I Am Not An Expert in DSL or Telco, but something just occurred to me.
The distance from the CO being something like 5 miles maximum for a DSL connection to work; this is a signal limitation due to attenuation from the DSL equipment at the CO to the Cisco 678 (or whatever brand you use) sitting on the floor in your room. Doesn't hooking up two dry pairs together basically just create a loop? If so, it would seem that the maximum distance either modem could be from the CO would be 2.5 miles...or if one person is only 1 mile from the CO, the other would have to be within 4 miles, etc.
This would also be cool for the regular consumer who wants to set up a neighborhood privatenet. I am curious if you could rig the tranciever to be unidirectional instead of omnidirectional so you could set them up on your rooftops and aim them at your friend's down the street or across town (assuming it is line-of-sight, what's the max range on these?).
The best part of this technology IMHO is that you don't have to lease or license bandwidth from the FCC to use point-to-point, like you do microwave.
For one thing, most of them are 50 cents or more. For another, you generally don't last too long in any of them, assuming they're not on a timer.
I was taking a vacation in Reno a couple of months ago, and I learned the value of dropping 50 cents for 5 minutes (maybe 10 if your good) of challenging game play versus 5 seconds of a slot machine where I got nothing back except the desire to drop another 50 cents to try to recoup my losses (repeat vicious cycle).
This is not news. Private companies fund research for universities as often as governments do as well. Do research projects that the government funds get treated the same way in the end as corporate-funded research? Of course they do. Corps/Govts claim just as many rights to patent materials.
Money is money, if the end result of corporate/government funded research is making society better in one way or another, I am all for it. By the same token, I can see where this can be a bad thing since a corp/gov can manipulate the end results to serve their own needs (cannabis research for example)
Using sattelite transmissions are not too practical getting that far north. During the summer months, when the sun is closer to the horizon and line-of-sight with the antennas it makes it kind of hard to send clear signals.
One of my teachers was telling me that sometimes it would take between 7 and 15 minutes to authenticate on the NT domains for one of the forementioned oil companies.
You could do it with a series of Peltier Elements. Loop your coils through a few heat sinks attached to them and you would have an effective heat pump that would be noise-free. However, the cost would be prohibitive since they run about 25 bucks apiece and use quite a bit of power.
Wouldn't those noise dampening sheets that you can find for cars (ala Crutchfield) work in this scenario? They would be good since they are only 0.075" thick. And to line the inside of your PC wouldn't cost more than $50US
I imagine it wouldn't be terribly hard to reinforce a 100 year old pipe. A quick and dirty way could be to flood them with a polymer to line the pipes, fill the cracks, and smooth out the surfaces, literally giving them a new life.

Hmmm, now that I think of it, you have got a good point. If the Fed really wanted to make counterfeiting as difficult as possible, use these dataglyphs, ran through a steganography algorithm and set up with a public/private key which can be confirmed genuine with a quick scan. Add that to the existing technologies on new bills, like the different colored embedded strips in the bills visible under blacklight. (I've seen 5's with blue, a 10 with a yellow, a 20 with a green, and a 50 with a yellow one)
on the other hand, I wonder how that would work on beat-up-run-through-the-washer-lying-on-the-ground -etc.-etc. bills? I don't think MNP-4 is going to cut it:P

I personally think that the Gran Turismo set is one of the bigger hit to be published by Sony. I am well impressed with the graphics and physics models that they incorporated.
However...
I am pretty sure that id Software is going to release Quake III Arena on the Xbox. At about the same time or sooner, we may see Quake Rally coming out as a mod which promises a killer physics engine. This is what people have been wanting (especially me) for a good racing game that allows you to make custom maps and vehicles. Could you imagine the money to be made by Xbox sales since it would be a direct threat to Gran Turismo 3 (which I saw today and was quit impressed)?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Stanley Kubrick would be proud.
oh, wait I don't think that would go over too well: KIll for Linux

See, Perpetual Motion DOES exist!

I just can't bear even thinking about it.

1:40am PDT, and you guys have slashdotted the NSA, I am so proud of you all :)
I have been watching Serial Experiments Lain and picking up some key phrases while at the same time being new to Japanese.
Everything I know about Eastern culture, I learned from Anime. :)

Yes they do offer a module for the graphics board. Look at their website again.

And this is sounding more and more Gibsonish. All we need now is for Cybernetic Implants for Dummies to be released and we will be on our way!
Now we are going to see Accountants around the country getting Slashdotted. Although I am still waiting for the day when it shows up on m-w.com

"Articles: I Suspect M$ That Has Broken The GPL."
Besides the bad grammar, this was nothing more than an editorial to begin with. Stop getting in a tizzy over it and enjoy the day.
