Consider when Diebold CEO, Walden O'Dell wrote in a fund raising letter that he was committed "to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the President." I don't bloody understand how much more the company's image could be tarnished.

So it's time for Microsoft to prop up their revenue stream. This is no surprise. Several flavours, which means you can decide how much tax you want to pay, based upon your needs. The curve, however continues to flatten and you'll find there are still a lot of Win 95, Win 98, Win ME, Win 2000 and Win XP users who won't budge until they have to. (We just retired a Win 95 machine at work) Microsoft will continue to pull support for many of these legacy users, but many are beyond caring.

I suppose the timing of Vista has something to do with a Superbowl media blitz, more than the code being ready. Though I'll likely switch to a Mac before I go to Vista, It would be interesting to look it over and see if security is any closer to that we enjoyed on Mainframes 20 years ago. Probably only a little bit more. Geez, it's like these people never seem to get it and Windows continues to be the technology equivelent of the Tar Baby. Meanwhile, they've got billions in reserve, which at least some of should have gone into better development.

Well, wind is only one factor. Moisture density (clouds) could come into play as well. You're talking 200 miles, where only a very slight variation on forces acting on a small mass, (3.2Kg) could be enough to miss by a city block. At least the Tomahawk has guidance systems. Is there more to NASA's side of the story or is this a further sign of their incompetence? The article paints a picture where anyone would be an idiot to skip research into this type of engine and then says NASA was doing so because of "risk". I doubt that's the whole side of the story but if even a smidgin of it's true that's yet another major flaw exhibited by NASA. Why are we trying to save the shuttle again?

Maybe NASA subscribes to the theory "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", as in what they have works and has worked for some time. Changing formula may require complete change in vehicle design. Not something to take lightly.

I didn' think so, back when they rolled out the Motorola RAZR, with it's sky-high initial asking price. Now I go to the pub and there's about 5 people there with them. The RAZR is becoming ubiquitous and there are no shortage or people with gripes about them.

I think the worries on the iPhone will prove about as damning as those of the RAZR. Some people carry around their own Reality Distortion Fields, so I take the doubters with a granule of NaCl.

A few years ago I was working at a job where we were doing everything in a 4th Generation Language. We got outsourced (thanks to a CIO who just popped in for a couple years to pad his resumee) to a company which had an integrated product written entirely in COBOL. (Of course they ran their code on an HP platform, which by now has been retired and HP support will soon, also end. COBOL survives because people still develop and keep old business apps written in it. Some work, by code, never changes.

The other major advantage of COBOL is it's library for handling business computation and I/O. That stuff exists in other languanges, but as an example with Microsoft's Visual Studio, it's all done differently (and somewhat stupidly re-defining formatting for the nth time.)
