Actually, debit cards fees are cheaper, much cheaper. Read this artice on MSNBC titled Visa, Mastercard seen foiling rivals. It's about Visa and MasterCard using thier monopoly powers to try to kill the debit card market (and the new antitrust suit against them).
Would 3840x2400 be enough?

I know, it's 10 grand, but check out the IBM T221.
In your examples, if the DATA was 'open', it would not matter that we had no access to the proprietary app's source code. You could simply write your own app, or use a competing app to process the data and compare the results.
Just thought it would be interesting to note that Apple is selling "site" licences for home users as what it calls the Mac OS X Family Pack.
Just thought it was neat. Bummed that there was no upgrade price, many users were only going to purchase one box of Mac OS X 10.2 and load it on all thier home machines. Now you can legally upgrade all your home machines, for a much more resonable amount, and Apple gets $199 instead of $129

Any info out there on converting laptop LCD into something with a VGA or DVI plug? I got some old rather worthless or broken laptops with nice displays that just seem like such a waste.
Unfortunatly "software libre" translates to "free software" in english. This causes the english reader to conciously have to decide the definition of free in each context in which it it used. Is it free (as in beer) ? or is it free (as in free speech) ?
It must be so much easier to make the 'free' software argument, in languages in which there are two separate and distinct words for the two distint concepts encapsulated in the english language word 'free'.
Dr. Bott has the $199.00 MoniSwitch DVI. It's a 'manual' switch box, just like the Gefen one, but you can connect up to 4 computers.
I have no personal experience with either boxes, but this one seems like a better value.
I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but they never said they needed transparent aluminium, they just offered it's formula in exchange for the glass panels.
Try getting hold of an old laptop. I got a 486 toshiba satelite for about $20, added two cheap PCMCIA ethernet cards, and loaded linux on it.
No fans (I think), battery backup, and LCD screen, nice...
There is a Linux on Laptops FAQ somewhere out there where you can check for compatability. Ebay is a good place to check for cheapo laptops. Just whatch out the the amount of RAM available. With no CD-ROM most of the old cheapo laptops can be a pain to get linux loaded, if your working from a distro whose imstall img can be over 8MB in size.
If there are new "Audio-CD" formats, wouldn't it make sense that these new formats include the meta-information currently provided by Gracenote, freedb, etc..
Actually, don't some existing CD's contain title/track information already?
Why would there even be a need for gracenote/freedb in the future (besides for helping id 'legacy' CDs)?
I think part of the problem is that you've 'agreed' to this by accepting/signing the license agreement. In addition to demanding proof as often as they like, I believe Microsoft can walk in somewhere and say 'No Windows for you!' and thanks to the usual '... Microsoft can revoke this license at any time...' type stuff in most license agreements, your organization/company is screwed.
As for the Java threads, unfortunatly Linux seems to spawn a 'process' for every thread. It's a pretty stupid complaint to make regarding Java. Unfortunatly using these 'light' processes under Linux, is the only way to scale your apps under linux in an MP system efficciently. Maybe someone out there with better Linux kernel knowlege can explain....
As for the database support, any database should work. The limiting factor is mainly the quality of the JDBC drivers. So in reality, since many JDBC drivers are not 100% compliant (miss a feature or two here or there), Websphere is very sensitive to the JDBC driver version. I've set this up with InstantDB (just for the config info), DB2, and Oracle. I'm sure by now, many more JDBC drivers must be up to par. Also note that the JDBC 2.0 specification added many new features which websphere takes advantage of.
The scary thing is that I'm sure they wont stop till, everyone, regardless what they broadcast, is required to pay for a 'license'. I would be money on this.
FYI: The Open Runtime Platform from intel seems to be an open sourced VM, which happens to also be a JVM. Actually it seems similar to Microsoft's.net runtime... I'm not sure what languages it currently supports besides Java...
It seems that MP3Board is saying, if you can sue me, you can sue AOL for the same (similar) reasons. If AOL fights, wins, and sets a precedent, then it might be available as a defense for MP3Board vs. RIAA.
Colors help easily identify the model being used. For example, "Beige G3/300 tower", and you know this machine is 3 years old, have ATI rage II video, no Firewire, etc...

Would surely be nice to have something like AppleScript for Linux (or other UNIXes besides Mac OS X)....

Stock market should be closed. My family members who work in/around wall street claim the Wall Street area have been evacuated.
Is this the true 'viral' infection (as opposed to the GPL)?
