbournes"
I was asked by some co-worker if I watched it. I said hell no - and I cant believe that anyone would watch that crap. If you watch it for more than 5 minutes it makes you feel like the biggest fscking loser alive. Why waste my time watching some complete fscking moron who cant even manage to open a packaged DVD, sit in his huge house making 20 million for doing nothing but being his lame ass washed up self - all the while my valuable time and life tick away must-see after must-see moment on the tube.
Anyone who watches any of these "reality" shows should take not and take a look at what the real reality is.
The reality is that you are letting you life tick away while you watch other people live thier lives - and you waste your precious life and time doing absolutely nothing but rot.
well - I dont know - that is still pretty cool. Except you can tell that its really not *that* flexible... the person was being very careful with that thing.
I love these though. but I would like to start legislation now preventing advertisments on clothing.
I want to make a nightclub and have the whole floor covered in that stuff - then have a thick plexiglass false floor about 6 feet above that - then project airiel views, space views and satellite images over the whole floor. and do that zoom in thing from the matrix.
Although the only problem is that it would cause the place to be the most popular for the LSD & E popping kids who just show up to lay on the floor and feel like they are flying...
Ya mom. Thats funny that she won it as a door prize - and then *sold* it to you. haha.
Sounds like something anyone would do - except she wasnt selling it to just anyone, she sold it to her kid! Way to go with your entreprenurial mom!
John Romero!
This is a perfect question for him!!
Just drive around with a WarKeyboard in your trunk that just send out a very powerful ALT+F4 non-stop.

can you please give us a rundown on what Slashdot physically and technically looks like?
no - MS charged $60+ for their mice forever! (although their Intellimouse is the best product ever made by Microsoft)
The reason why they never looked into it way back when was because VAs stock was so high! too much money - not enough time to implement great new features!
The reason why they dont look into it now is because VAs stock is so low! no maney at all - not enough time to implement great new features!
HEHEHE - ok so maybe I sounded a little extreme there.
I just really dont like the osbournes/real world/big brother/survivor type shows at all.
They make me feel ill....
but yes as the other poster says - some of it is funny - I just prefer not to watch any of those shows at all.
but I agree Down with the campfire story teller!!
the only problem is getting that paintbrush in those little hard to reach areas - like the heart.
a condom. to give you the penis of her desires?
