The internet's global, no one seens the difference between a site hosted in Ca, US and one in London, Uk for example. Just move the site offshore, and no US legislation can touch you. ( Havenco, anyone?)

That's why governments are afraid of the net, because it transcends their power. No longer is individuals at the mercy of government.

And if they make all ISPs block sites? (ignoring how costly this would be). Cryptography comes to the rescue, use freenet or ssh tunnels into offshore computers. Once something's on the net, it'll always be there.

Ok, but would you classify yourself as a typical woman? The thing is, the grandparent to this never say it applies to all females, just most. Generalising saying all X are like Y is seldom right, but i think there might be a grain of truth in it.

As for Genes vs. Enviroment i think most researchers are hovering around 50%/50% each (again, on the average).

Still, i don't think society can account for everything that is today defined as typical female traits. I think that if you put a large no of newborn babies on an island, left and came back 20 years later that you'd find that, on average, women were less agressive and men were more. It's a pattern that repeats over all the world, even in separate cultures that have no connection. It's just too much to be a coincidence. But then again, i could be completly wrong. Happens all the time. :)

Tell me what you think.. it's an interesting discussion.

Swedes are very good at adopting new technology, and because the country only has ~9e6 citizens new tech can (and is) quickly adopted. Think of it as a lab where tech is "tested" before it spreads around the world.

Also, it's not a bad place to live. You don't have to be afraid to go out at night, it's roomy, lots of space and few people. As for cities in sweden, i'd go with the capital - Stockholm. Probably has the largest concentration of IT companies outside SV.

But then again.. this post isn't very much different from all others. Close your eyes and pick a country. :)
As long as you're open to new experiences and keep a friendly face it doesn't really matter where you are. There are IT jobs all around the world, not just in Silicon Valley.

There is nothing in socialism that states for it to be socialism, you have to have an oppresive government. Likewise, there's nothing in capitalism that says it needs to be implemented with democracy.

There are a couple of gotchas you need to watch out for when discussing politics.
Practice vs. Theory - Some systems sound great in theory, but doen't work in practice.
Speech vs. Reality - The difference between what the politicians say, and what they acctually do
Policial vs. Economic - This is something people often confuse. There's a big difference between enconomic models (like capitalism) and political (like faschism).

You can implement socialism under a democratic government, and have a pretty decent country - or you can implement it under a oppresive government and the people will be oppressed. That has nothing to do with socialism itself though. You could do the same thing with capitalism.

And as for Sweden not being fully socialistic, that's right. It's very rare that any country follows a docrin to the letter. The theories tend to be fairly extreme and unsuitable for a implementation without softening them. The US for example, isn't 100% capitalistic (though, it comes pretty close - but you also see a lot of the bad effects of capitalism in the US).

Let's try to define the basics of socialism in a short sentence: Socialism is a form of government where everybody puts a part of their wealth into a big pile, which then people (according to need) take stuff from.
Likewise for capitalism: Capitalism is a form of government where everybody works for themselves. Wealth is not distributed artificially.

Socialism tend to produce a flat society (almost no super rich, few rich, a large middle class, almost no poor). Capitalism on the other hand makes a more heirarcical society, where the rich are really rich, there's a decent sized middle class and quite a few really poor people.

I'm not sure what this has to do with RMS interview though *grin* :)

This is typical american superstition, not any better than the witch trials of history.

While socialism does have it's fair share of problems, the poster obviously never lived in a socialistic society and is basing her opinion on "common knowledge". It's the attitude of someone who doesn't know what the issue is, and isn't really interested in finding out.

There is always a large gap between political theory and practice, which you can see in any country. What was implemented in Russia during most of the 20th century is usually named Stalinism - a bit part of that political ideology is that the government knows everything the best and that the citizens shoud do what the government tells it to do (since the government knows it all). That is a far cry from the theory of socialism.

The basic morality as expressed in Christianity is really not unique, and forms of it has long predated the religion. It can be argued that such a contract (thou shalt not kill each other) is neccisary to establish a society in the first place.

Here's an advice: Broaden you mind, think outside the box that your culture has framed you in. Travel around the world, meet other cultures, be open! You'll find out that the way of your hometown may not have been the best, and that there are thousands of other ways of managing your life.

Fundamentalism is ugly in any religion, but christian fundamentalists are often the worst.

Besides, if Eve and Mallory are so much more powerful than Alice and Bob they've lost the game even before it started. The secret police can always install a Tempest device, break into your house and put video cameras and sound pickups all over your house. Likewise, if they control all the means of communication between me and Alice, the best i can hope for is that they won't be able to read my messages. The open source community is pure communism, and one of the few examples of a real world community acctually working. "From each one according to ability, to each one according to need". Since supply is infinite, this works in the software world. (if i download a copy of something, i don't take anything away from you). The cost of production is low, the supply is infinite and the cost of market entry is low.

Most americans are raised to think that communism is evil, and that it is in no way compatible with "freedom". I once heard someone say "Linux is CAPITALISTIC because you have the FREEDOM to do anything you want". And since when does capitalism (the desire to create profit) have anything to do with freedom (the ability to do what you want) ?

People confuse economic ideologies and political. For example.. Communism and capitalism are economic ideologies, democracy and fascism are political. There's a world of difference, and although democratic (or republic) forms of government are usually implemented with some form of capitalism, there's nothing preventing a country from having a democratic government implementing communist economic policies.

You need to see the difference between the economy and politics. Just because you use linux doesn't mean you want a socialist government :)

I'm not sure exactly what this has to do with Linux and K12 education though :)

Developers doing especially interesting things could get money from the fund to work on their project or hardware needed to write drivers could be bought.

A lot of projects needs money, and there are lots of companies and people that could give it. This would be a way for them to meet.
