    Is this post for real?

First of all - with that ...wicca... part of your domain - I am sure you have more issues than just the noise that his machine was making.

Second - I dont blame him for leaving if you're constantly harping on him about things like the flipping key-stroke noise that kept you from getting all the rest you needed for your oh-so-difficult receptionist job.

Third - your not used to a lot of noise because your from scotland? but now all of a sudden your OK with it all because you have a computer job? I assume you have a much larger paycheck now - so it would seem that you didnt really care about the noise, you jsut cared about the money that you weren't getting. Now that you have a job making a larger wage you can suddenly forget about the fact that you're "from a rural area in Scotland, [and] not used at all to roaring cars and noise and humming computers"

Now you miss him because you could really use his computer?

    JEEEBBUUSS!!

Give me that guys email address - I would like to congradulate him for leaving you!!

well in the terms of a contract you would be correct. I should have been more clear.

Although I do think that if you inherit a network - and then become the true owner of the responsibility of said network, and you own it for some period of time without cleaning it up then you are lazy. That was more clearly what i was saying.

If you are a contractor - it is not always in your contract or in your interest to clean it up. If you are a company it is *always* in your interest to have a clean logical and well maintained network. *Especially* when some guy leaves and your next temp network contractor inherits the previous admins leavings.

    This is not always true!

If you have a company that you are trying to get new customers and investors to come on board - and you need to show them your technology, often times they like to come over and take tours of your datacenter - HQ - IT Dept or office in general.

Believe me - the asthetics of the cables that make your network have a very large impact on how people can view your company.

For example, this picture shows that this particular setup went up in flames at some point (look at the burn marks on the door and melted cables). now you think that if this closet was setup properly (which would include asthetics) that it would have gone up in flames so easily. And do you think that any client/partner/investor would think you had your priorities straight if they saw a closet like this?

I have always thought that how organized a companies wiring is - is a direct reflection of the staff that works there.

I know that when i moved into one company in Redwood City - the network wsa a nightmare. We had rooms that looke like that - but over the next 2 years we replaced almost every wire on that network - and demanded budget for proper closet setups - and got it.

We eliminated all those closets that looked like that, and learned one hell of a lot in the process.

I think that if your closets look like that - you are asking for fire - and it shows just how lazy you really are. No arguments of "I'm too busy" allowed - it just means your a lazy slob period.

  21. Yes. on RMS Urges Opposition to "Trusted Computing" · · Score: 4, Insightful

All MS bashing aside I find it very odd that people, with all their supposed privacy concerns, would even consider a company such as Microsoft or any other software vendor for that matter, trusted enough to hold a lot of personal information.

I understand the appeal of having an account that floats to any terminal that you log into - but having someone else in charge of that makes me nervous.

I mean - think of credit companies on steriods here.

For example - having a bank have some ability to control your money is one thing - but here you would have an account that could have much more information that you "own" but dont have full control over.

In your profile in the next 5 years will be such info as:

    bank info
documents, both personal and professional that are kept or written by you
habits file, browsing, shopping, reading, viewing etc.
    personal machine preferences
    owned/installed programs you use regularly.
    plus more

Now I cant understand why I would want to give anyone control over any aspect of this. Banking is a necesity in todays world - but that's as far as it should go. I dont wnat my bank to handle any information other than exactly how much money is in my account and when I access it. I wouldnt trust them with my personal documents etc... so why would I trust MS.

One argument against this could be the handling of hotmail accounts.

If you think MS is responsible enough with all you info then you have never been one of hundreds of thousands of whom who had their hotmail accounts "misplaced" with not so much as a sorry. (cant find a very good article on it - but I remember it when it happened)

What about how hotmail handles information as simple as your email address - and how much spam you get. What levels of access will "affiliates" and "advertising partners" have to all the info in your .net or palladium account?

There is already a proven track record to show why you would not want this info placed outside your control.
