Offsite shooting is much better since the trouble of cleaning it up can be left to others. Onsite shootings are disruptive to the office and can litter equipment, clothes and furniture with exit wound debris. If you can't decide which method would be optimal to your manslaughter needs, you can just shoot them whenever and wherever you see them first.
"There are some things that just do not fit into the picture"
Ironic. Actually, you're probably looking at a message that would have an image overlaying the garbled text. I see those all the time at work with MS Outlook. Mine will appear just like yours, but the other folks that don't have our spam/binary filter set very well get a binary attachment that appears as an image over the text. I've never seen much HTML in them, if at all. Outlook seems to render an image if it finds it, regardless of if it's told to.
The troll probably has installed MySQL under Win32 on a badly fragmented NTFS partition. I can attest first hand that it will kill performance for MySQL. NTFS performance degrades badly when highly fragmented, I don't care how good the drive hardware is. Kepp a good defrag too handy if you are running under Win32 and have files that grow.
As someone whos only been wearing glasses for only a year or so (and I'm over 30), I can say that the disguise can work - but not if the person you are trying to deceive sees you every day. I've had people standing right next to me that don't recognize me because they knew me before the glasses and they knew me pretty well before. No kidding. I was kind of amazed when I realized that it worked.
A psychologist friend explained to me that people zero in on a particular feature of the face to remember what you look like. With most people, it's the eyes and/or the nose. When you have glasses, it's the glasses and/or the nose and the eyes are pretty much ignored. Since that major feature is no longer in common with their previous mental image of you, their brains classify it as a "new" person until corrected by the observer gathering more information or being told.
If you don't believe me, get some stage glasses (no prescription) and go see some folks you haven't seen in a while at a bar or somewhere else that's crowded and public. Now see how long it takes for one of those friends to recognize you.
which was stranded on Earth after an accident after a battle against the Korg.
They're fighting a keyboard company?!?! I was always suspicious of that old DSS-1 sampler I used to have... Damn thing recorded everything I said I bet!
Thanks for the info! I'm not religious in the institutional sense, but I have a lot of respect for real spirituality. I found that quote on this page, which was from a post here on/. that I can't seem to find anymore.
Hungh? All I saw was an atricle about a DoS and some graphs. Where did you see the ass from hell? It must just be burnt into your retinas now. You should get that checked out by an optomitrist. It must suck going through life seeing that everyshere. "Oh my god! My dog is a giant stretched asshole - and my postman - and my best friend - and my monitor - and my hands!" I'm suprised you haven't gone insane yet... or maybe you have...
Hey Mods, the link in the grandparent is real information and actualy is "informative". Don't listen to this coward.
I agree and happen to think the problem is bigger. Time to coin a new phrase: "Citizen Apathy" (Hopefuly the latent guilt in that might fire someone up enough to change their ways. The people I've used it on were shocked and offended:) ). The average citizen doesn't care to know how the government works in the US. They have an idea that they are being screwed, but don't want to be bothered with trying to learn about it much less try to fix it. Sadly, it's not fast/shiny/loud/sexy enough to matter to them. Mindless bitching doesn't take much work and generally will get a group of people to agree with them just so everyone can avoid discussing politics. Actually saying something constructive takes balls and panache. My Dad used to say that the people who originally thought that discussing politics and religion were uncouth dinner topics must have been cleregy and senators. I tend to believe it more and more as I get older... ah, what a cynical optimist he was.
I think that candidate would HAVE to depend on the web to get the grassroots thing going. Do what Dean has done...BUT not be associated with the two main parties that are increasingly, no choice at all.
The Green Party did this in 2000, but all it got them was blame. I admit that I voted for Nader - even though I didn't expect him to win. I voted for him so that the Greens could try to get the required 15% of the vote to qualify for federal matching funds in their next presidential campaign. Go ahead and say that I lost it for Gore. You know what? He's just as inept as Bush only with different priorities. We need new blood and my vote went to support that. As it turns out, the Greens didn't get the 15% that they needed and Nader is too old/retired/worn-down to run again. Thus, they're back at square one, but I feel better knowing that I tried to help buck the status quo some.
I sure hope it doesn't mean the death of the two party system.
Actually, it's never really been a two party system - that's just what the majority parties would like folks to think. The Liberatarians have been around for a while now. Same with the Green Party. Republicans and Democrats were once fringe parties that took over the Federalists and Whig parties (in fact they were once one party: the Democratic-Republican party).
If you would have told Ben Franklin, George Washington, Tomas Jefferson et. al. that they were creating a two party system, they would correct you. Washington even warned against creating "factions" in his farewell address from his presidency. Our political system wasn't designed for it. It just happened. Go check out some history.
Most folks misunderstand the term "majority rule" to mean greater than 50% of the vote. However, it's meant to be the cantidate with the greater percentage of voters, not an absolute percentage or greater.
I'm not trying to troll here. I'm just frustrated and I wish more Americans would learn how their own political system works.
"Jet SQL has certain limitations compared to the other versions of SQL. In general, Jet SQL is not designed to manage a database, but rather, it is used to retrieve information from a database. To cite two limitations, Jet SQL, by itself, cannot create a database and cannot manage security . This is where the Microsoft Data Access Object, commonly called DAO, enters the scene. DAO contains libraries which are designed to manage databases. While, yes, you can use Jet SQL without DAO, you are effectively limiting your options to handle the data. For example, with DAO you can create a database and manage security. Likewise, Microsoft's Access offers the ability to create and maintain databases."
I don't know if by SQL you mean PosgreSQL, MySQL or SQL server, but I did find some data.
Database Journal has an article comparing SQL Server 2000 and Access 2000, but the feature list shouldn't have changed much. The charts that you are interested in are at the bottom right before the conclusion.
Here's a speed comparison between MySQL and Access.
Here's a great comparison of many SQL technologies including Access.
You do realize that you can install MySQL on a server and use Access as the front end via ODBC, don't you. If you do that, you can teach both and show the reasons why a particular solution would fit particular needs in addition to teaching the bare DB concepts. To me, this is the most open ended solution without having to create problems with people at work.
From a strictly defined perspective, you are right. However, the term is used to describe the surrounding phenomina as well. Like most biological activities, there are psychological and physiological effects that manifest in most species when actual sperm competition occurs and when there is a threat of sperm competition. It wasn't easy in the time I had to find a great article on the subject, but I wanted to put something that would get the research ball rolling for people. This may clarify a little more:
"Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of two or more males simultaneously
occupy the reproductive tract of a female and compete to fertilize an egg. We
used a questionnaire to investigate psychological responses to the risk of
sperm competition for 194 men in committed, sexual relationships in the United
States and in Germany. As predicted, a man who spends a greater (relative to a
man who spends a lesser) proportion of time apart from his partner since the
couple's last copulation reported (a) that his partner is more attractive, (b)
that other men find his partner more attractive, (c) greater interest in
copulating with his partner, and (d) that his partner is more sexually
interested in him.
For more detail on the biological effects, see this:
Shackelford noted that prior research has demonstrated that sperm counts are higher in ejaculate the longer a man is apart from his female partner - with sperm count leaping from 350 million when the man has been with the woman 100% of the time to 800 million when he has only seen her 5% of the time.
Please also remember that this is a new area of research for humans, so you'll see a lot of the same research repeated in relation to human males.
Indeed. It looks like there's real competition to the Goat-Ass now. This is one challenge that I hope to never spectate again, but this is slashdot where our motto is: "if we can't put our heads in our own asses, we'll trick you into looking at some nasty pictures of other asses". To the parent post: Google is not evil. You sir, are evil and that woman is not at all healthy. *shiver*
I thought about that too. It's reflective of Microsoft's attitude torward exploits: If no one releases a flaw publicly, then no one will exploit the flaw before the patch is out, right? Unfortunately for MS, we live in the real world and flaws will be exploited regardless of whether or not it's on Microsoft's schedule. I imagine that the scheduled update method will eventually bite them in the ass, but by then they would have already made a big show of "improving" security and the patch/update process - just like they are doing with the December No Patch announcement. Thus the egg on their faces will only be from us geeks in-the-know and not from the short term memories of the media and press. It's not just what and how to spin, but when you spin that matters in today's media.
My favorite is when guy catches his girl cheating on him with another guy...and then goes after (or at least gets mad at) the guy, with whom he had no "emotional contract", shall we say.
I don't know if scientists have a name for this most delicious of male irrationalities, but I like to call it the Jerry Springer Phenomenon
It's called Sperm Competition and is a very real biological process in men of all species.
I'm going to do some blatant karma whoring here so my status will fsdfjdfflll.... Wow! Lookit you! What's your name cutie? What am I reading? Slashsomething - it doesn't matter. You have gorgeous eyes.
It wasn't that it was too loud at night really, just that he was playing it at every waking moment. I'm even a night owl and kinda loud myself (who doesn't turn good music up?). I even did the Zappa-esque 36/12 sleep schedule for a couple of years (up for 36 hours then sleep 12 on a rotating schedule). And yes, the cops come to my parties too.
My particular solution came after he had just spent the past four days staying home from work and playing games nearly 24 hours a day (He was proud to have played for 50 hours straight without having to stop for sleep). He even mentioned quiting his job and selling Pot for money so he could play full-time. Clearly, something had to be done.
By the way, I also play guitar, so I can attest that loud can be good - just not the same damn 8 bit music for days on end being distorted by a crappy TV speaker turned all the way up. There are only so many times you can stand hearing the "bla-ding" of a Mario coin at full volume per day. You try to live with that and then see how much of a pussy you are. Fscking trolls.
"These software enhancements will be implemented in all touch screen units deployed within Ohio and the process-related questions are addressed in the Diebold Election Systems training manuals," Radke said.
Why is everyone assuming that software is the only problem. It would seem to me that physical security is just as important. Blackwell points it out, but even most/.ers ignore it. The machines need locking cases. All media needs to be locked up tight. Transportation of these devices is, at least to me, the second weakest link in the security chain (Wireless networking is the top and is to me another physical security issue). During transportation, there is little supervision and scheduled arrival times can be fudged.
Just imagine, a laptop with drive image and a power source for the target box are all you would really need. Take a snap of the drive and then see how you could manipulate the software via the wireless connection or even figure out how to fake your own connection. Sure it won't work for the current election, but the next one...
The problem is: physical security takes money and genuine work by the vendor. Software, as we all know, can be made to "seem" to work rather easily.
I came up with a solution a long time ago for my ex-roommate who played his NES way too loud constantly. While he was at work, I opened up his TV and disconnected the speaker. When he turned it on, he started smacking the TV and cursing at the "stupid peice of ____". I then asked him what was wrong and said that we should try the NES on my TV. Sure enough, it mad noise. I then "diagnosed" that he had blown the speaker and op amps in his TV by using the NES too loud. The classic line was telling him that the FM synth sounds that the NES made were perfect for blowing out a speaker and spouted some realistic sounding theories. He never did figure it out, but also never did turn it up loud again. Every so often, I would catch him trying to "warn" some of his friends about doing the same - "Dude! That's how I messed up my TV". Heh. If you're reading this, sorry Mike. It was me:)
Exactly what I was thinking. My bet is that, once their software becomes popular, they will start charging for it a la DIVX and other "rope 'em in while it's free" business models. They are in the "initial hype" portion of the business model - posting on/., magazine and trade publication articles, selling shirts... making it look cool. Next is the "widen user base" portion where you start seeing the app bundled with everything under the sun from magazines to new machines. Finally, they will come to the "cash in" portion where they either make it spy/adware or just notify everyone that on such-and-such date, the product will no longer work without a one-time/monthly/annual fee.
The software actually looks kinda cool, but I'll be damned if another person/company/weasel takes me in and switches to a fee based product midstream. It's sad that I've seen enough of this happen to smell it coming now.
