2) University of Wisconsin, Madison 3) Indiana University (was number one last year) 4) University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
The Big Ten properly represented...:)
Though two of those are surrounded by farm fields on all sides, how the hell they got above Ann Arbor is beyond me.
Correct. U of Colorado is the top party school.
I'd have to agree, coming from the city that holds the 'Hash Bash' every year, I was shocked at how much more available the stuff was in Boulder. Unfortunately, now I have to stumble back to Ann Arbor for classes.
Michigan is usually in the top 5 for both CE and EE. But I'm not gonna pay for the premium so I don't know if they are this year.
One of the things I love most about U of M is that they'll let any student in Engineering take any class for any department without looking at the Prereqs. One extra year and I could add Film and Math degrees practically without even applying to those departments.
Personally, I look forward to our new Apple Overloards...
In other news, Department of Homeland Security (DoH'S)! is reporting that the Taliban have already begun smuggling G5's into Afganistan for use against colition forces.
Tell his mother that the only reason he has an Internet connection going to his room in the basement is so he can gamble and look at porn all day and night.
The threat alone should get the average '35-year old still livin in his parent's basement' to quickly sell his comic and Collectible card collection to recoup the loss.:)
1. Users don't run Unix as root. Viruses have a very hard time attacking programs they have no write permissions on.
Assumed knowledge, you are assuming that Every user of Unix knows about user permissions and ever user of Windows does not.
2. Unix has a much longer history than Windows NT+. It's had more time for the holes and buffer problems and other stuff to be fixed. Linux essentially "lengthens" its short history because it has so many eyes looking at it.
Actually, history can work against Unix. Imagine having to repeatedly patch over time for new machines. It's the patches that cause problems. Plus, the technology used in Windows NT has been around for about 15 years. It's not exactly 'new'
3. The killer Unix programs (Apache, SSH, PostgreSQL, etc.) don't run as root either. So even if they get exploited, worms can't do much with their rights anyway.
They run on Windows too.:)
In Windows they are called Services and can have specific permissions assigned to them.
Unix is just built better.
Really? Which one? When you decide that realize there are at least ten others, and some aren't going to be built too well.:)
Now quit the 'Holier than Thou' rants. Unix's GUI sucks (any of them, Aqua doens't count as being for Unix, yet). Give Unix a GUI that can pass the Grandmother test, then come back to me on how 'high and mighty' Unix is.
Dilenma, og get a beer now while they are cold but possibly warming up the other beers by opening the fridge, or don't open the fridge and hope they stay cold.
Just the kind of stuff that drives guys insane man.....
You're talking about a time when 3DFx had better market share and ATI was barely ever in consideration. Your complaining of ATI on Win 98 would be like complaining about all PCs because you were running a Cyrix chip.
3 Years ago. A lot can happen in three years (ask what's left of 3DFx.) Ten seconds of listening to a 'dustbuster' made me realize ATI is now #1 in the market.
Also, you start by mentioning you own three ATI cards, but the only one you whine about is the TV card. If you are goign to say something as an argument then back it up.
Finally, if the TV card was _so_ important, why not just get an All-In-Wonder? Those have done well for years. They _STILL_ sell the Rage128 All-In-Wonder because it does so well on Video.
Now I'll go back to my Radeon 8500, which I got at a bargain well over a year ago and still does well.
Or maybe, JUST FUCKING MAYBE , Linux isn't some sort of magical bug free OS where every buffer is checked, every race condition averted, and every service that runs on it is guaranteed bug free.
All over the World, hundreds of Script Kiddies just had thier illusions of gradeur shattered...
They then go back to their own Red Hat boxes only to find that some guy from Argentina has been using their boxes to send spam for months now.
Just a suggestion, to really appreciate Linux and how it works, start with OpenBSD and go from there...
People who use creatine have problems with losing hair, enlarged foreheads and impotence.
Ummm... My guess is that you don't know what Creatine is and you let some guys bs you. Creatine has nothing to do with Steroids, it's completely natural, and is a chemical that is found in your muscles right now. Taking Creatine has been shown to improve endurance, but not much more, unless this study shows some substance.

... that 9 months from December, we'll see a sharp decline in the number of babies born.
:)
Bad Assumption: Those watching ever figured otu how to reproduce.
Either way, Darwinism at work.

So who got fired?
:)
The SCO rep.
No reason, they just didn't like him.
-B
Dude, don't diss SuSE by relating it to SCO. That's just plain wrong!
-B
SCO actually has to say something funny in order to get a story posted on /.
Maybe SCO doesn't really exist and this is all a plot by Linus and the Slashdot Editor to get more attention to Linux.
Hear my word, in two weeks UA Linux will announce a new, 'clean', (SCO Free) version of Linux.
or I could be talking out of my a$$.
-B
I for one welcome SCO's new IBM overlords ... in fact, I like 'em so much I wish for a GRID of them!
Wow, imagine a beowulf cluster of those press clippings!!!
-B
Whoh! 24 hours without an SCO story!
I wasn't sure if I would make it!

...oh, right. :-\
If not, would you support strategic military action against Utah?
Damn you Taco!! It was a joke!!!
Oh well, good thing Michigan didn't have out of those blackouts like California
It's Class Action Countersuit Time!!!
-B
Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM ...until micro-channel came out. :)
The last 1% actually like Windows, but they also happen to be the 1% of the population that exhibits a distinct interest in sadomasochism.
Hey! I'm sado-masochist and I highly resent that remark! I use BeOS!
-B
While there are certainly exceptions to the norm, you TEND to get what you pay for.
Yeah I can already notice the difference in quality with my $699 SCO-enchanced Linux kernel.
(ducks)

Still waiting for IBM's Model to come out. Not much yet.

Rumors were they wanted to get all the kinks out of Mac OSX before shipping. The OS runs very well on dual-processor from what I've heard.

If enough people don't like an support an OS/Distro, it will die.

I just wish more OS people had taken a class in Software Engineering.

I'll be happy to, just as soon as Linux is worth writing a virus for...
