It seems to me that over the last few years there has been a flood of people into the industry. Unfortunatly this has the same affect that it always does, you end up with people in a job because of the hype at the beginning. Myself, I am in it because I love what I do. How many of you have been to the doctor and got a nurse or a doctor that was in it strictly for the money? You can see the difference between the people who love it, and the people who bought into the hype.
If you find that you are not interested any longer, then by all means get out. The upshot to this for the rest of us is that the market will level back out and salaries will start to go back up, and then the hype starts all over again. It's a vicious cycle.
Another issue is due to the massive influx of less than enthusiastic people, the product suffers. We need more people like Linus, who do what they do for no other reason than the doing. All of the college grads who slide by are lowering the bar, and that does not benifit anyone.
The Dark Tower Series is a very good one. Unfortunatly, King has be stereotyped into the horror genre, when in reality most of his books are more on the line of Sci-Fi. I have read all of them, and enjoyed them. The one thing I would say is that if there is a series of books that you have read more than once, then it will be read 50 years from now. If it is good, it will be good.
Ok, I think it is time for all of the people who have enjoyed a free OS to wake up and realize that the only way Linux will ever compete in the market is if somone develops a viable business plan, which it appears Caldera is trying to do. Companies do not survive by giving their time away (as much as we all wish they would). I have no problem paying for a piece of software that
1) will do the job
2) Is backed by a company who has enough business sense that they might be there in a year
3) Is supported by said company.
Caldera bought SCO for one reason, the channel. Like it or not, SCO had a very good presence in the industry, and now Caldera has an opening into that market. I am sorry, but I cannot complain about a company who may potentially redude my costs by $1000 or better on a server, but only if they will be there 5 years from now. If they give the software away, they won't. At least this way, they might.
Also, if I heard Linus Torvalds correctly, his license does not restrict a company from selling Linux, it only requires that they make the source available. If Caldera will improve upon existing work, then let them. Let's face it, Linux in it's present form will never appeal to John Q Public. The end user wants a product that is all wrapped up with neat little buttons that they dont have to think about to use. Maybe this is the first step in that direction.
The one thing that everyone here is missing is this:
Like it or not, without MS and all of it's admittedly terrible products, a lot of the people who are here reading and posting (I am among them) would never have gotten here without it. They took a product that was the area of the elite, or geek, and made it a world wide product. Take a look at the sales numbers before and after Windows 95 and you will see what I mean. The record number of computer sales in the past years can only be attributed to the ease of use of the Windows products. I am not saying they are the best, or that I particularly like them, but they have done a lot more good than harm. How many of you out there that are working in the IT industry got your start on a WIN PC? The open source explosion is also a result of the low quality software that MS puts out.
The only problem that I have with Bill Gates is I want some of his money, but he has not seen fit to give me any.
You have raised and interesting point. "Now there's not much that comes out of the US anymore except propoganda and arrogance"
Lets examine the reasons for this:
1. The reason we got into space, and most of the other technological areas that we have excelled in was due to the individual. In other words, one person or small group of people dedicating their lives to finding the solution to a given problem. We do not see this any more.
The reason?
Well, this is just my view, and there are many others, but our culture is getting to the point where everyone expects it to be done for them. The government promises to solve all of our problems. This does not breed the type of person that is needed to make advances. Society as a whole tells us that it is not our fault that we cannot do this or that, that there is someone to blame for this, and it is NEVER yourself. As another comment here stated, sue if you do not like it, its the American way. Well it's not my way, and it is not the way to improve your life. It makes us lazy, and lazy people do not live very long. Take a look at the Romans. They got lazy, as have most of the earlier civilizations in the world, none of which are even close to their old glory.
Oh well, I needed to rant. There it is, tear it apart.
....come on. "logs on to the server and gains root access"!!! Who is in charge of securing these boxes? I know that it is not impossible to hack a root pwd, but give me a break, this is supposed to be one of the most secure OS's on the market. It would almost make you think there is a MAJOR security hole in the OS. My next question would be, if it is a smurf attack, why not filter the traffic? block udp, ping or whatever port he is coming in on. And then there is the obvious, if he has root access, what is the reason for the smurf attack, that seems a little redundant to me....
Hell, I dont know what the hell I am talking about...........
My thought is that you should teach the basics of how our computers work, ie bits, bytes, the electronics of the inner workings, and then let it go at that. If someone is going to develop a new OS, then I think they need to be free of any influence from the existing OS's. The reason for this is demostrated in Linux, which is very different from MS in some ways, but the GUI is patterned after Windows. Maybe what I would really like to see is a new type of system all together. It is time for something new. If I knew what, then it might be me that this question has been asked about, but its not.
When all else fails, ask a child. Their imagination will set you free.
And judging from your response, you must be one of the people who thought that Clinton should be out of office for his indescretions? NOT...If you are willing to give Clinton a pass on lying and hiding things from the public, then you better be ready to do the same for everyone else. I myself cannot do either, but I do not remember ever hearing GW deny or lie about anything that has come out today. If you can show me where he has lied, then do so, if not, make sure that you have your facts straight.
Here is a thought, do Linux boxes also fall over when airplanes fly over?
I would like to ask each of the candidates if they think it is right for a majority of the budget to be paid by smokers? I would also like to state for the rest of us here, if you smoke, vote, and let the people in Washington know that you smoke. This may sound like an add from a angry smoker, and your right, it is. But be that as it may, I do not feel that it is right for a form of behavior that some people feel is wrong to be taxed into non-existance.
I am in total agreement on not trying to learn SCO first. But let me take it one step further. Learn UNIX, doesn't matter which dist. you pick, pick one and learn it. I don't have any personal experience with Linux, but from what I have heard, it is a good starting point, as it is free and there is a wealth of knowledge here and other places on the web. I am running SCO myself,(Open Server Enterprise 505) and it is very jumbled. The thing is full of linked directories that make it hard to see what is going on. I have attended several of the training classes, but if I had to pay for them myself, I would never go. At an average of $2000 per course, I was disappointed in the depth of the training. Felt like I was at a Windows "everyone can do this" type course.
Thats my opinion..whats yours?
This may have been brought up before, if so, sorry, but I am wondering why no one has come out with a site that users (like us) can download any song they want, and the site's advertisers (god knows there are enough of them out there willing to waste money on porn sites and the like) pay the record companies so much per song downloaded. Even at a dime per song, they would make a killing. The technology is there, and we all know that we would put up with banners for free music. Seems to me this would solve both problems. If there is a VC out there reading this, remember where you heard it first.

I dunno, but if you are going to flaunt your superior intellect, I would suggest using the spell checker....
