..that only people outside the US are gonna be hackers? i was raised in central america, and i didnt hear about smokey or mcGruff or whatever they're called 'til i came here, and they seemed like a joke to me.
considering that any kid from 6th grade up starts making up his/her own mind on what they're gonna do with their time, the idea of "brainwashing" seems a bit extravagant.. sure, you'll have the usual goodie-2-shoes being nice and polite and following a big dog's advice about crime and a teddy bear's advice about fire, but most others already went beyond what their parents and teachers tell them. hell, how many of us belong to that 98% of high schoolers who know the basic way to get through school: nod and pretend your listening to the teacher while you draw on a notebook or stare off into the wall... SOME kids will be influenced, but they would've been influenced to one thing or another anyway.. the true creative ones will always find amusement in the futile attempts by their elders to control them.
some of you, specifically the "this will blow over" types should really think about a few things.. being neither a philosopher nor a high-grade programmer, let me put it like this.. Ever heard of the expression "the straw that broke the camel's back"? it doesn't necessarily always mean the last possible thing before someone snaps.. it means also, the slow, steady stream of "little things" that keep being added to the mix, i.e., the labels on music.. on tv.. on movies.. on videogames.. on this, that, and the other thing.. a steady stream of "small" changes that will eventually become so overwhelming that you'll hear yourselves screaming "geee, i never saw that one coming" when in fact, and *because* you chose to never see it coming, since "they're only small changes after all" it is your lack of action that made these things possible...and the final straw, the one that breaks the camel's back, is the one that you add, when you say, "well it isnt *my* fault, what can one person do?" c'mon people.. let's get out of our shells for once and do *something* to stop this
umm. yes i'm sure snuff films are available at the local blockbuster.. oh wait, blockbuster doesnt carry the faces/traces of death series... and Nazi propaganda never converted anyone? can you honestly believe that people would read "the jews are the cause of all evil" and believe it? well.. some ignorant idiots maybe.. as far as I know, or read, most people chose to follow or allow nazi'ism for the same reason a group of people will do nothing when they see someone being raped/beat up/injured.. it's group behavior, and the lack of decision making that happens when people are put into situations that they rather avoid.. read some sociology books sometime.. the point i was trying to make was not for anarchy, but for choice.. if you take away a person's ability or willingness to choose and think for themselves, you're left with either a bunch of zombies, or a bunch of very dissatisfied people who will end up rebelling and creating a civil war, a state much worse than anarchy.. maybe that is what we need, given that the alternatives arent looking too good right now.. take it as you will, but like any other situation in life, there are extremes which must be allowed for.. is it better to have a free state, with no government/activist group telling you what you should/shouldn't do, and have the occassional extremists that go out of their way to shock others, or would you rather be in the middle, safe from even your own shadow? sometimes pushing the extreme, and accepting it is better than blindly accepting what the government tells you.. isnt that what the germans did in nazi days? close their eyes an ears and accept what the propaganda told them?
does this constitute as something "even adults shouldn't see"? Sometimes i wonder about people, and their twisted sense of humor, etc.. but when someone else comes along and says that is something "even [fill in your suitable replacement for "nice"] people shouldn't see" you're pretty much sending one message.. "it offends my tastes, so we should ban it." Now, I do agree that some things a kid might read on some obscure webpage (try reading some of those extreme religious/anti-religious sites, especially their humor sections) can affect the way they think about things... hell, a bird taking a nose dive and splatting crap on their face can affect the way they think.. but i really dont think that seeing a naked woman, reading about different philosophies, d/l'ing dirty jokes and/or playing gory games is gonna turn all kids into perverts, psychos, S&M torturers, or fundamentalists... that's something that, for the lack of a simpler model, involves parents, school, friends, environment, and so on, and so forth.. not to say that computers *wont* affect it.. they just wont play that big of a role.. think of how many of us have seen/read stories and pictures that "even adults shouldn't see".. did we turn out to be perverted homicidal maniacs? did we all of a sudden give up being who we were and became all fiendish like some people like to believe? i highly doubt that kids are so idiotic not to realize by themselves, and for themselves, what is and isnt an acceptable, and how far they can get away with breaking the rules just a bit.. Do we really want to make our kids into zombie-like yesmen/women, or do we want them to be able to think, and more importantly *choose* for themselves what to make of their lives? just a thought or two at 2.30am cheers
Is that the new thing? i saw maybe five minutes of one of the episodes the other day and it was boring as hell.. now i just watch The Sopranos on hbo during that time-slot.. oh well, i got bab5 season 1-5 on video.
a world where your choices are MS windows (in whatever version), AOL-OS (you know it's next), or any flavor of *nix.. all using different standards, all running on different hardware..
maybe it's time to drive OSS standards and APIs and drive out the megacorps..
then again, maybe i've been watching too much anime/sci-fi stuff:)
I'm starting to feel the rush.. we'll have 3.0 by the end of the month at this rate.. on a side note, ever since 2.2.8 came out, my dhcp died and cable modem died..bleh prolly something i did though laters
The one thing that got me was, after they set up my account, and set up the modem (after I asked them if they would skip the installation price if I did it myself), I started up my linux box, and started surfing around (wmnet is great for watching those transfer rates:).. anyways, i called technical support for mediaone-chicago, since, again, they neglected to give me the password for my email, and for the hell of it, asked "So how do I set up Linux to use the cable modem?" (it was already running) the reply, "Linux? that's the new operating system isnt it?" "umm.. sure.. how do i set it up?" "well, I dont think it's possible, we haven't heard anything about doing that"
was not the acting (even though it did seem a bit mtv'ish...) not the plotline (standard sci-fi "we are humans ergo we kick everyone's ass!!") not even the inspirational music (ala independence day)
it was these stupid teeny-boppers sitting in the theater oohing and ahhing every time freddy prince jr. was on the screen.. and throwing sh*t all over the place (one bit of sneakers or something hit me on the head, and left me with a headache through most of the movie); oh and lets not forget the constant talking and giggleing and other sort of teeny-bopper behaviour 10-14 year olds like to engage in.. the movie could've been better, but it was worth the eight bucks (the trailer being the best part of course).. maybe on a second viewing (when it comes to cable) i'll enjoy it more.. cheers
