basically, what i'm saying: if freenet gets huge, will the "little guy" still be able to even publish a website on it? i mean, right now it seems difficult enough to get connections to the point where your webpage will be constantly accessible -- will this be an HTML Napster where all we can find is britney spears and her ilk?

precisely -- just because you CAN take cookies from the cookie jar doesn't mean it's a good thing. Napster has not shown itself to be able to renumerate artists properly -- giving artists even LESS than the recording industry. As for giving exposure, that's bullshit -- the primary means of finding music on napster is title/artist SEARCH, meaning that you have to know what you're looking for already -- where do you get this knowledge? well, from the looks of it, top 40 radio and MTV. i don't know where they came up with the argument that they existed to promote obscure bands, etc -- it's not a PROMOTING service, it's a LOCATING service.

there's no Pro-Napster speakers that will talk about Napster because they all either: A) believe that INFORMATION WANTS TO BE FREE AND ALL IP SHOULD BE FREE, or B) are teenagers getting the latest SNOOP DOGG or whoever the hell is flavor or the week.

remember that freeness is basically a non-issue for many many many people -- i know folks who wouldn't even speed or run a stop sign, but are more than willing to use copies of commerical software. essentially, windows and its software *are* free for most users. you guys really need to revise your stance to : "shut down the fucking pirates, etc, use linux!" because let's face it: for most poeple, the only merit of linux is that it is (legally) free -- but fuck, if all this other software can also be had for nought, AND its easier for the end user to understand (and is a game, audio or graphical utility that just will never show up on linux)-- well, fuck it.

however, it's good to see your (apparent) ignorance has not hindered what is generally a reasonable conclusion: more audio/video/pc "convergence" (i cringe at using such an internet buzzword -- i am not a consultant.) Will it get to the gee-whiz jetson level you propose? i think only after we have an interface revolution. you have a PC at home, but do you watch movies on it? no, because MONITOR MOVIE == SUCK (because of their nice fat beige border that reminds you that you're suppose to be working.) instead, you have an OUTPUT to your tv, wireless keyboard, and all manner of geeky jerry-rig setup that "regular folk" would not bother with. will we see more of this sort of thing? sure, as soon as we change the interface -- dramatically. do i have any constructive thoughts about how to do this? no. i'm just here to bitch people out.

right. well, i think art is mashed potatoes, motherfucker.

art and programming don't have to be mutually exclusive, because the former is undefinable. Not to mention that you use the subjective terms "beauty" and "message" to define it. (what the hell is beautiful?) Basically, you've stated : Art is about conveying [indeterminable things] and/or [inspecific communications] to an audience (sometimes just the artist myself). This does not strike me as enough evidence to definitively exclude programming as art. (although the front page blurb seems to equate an "elegant solution/production/code/etc." with "art" -- something i'm not prepared to do either.)

saying programming is NOT art is just as ridiculous as saying programming IS art. it can't be proved or disproved in a general case (or probably even a specific one), and we can argue about it for fucking forever. better to spend that time making something that makes you happy.
